I have a prototype 1989 Williams Police Force, only known one left in exceptional shape and excellent shape. Found in North Corolina where is sat for 30 years, nearly mint, a couple of weeks ago. Not sure what to do with it. Anybody know anything about it?

Quoted from xTheBlackKnightx:

There is absolutely NO reason to reclear coat a NOS playfield.

BS

There are plenty of reasons to cc a nos pf. The main one being inserts that are loose or uneven.

Correcting that and sealing it is a perfect reason to clear it.

Owner preference is a reason too. One you may not agree with but it is a reason.

If it's not preps right it will go bad? No Shit.

Why does anything need to 'be done' with it? Keep it as a great little game, and a prototype of it's model.

Quoted from xTheBlackKnightx:

^ BAD ADVICE ^

The reason you should clear NOS playfields (especially 70 through 80s) is that the wood fibers have never been compressed.

When the games were new, the ink and lacquer coatings were fresh and soft.

Back in the day, as the wood fibers became compressed and dimpled by the ball, the soft coatings would follow along.

BUT now that those coatings are 40 years old, the lacquer has of course become brittle.

As the wood fibers start to become compressed on a NOS playfield, the lacquer and ink quickly chips away.

Making matters worse, the cupped inserts on many NOS playfields create tons of airballs, further accelerating the playfield wear.

-

I have hundreds of emails from pinheads who installed a NOS playfield unprotected, and then ask "Is this normal????" when the game has tons of chips and keyline wear in only a few months.

One recent victim was a New-In-Crate populated Supersonic playfield that a guy installed last year.

The seller told him "Just install new rubber and drop it into your cab. Instant brand new Supersonic!!!!"

Sadly, he followed that advice.

Read what I said, then provide an opinion.

I stated NOS CLEAR COATED playfields (which did not occur in test nature until 1988), not lacquered or tuff coated for purposes of added coatings starting from the 1940s. Nor did I state, if a playfield had imperfections, or stored improperly that this did not provide value.
Nearly everything was related to older games that used lacquer.

#1 reason games are damaged are lack of proper maintenance and neglect, not the materials or coatings regardless of age.
Stashing NOS playfields in boxes is great if you want to use them as wall hangers.
Too many games have passed through my hands to change my opinions at this point in my life.
Too many technical aspects not understood.

If a person wants to stash 30-50+ year NOS lacquered playfields until they turn to dust, keep them looking like mirrors, try to speculate large monetary gains, or pass them onto new unknowledgable owners without proper instructions on handling, preparation, protection, that is not an issue I can solve.

This turns into the same stupid idiotic debates for the past 25+ years of people such as doubting the viability and usefulness of TTCCG which I have saved hundreds of backglasses (and used only when required), but then someone decides to put one in the back of the trunk of their car in the middle of a Wisconsin winter and blame the coating for the issue of their glass peeling, delaminating or veining because of the temperature variations of glass and ink screening contractions.

Vid is right, on one specific account.
Lack of education on this website is rampant, long standing, with inmates running this asylum.
I have tried to help people on this site, and provided various points of unique prototype and useful history which people fail to appreciate repeatedly.

Good luck.

I'm not even sure why you posted this into this thread.. this doesn't have anything to do with Rare or Proto parts to show off.

Vid has a freakin' HUGE thread about this exact thing. Go post this there, please.

Wow just noticed this topic I started has gotten over 1000 post now. I just went back and looked at all the pictures and noticed I've been lacking in posting pics of stuff so I'll have to get back on it asap. Meanwhile keep it on topic with more STUFF and less of the actual games if we can.
Thanks

More items out of my backglass archives.
All these backglasses are NOS from an original factory distributor in the 1980s (Bally) and early 90s (Data East).
Back at that point in time, spares were more easily acquired, as their was little "flipping" going on and no significant internet traffic. Most backglasses were framed after the photos was taken or put back in their storage boxes.

Keep flipping

Another part from pinball history.

This Bally 4x29" cardboard pinball topper introduced with the game, Paragon (denoted on the backside of the factory flyer), and several other popular titles afterwards of the same era solid state period.

It was provided to operators to promote use of the Susan B. Anthony (SBA) dollar from 1979-1981, but not included with a game sale privately unless a distributor decided to provide one out of interest. These handout toppers were discontinued after failure of the currency in early 1982 (one of the reasons being lack of popularity and ease to be mixed up with quarters), although coin mechs on many games remained intact. The topper itself, being cardboard, often were thrown out in stacks, but still can be found once in awhile in warehouses unused. SBA coin door stickers have been reproduced (Paragon did not use one and many factory games did not have a Bally sticker either), however this topper has never been remade. Some operators cut out the word, "Bally" with an xacto, and simply installed their own version using the word, "New", behind the topper applying the topper to other manufacturers.

Younger enthusiasts might not recognize the coin, and I attached a photo, although the same coinage was attempted for reintroduction again in 1999, and failed a second time. The coin itself has never accrued significant value unlike the Eisenhower dollar with its imbedded silver content, and not considered highly collectible. Many uncirculated coins went to collectors anyway.

This topper was provided as a gift, and scanned to protect the image for archiving.

1981-S_SBA$_Type_Two_Deep_Cameo.jpg1981-S_SBA$_Type_Two_Deep_Cameo.jpg

Final note: I decided to redo the design as close to factory specifications, but without a perfectly matched Blondie Italic font style, the scaling is difficult. Very close though. Just for fun, no requests please.

Keep flipping,

I worked my way through college as a Denny's server back from 2009-2013. One day, a lady paid her entire bill, and tip, using a stack of S.B.A. coins. She left a huge pile right on the table. She also had some bicentennial Eisenhower coins mixed in. Weird.

I always liked them though, with the whole Apollo 11 insignia on the back.

It wasn't just Bally that experimented with this--some Gottlieb System 80 games have a SBA slot. I have a Gottlieb Timeline with 1 SBA for 5 plays

I have a handful of SBA coin mechs out of Gottlieb machines lol. They are in a big box of coin mechs somewhere in my stacks of boxes of other pinball stuff I refuse to get rid of lol. I’m a hoarder and I just realized it

Bally really pushed it starting with the KISS pinball machine. They even had a schools for it. The Bally distributor up here, Sandler, held the school at the White house ( fancy restaurant ) in Golden Valley. We got steaks, drinks, and a guy came from the US Mint, and we each got a bag of 5 Susan B Anthony dollars to keep, this was shortly before they went into circulation.

Best service school I ever attended.

i have 2 WCS94 goalie decals with striker as the goalie. i believe they came from John awhile back. not sure if they're rare. maybe someone else knows. can't seem to find em elsewhere.

btw, taking pics of em would require a LOT of digging. but if someone tells me they'll be worth $10k by Xmas, i'll start digging

It's possible as I collected a lot of those tokens out of games that came through here over the years.

Here's my pinball token collection the Coney Island token is a rare 25¢ copper token from the 70's!

So here's a strange pinball related rarity that I actually just took pictures of to let go. An original and still in original shipping package 'Pin Pong' 1974 Atari schematic. Although Chicago Coin's Super Flipper is noted as the first video pinball on IPDB in 1975 - this came out in 1974 and I believe it's actually the first video pinball. It has 13 detailed pages and is roughly the size of a 27" flat screen. I think it's so detailed because the machine predates the use of ICs/Chips in the design.
