Based on a concept by Jack Blanchard of the Vintage Vending Machine facebook group just completed a conversion of a US stamp machine to dispense Hershey miniature candy.
The conversion included:
-larger dispensing windows & install of dispensing doors;
-modifying the dispense slides to handle thicker candy than stamp booklets.
Touched up the face which was badly chipped particularly along the sides, serviced the mechanism & added Hershey labels in the stamp windows. The machine works a 'treat'.

Thanks for the heads up warning Mr Bally but no sun, no ants so no problem. You warning has however alerted that the wooden base was not termite proofed - now done.

Does this Qualify??? A solar powered TOMMY calculator

Reported to be a promotional Item for the tourof The Who's Tommy, original cast (1992 Broadway Revival)
The story behind it is that about 100 were made for Data East employees to be given out in 1994 or 1995.

That's crazy cool!

#1257 5 years ago

That is cool, even though it's not an EM.

#1258 5 years ago
Quoted from BallyCrazy:

This is my Bally Bowler. That’s a contact bowler. The ball actually makes contact with the pins. No switch actuator on alley. Very fun to play…

So I'll ask, how does the machine detect that the pins are hit? Are there magnets in the pins and invisible hall effect sensors in the pin deck? Something attached to the strings?

Got any pictures or this mechanism? I would be very interested in seeing how this works.

#1259 5 years ago
Quoted from orangestorm87:

how does the machine detect that the pins are hit?

I have one of these bowlers but haven't yet gone through it. The pins articulate. So I believe when the pins
reset so they're straight up and down, they lock in position. Once hit and out of the vertical position, they
mechanically unlock then flip a switch to the Bank Relay. Not restoring it yet, I may be a little off, but that's
basically how it works. We'll see what B.C. has to say..

#1260 5 years ago

There are good pictures of the mechanism that shows the switches in the pivot point/articulating mechanism for each pin in the pinrepair.com site. Go to the bowler section/Bally '60s bowlers for details.

#1261 5 years ago

The first picture shows how when the pin is hit, it can rotate to several positions. The second picture shows that on the side of the unit is a small board that a switch is on and moves with the mech telling the machine what is going on. Also, here is a video of mine.

Just completed partial resto on a Coen 1950s U Select It vendor. Quite a unique mechanism particularly the coin mech and a quite heavy machine-around 55kgs.
To operate make your selection, wind selection down to dispensing window, insert coin and depress lever. The dispensing door is forced open and the product dispensed. If there is no product in the dispensing window the coin is returned to the dispensing opening.
Fabricated a mobile base & now loaded with candy, pez dispensers & hot wheels-very popular with my grandsons.

Recently picked up this 1962 United "Embassy" shuffle alley. It's a full on clean everything mechanical & electrical before use project. Something I don't normally get into is the cosmetics. But I hated the way the button panel looked (water damaged). A little time with the sander & some polyurethane and zing! I couldn't stop myself

Thats a great pick-up and really nice work cad-kid. I am fascinated that the external decor is very similar to my United Tropics 16ft ball bowler of which I am in the process of undertaking a cosmetic resto.

Just this morning I removed staples from the back door and wondered what had been attached. Your post shows indeed x2 sheets and from what I can read seem almost relevant to my machine. Would it be possible for you to post a specific pic of each sheet pls? Thks Wayne

#1268 5 years ago

Wow, I'm glad you saw my post and chimed in wayner

The features and art packages appear to be the same - (In my opinion they are the best). While the green in other models is ok, I'm not a fan of the salmon color. I'm not sure but ours might be the top of the model lineup. In looking at the flyers for all the different models in 1962 they really played with many things to make different variations - 3 vs 4 reel scoring, different bonus score displays, 5 or 7 ways to play, fluorescent vs normal lighting, different side rails. And I see your's doesn't have a reel to indicate how many bowlers are in the game (it has indicator lamps).

Here are the larger pics you wanted of the sheets from the back door. One will be useful and the other one not so much (shuffle specific).

Keep us posted on your project. I'm not painting mine, just refinishing the varnished wood.

#1269 5 years ago

Thks so much cad-kid much appreciated. Now I recall that I got an original flyer and it had Tropics one side & Embassy the other-interesting!
This machine is my most popular with guests and I am in awe at the electro-mech design and engineering of these machines. Mine is fully operational but badly needs a cosmetic resto. Because these machines are so difficult to transport I think they really take a transport battering. The cabinet has lots of scrapes and chips and someone has previously painted the pin cover a non original blue which looks awful.
Fortunately Chris of St Louis Ball Bowlers is really helpful and stocks lots of parts for these machines. I will post the resto as I move forward.

