Quoted from AlexF:

Yep, that's exactly what it needs. I looked up old unopened packs of cigarettes on Ebay. I was surprised to see some of them sell for more than I paid for the machine.
ebay.com link » 1937 Vintage Pall Mall Red Cigarette Pack Unopened Cellophane Rare
Some candy cigarette packs with vintage style labels will do the trick I think.

Yes Alex-I really like these old vendors but 'stocking them' seems a real issue. I recently picked up a 'ballpoint pen' vendor but have found it impossible to pick up a thin 5in damn pen which is needed for the machine to operate.

Quoted from Mopar:

I got thinking, and thought maybe "SMC" stood for Shipman Manufacturing Company.
So I googled it in, and found one Art Show like this one from the 50s, and also found
out that they produced a wooden one in the 30s. The company opened in 1932 and
went on into the 60s. I found other vending type machines that they produced, but didn't
spot a cigarette machine like yours. Maybe somewhat rare.. (T)

I think they may be the same company from that era. Here is a badge from a 1937 Hershey's machine.

It looks like there is still a SMC in the vending business. Not sure if it is the same one.

Your situation is a bit worse than mine. If I were to source some vintage cigarette packs they would just sit displayed behind the window. If you manage to find a bunch of old pens for your machine and fill it, some game room visitor may end buying one for a quarter.

Yup, the Art Show has that same logo but so small I couldn't make out Shipman
without a magnifier so then googled, and yeah, sure thing..

Quoted from AlexF:It looks like there is still a SMC in the vending business. Not sure if it is the same one.

I also saw that when I googled and it had a number that I did call to check
if the answering machine gave any info, but more less just the common "leave
a message". I do believe that I read the present one is from Los Angles..

Just picked up this United Tempest.

Cleaning 24 Score Reels was a huge PITA!!!!!

How about all those little ogeesis clips that seem to just disappear? Be sure to have extras - NEXT time.

And use synthetic grease and oil, not petroleum based. Makes a big difference up the road. I went through the same procedure on my United Skippy, and took days to do. In the end, it's all worth it.
img04 (resized).jpgimg04 (resized).jpg

#1057 6 years ago

HA! Had to do the same thing to my Skippy when I got it. I think I went out to the garage around 6pm and when I was done it was around 3am... Didn't realize it was that late until I was done. Probably spent about 30-45 minuets of that looking for clips. Only managed to do it 3 times. After that it was smooth sailing.

The only thing it still does is when playing multiplayer game if the last bowler blows but has the 10 pin up it will add one point to every player. I assume that either the player unit is resting too soon or that 10 pin is scoring too late. Maybe there is something off in the score motor? I haven't been able to figure it out.

#1058 6 years ago
Quoted from Pugsley:

I assume that either the player unit is resting too soon or that 10 pin is scoring too late. Maybe there is something off in the score motor?

Are you saying when playing a 6 player game, and the 6th player blows, but makes the 10 pin,
the first 5 players will get an extra point?

#1059 6 years ago

Doesn't need to be a 6 player, will do it on 2-6 player game, but yes that is what it does. Im pretty sure its the 10 pin that does it. Its been at a friends house for a year now but playing it a few weeks ago that seems to be what it does.

#1060 6 years ago
Quoted from Pugsley:

will do it on 2-6 player game,

Yeah, that's what I thought you were saying. I can understand only the
player before, but all 5 on a 6 player game is what makes my eye brows
go down. The last point to score off of the score motor's wiper board would
be the 10 pin. Can't be in the Player-Step-Up-Unit if it only happens on the
10 pin. Is maybe the score motor's wiper board a little off? Assuming the
wiper turns clockwise, can the board be turned a bit counter clockwise?
But still doesn't explain all prior players getting the extra point.
You might have to put the best player last so he doesn't open..

#1061 6 years ago

Yeah... im going to be going over there today and I might look at it and see if I can change that timing. Is the wiper for the player reset and 10 pin on the same board / set of wipers?

#1062 6 years ago

On the ball bowlers, they are both on the score motor's wiper board
so I'm sure it's the same with your machine, but still can't understand
how it gives the previous players all 1 point. By any chance, when this
happens, do the score reels reset relays energize one time?

Man they are big . looks at almost 5meters long or about 16feet in the old money .
You guys are lucky you have large basements
One question , Anyone know which Bowler is the Longest ever made?

#1068 6 years ago

Funk/Bowlingo and MiniLanes (As seen on The Price is Right) all made them as long as regulation lanes.

Hey gang,
thought I'd share just a few of my bowlers and my Williams 60' Official Baseball.
Pics are older, but all is still here.
The bowlers are a Gottlieb Bowlette, Nice original Midget Alley, United Sure Fire Shuffle bowler and the League Big Ball Bowler.
Gun games another day.
Unfortunately they just don't get used as much as they used to, but pins stay busy.
And thanks to all for sharing. Lots of fun stuff out there.

I thought everything was supposed to be left dry?

Just starting on my first bowler, and figured it was pretty much the same as a pinball machine.

What is different, and what is the same? Any help would be appreciated here!

Thanx, Eric

Actually, all wiper boards should be cleaned and lubed on pinball and bowlers.
Saves a significant amount of wear especially on score and flash motor
wipers (along with their boards)..

On the score reels, there can be a metal on metal pivoting piece (depending on model). Some lube is good there also. But remove the old lube first.

Recent electrical toy in my game room. I'm learning how to be a telephone operator in the process. Found this at an estate sale and knew nothing about it, so went on to a learning curve. After adding ten telephones and a ton of wire, it is now fully functional. Basically an intercom, not attached to an outside line (who has that anymore?) but still a cool toy. Vintage and antique phones scattered throughout the game room makes it complete.

Cmon you've got to be able to use an outside line!! How cool is that?

Copper telephone lines are becoming obsolete. Just a matter of a few years, and no phone company will exist who uses copper. They will all cash in on that expensive copper, tear down the lines and poles, and jump on cellular technology. Or, it's going to fiber optic communications today. See, the copper provided a powerful "ring" signal, 90 volts at about 30 Hertz. The current technology (Magic Jack, and so on) uses low level signals which would not be able to ring an old-school phone.

Plus, the cost of a land line today makes the very best cell phone package look mighty inexpensive. And you don't have the long distance flexibility you get with cell phones.

#1087 6 years ago

You need to hook that up with a Dialed In!

On a happier note when Maria (The Hurricane) hit the Florida Keys the news was down there and talked to the only person who had phone service after the storm. All the cell towers were knocked down but they had, yes a land line.

But land lines only are good if the telco has power or until their battery back up goes down. Generators at the CO's but remote pops run off of battery back up when power is lost and only last so long with no power. Speaking from experience go without power long enough and see what will happen to that land line.

#1090 6 years ago

and most land lines aren't real lines. They are basically magic jacks in a box outside your home.

I agree. It's my favorite Manikin game..
I have flip the score before, but I'm not sure if I
ever had 80 points with 4 shots remaining..
Maybe the first Player accidently gave the 2nd
Player some added points..

No no. That picture was taken right after I rebuilt that score reel. It was gummed up and sluggish. So it would never reset to 0. That’s all fixed now.
