A freind who knows I'm into pinball found this at an estate sale yesterday he sent me these pics and a few more and paid for it for me I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. (He said what ever is on the backglass wipes off.

A mid 60s United Shuffle. Still had the larger score reels, good deal.
I don't think I've seen that particular title. Looks good..

Thanks When my friend called me and told me the price I said buy it, he said well at 11 everything will be 25% off I said buy it. He said no at 1:00 everything will be 50% off. We live in a small town and I knew I was the only one who would probably buy this so he waited till after 1 and i got it 1/2 price. In this case not being home Saturday saved me some money

#1005 6 years ago

Playing partners on an old shuffle can be a great time. I remember a whole bunch of
machines ago when I only had the 1956 Shuffle, Pool table, and the ping pong table,
I had at least as good of a time as I do now, but of course being such an enjoyful
Wintertime hobby, the machines will never stop..

Im looking at a Chicago coin small ball bowler "Bowling League" or a united big ball 13ft table called Jumbo. Any advice as to which is a better machine?

#1008 6 years ago
Quoted from Pinstein:

Im looking at a Chicago coin small ball bowler "Bowling League" or a united big ball 13ft table called Jumbo.

I had a Jumbo but traded it before I went through it. 13' for a big ball bowler is short, but being a split
alley, it can be extended. I traded that Jumbo years back and just last weekend I was talking with the friend
that I traded it to and he brought up that it was a contact bowler which I hadn't remembered. It has no
rollovers (or at least that certain Jumbo didn't) and the contacts were in the pin head and he said that they constantly
needed readjustment. Maybe some Jumbo models has rollovers. Does the machine that you're talking about
have rollovers? If not, and you can get it for a decent price, I'm sure you won't lose and can always resell,
or maybe you'll be able to get the contacts to stay in adjustment. I've never worked on an United non-contact
bowler, so I can't say if there's a trick to it or not, but if you do get it to be reliable, it would be a better bowler
especially if an extension to lengthen it up was added. Plus, I think that one has the girl on the backglass which
doesn't hurt its appeal..

#1009 6 years ago

Lane extensions seem impossible to find so don't count on them unless you plan to make one.

#1010 6 years ago

I have made them for Chicago Coin Big Ball bowlers, and also all but
the formica for the MBA bowler..
I had goose neck C.C. bowlers, and 13' seem very short. The pins on
the Jumbo aren't so far forward, so it won't seem as short, but if you have
the room, a 20 foot bowler is nice, or at least 16'..

#1011 6 years ago

Thanks, Im leaning now towards the small ball bowler as it seems the bowling area is longer. The jumbo Im looking at does have lane switches. Ive just learned its missing the motor/sprocket and chain and the gentleman is wanting 1700 and the backglass is really rough. The bowling league is complete with a good backglass and I believe is only about a 1ft shorter in foot to pin length than a 16fter, that plus the smaller balls may prove more challenging and fun.

#1012 6 years ago

Don't go less than 16. if you don't have the room , then honestly, you might as well get a puck/ shuffle alley.

#1013 6 years ago

Yeah, $1,700.00 for a nonworking, non-complete common Big Ball
Bowler is much. And yes, not going under 16' is best, although a 14'
small ball bowler, which is the larger standard size for United and Bally
(and I thought C.C. also) is decent size for a 3" ball bowler..
One thing, a small ball bowler is good for all ages. The ball fits pretty
comfortably in pretty much all hands..

#1014 6 years ago

I'd love to get one of these bowlers!!! Where do y'all find them?

Not mine but I just repaired this for a collector.
Peppy the clown , Looks like it was made/ assembled here , maybe supplied in kit form from the US and the rest built here as all the electric fittings are aussie made. ie the power supply control pot , the flouro end sockets and ballast etc . I did find a date code on the control pot 1970 .

It's been awhile since I've had a chance to flaunt my ignorance, but here goes. I'm calling upon all you experts to help with my new project...it's an old acme/advance shock machine. I know it is missing a lot of pieces and I'm not really sure how it needs to be wired; however, my immediate puzzle is a piece that was included, but not attached to anything. Even more interesting, when I try to find images of this machine, most do not have this piece but I found one that did. In any case, can anyone tell me what this is? It's wrapped in a tissue paper underneath is foil.