#1270 5 years ago

I do really like he style of bowlers I. The earily 60s. My 61 princess bowler is always a favorite. I have it electronically solid with just an update to the red pin lights. I also have a pile of spare parts from Doc doom back in the day. The reason I haven’t refinished it yet is because I am procrastinating on a 5 foot extension. I made the dumb mistake to not but the Formica tops the seller of the doner offered me. And I have to make two more legs to get back on track. I figure a nicer than mine front lane would give me enough to cut down a mid lane section.

Happy to help. I have a couple of questions
- Is your machine export specific? Does it have different transformers and a different reset coil to handle the higher voltage in Australia?
- What is your favorite game mode to play?
- What is your opinion of the game mode "Spares"?

My machine had been imported from the US ex Long Beach Ca so it has original 110v elecs-I use a step down transformer 240v>110v.
Very rarely do we play other than regulation although on occasions use flash which is popular. Now that you ask I am reminded never played spares-must try when resto finished.
I spoke to Chris of St Louis Ball Bowlers this morning (just a super helpful great guy) and I had not realised that in this era for every shuffle alley machine there was a 'brother' ball bowler hence Embassy/Tropics-not sure how well known that is.

Have wanted to buy a Hamms Scene O Rama but prices very high as is shipping for this item to Australia.
So settled for a Hamms beer barrel which arrived today but much to my disappointment it is the unlit version.

hamms2 (resized).jpghamms2 (resized).jpg

hamms3 (resized).jpghamms3 (resized).jpg

Apparently some US states did not permit lit beer signs hence this version. Although the x8 scenes flip without being lit the unit lacks presence so I am anxious to convert to a lit unit. A Google search reveals a barrel with a lighting unit.

hamms1 (resized).jpghamms1 (resized).jpg

It seems to be a 4w 6in fluoro. Would appreciate any suggestions on where in the US I might pick up the 110v tube, starter and flouro end holders. Thks Wayne

#1275 5 years ago

Neat find. Although you are seeking original lighting, would led lighting be a good solution?

Found something that will work
https://www.amazon.com/GE-Fluorescent-Linkable-Workbench-10167/dp/B001ET6D8E/ref=sr_1_1

The description is 8 inch fixture but the bulb used is a 6". You will need to modify it but it's cheaper than buying individual components.

#1279 5 years ago

I have several "motion" beer signs in my game room, including the Hamms scene-o-rama and have converted all of them to LED strip lighting. The UV from fluorescent lighting degrades the already weak plastic and turns it yellow on about every sign, so installing LEDs prevents further degrading, and provides much less heat and even lighting.

You can remove the ballast and starter, then install a small 12 volt power supply to power up the strip LEDs. Or, you can leave all the existing lighting and affix the strips to the original tubes...that will maintain originality, and improve the life of the sign.

Cool, is there any operational difference between them?

#1282 5 years ago

Here is the lane extension I started building. Needs alittle work on the back side to accept the other lane properly. If anyone has a front lane Formica section let me know. Needs to have 58 1/8 inch of useable space. I would actually like to eat a nicer front lane top and cut down the current one in the game. I also need two legs.
Thanks.

No, They are about the same operation, the mechanical set ups are just laid out in different design, but they both operate the same.

I am just so grateful cad-kid that you went out of your way to help on this and suggest a product. There is no way I would have found that product.

Anyhow the product arrived from Amazon US and I stripped the outer body to devise a fit for the components to fit within the Hamms beer barrel light area:

canon17102018 003 (resized).JPGcanon17102018 003 (resized).JPG

I found that a section of cable duct worked really well as the component cradle:

canon17102018 001 (resized).JPGcanon17102018 001 (resized).JPG

I removed the switch & cable connectors (would not fit in space)

canon17102018 002 (resized).JPGcanon17102018 002 (resized).JPG

arranged for the cable (white) to be channelled through to the rear of the machine:

canon17102018 005 (resized).JPGcanon17102018 005 (resized).JPG

and all finished and working:

canon17102018 006 (resized).JPGcanon17102018 006 (resized).JPG

canon17102018 007 (resized).JPGcanon17102018 007 (resized).JPG

Just to recap when I bought this barrel I had not realised that certain US States at the time did not allow lit beer signs and I (damn it) got an unlit one which was hopeless. But thanks to cad-kid it is now converted to being lit and I trust it respects the original install on lit machines.

That's Scientific Machine Batting Practice, right? Yea, scoop it up!
Years back, when I was still fresh into the hobby, I picked one up for $10.00
Didn't know what I had. Someone took advantage, and I traded it for a C.C. pinball (Bronco)
I do now have another one, but it was much much more than $10.00

Since I'm here, last Sunday I did the completion of a Bally Bowler.
Late September, I took the worse ball bowler that I had out of the
barn and did much sanding and body work. It was missing the pin
unit, pin hood, ball lift motor and belt, and entire head. I pieced a
head together, and dozens of hours later, I have a nicely saved
machine. I'll probably keep this one and put it out. I like those
Ballys. Even the small balls..