#1020 6 years ago

I'd have to make an educated guess that it's a capacitor. It is what stores the "shock" that you get.

As for what value, you'd need to experiment a bit. Likely a 400 or 600 volt part, maybe 2 microfarad. Just a guess though.

I was thinking a capacitor; however, the way the machine works is you grab two handles, one of which turns. As you turn the handle, a coil moves on a rod over another coil causing the voltage to increase. I always think of a capacitor as a fast release of energy as opposed to slowly increasing. But I am pretty ignorant about electrical components and circuits.

Yes, variable transformer. Does this machine plug into A/C mains? Or did it operate off battery?

If battery, then there must be some sort of "chopper" circuit. Transformers don't work with D/C.

Many years ago, I took apart a vacuum tube car radio (note: NOT stereo ) It had a part in it (called a vibrator, IIRC) that would switch the 12DC from the car battery on and off very rapidly so it could be fed to a transformer to get the high voltages needed for the vacuum tubes. If your machine operated off battery, then I suspect it used something similar. If so, my best guess is it is a capacitor that went across the contacts of the vibrator to prevent arcing which leads to contact erosion.

If it works on A/C, then all bets are off and I just made everyone suffer through a history on vintage electronics for no reason.

Best of luck.

I think you are onto something....I actually started another thread to see if I can get this thing running. Here it is:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/help-electricity-experts-acme-advance-shock-machine

You'll notice in the diagram I found, there is something called a vibrator switch. I figured it was akin to a slam switch...obviously I was wrong. I'm not sure if this info gets me closer or farther from figuring out how the thing should be wired but it definitely solves that mystery. If you are feeling like a challenge ...feel free to opine on my other thread. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

My new pick up today a 1960 Bally "SKILL DERBY".
It is the DELUXE version and that makes such a huge difference in game play, with having the horse "winning betting odds" and also the credit wheel on the playfield.

Very rare and fun game to play and the horse racing animation is very cool to watch.

It will look awesome next to my Bally "SKILL ROLL".

About 2 months ago Fortytwo and I started a new YouTube channel called Pinball Mayhem. We have about 10 videos out so far and things are going good. Our goal is to make videos showing a little bit of everything about pinball & arcade hobby & machines (mods, game play, what ever).

Today's release is on a 1962 Chicago Coin Princess bowler. It's an overview of the game & shows some game play.

Let me know what you think,
Jeremy

Got me a shuffle bowler!
It was a great price, and in pretty good condition.
My brother and I had to haul it out of a very dirty basement.

JESUS.......this thing is heavy.

I hurt all over right now.

1948 United 10th Inning

Enclosing a few pix and a short video of game play of an early EM baseball game:

Neat game with 2 flippers and 11 kick out holes. According to the advertisement it is the smallest and most compact baseball game and has a rotating upper playfield.

The playfield was professionally restored and although the coin mech has been replaced, it now takes nickels instead of pennies.

Just picked up this neat little cigarette machine this week. I don't smoke but like tobacco related collectibles. Partly because my hometown has a strong history of tobacco production and also because it just looks appropriate in my old school digs.

It's made by a company named Shipman. They made quite a few different vending machines and at least one trade stimulator.

Nice one Alex. A few old packets would look great in the machine.

Yep, that's exactly what it needs. I looked up old unopened packs of cigarettes on Ebay. I was surprised to see some of them sell for more than I paid for the machine.

ebay.com link: 1937 Vintage Pall Mall Red Cigarette Pack Unopened Cellophane Rare

Some candy cigarette packs with vintage style labels will do the trick I think.

#1048 6 years ago

That is a nice little machine..
Does it say if Shipman is out of Los Angeles, or
maybe has "SMC"?

#1049 6 years ago

Yes, Los Angeles.

#1050 6 years ago

I got thinking, and thought maybe "SMC" stood for Shipman Manufacturing Company.
So I googled it in, and found one Art Show like this one from the 50s, and also found
out that they produced a wooden one in the 30s. The company opened in 1932 and
went on into the 60s. I found other vending type machines that they produced, but didn't
spot a cigarette machine like yours. Maybe somewhat rare.. (T)
