Quoted from MustangPaul:Hey that looks great. If your interested here's a couple of pictures of a Pinsiders Ironman with my amber Leg light-ups on. I have other colors available also.
Cool Paul! But they are a little past my mod tolerance threshold.
I keep most of them pretty stock. I've powdercoated about a dozen pins I guess.
Ironman - ruby red
Spiderman - red
AFM - gloss black
No Fear - gloss black
Indiana Jones - brass legs and habitrails
WCS - purple legs to match the purple in the cabinet color
Congo - gloss black
CFTBL - gloss black
TOTAN - gold antiqued legs
TOM - gold passifated legs
Bugs Bunny - gloss white legs
Getaway - gloss black
Lots of my Williams machines have gloss black legs to match the cabs. It's a good way to recycle all the crappy rusty legs too. We blast them and powdercoat them and reuse them. When you live in NZ you can't just get new legs from Pinball Life for $40 a set ... It costs like $200 to buy them and freight them. It costs me $60 a set to blast them and powdercoat them so that's a winner.
rd
Quoted from PeterG:Can you show your spiderman and CFTBL. I have those and wondering if I would do Spidey red or blue, CFTBL black or Chrome.
Sure. Spidy looks a little pink in these photos, it's actually red ... But that's what happens with an iPhone at night time.
CFTBL isn't at this house, but you should be able to see a black one on the net, I've seen others around.
rd
Hey, has anyone got any pics of an Austin Powers with some Powdercoating done?
I seem to remember some pics a while back with red or blue color armour ....
rd
Quoted from Esoteric_rt:Your hooked now mate...only 1## machines to go
Nah ... Just a few I've been meaning to do for a while and haven't got around to get.
Austin Powers being one of them. It's Fiona's machine so I'll do it up for her birthday. Cause that's how I roll...
rd
Quoted from Butch2099:Do the weld spots coming through bother you guys? I was expecting them to come out perfect like a factory machine would. I'm told that it's totally normal.
It bothers me to the point that I probably wouldn't do it again.
Yeah, that happens sometimes. Even though my stuff is soft media blasted.
I guess you could fill the holes with weld and file it back to smooth it out.
rd
Quoted from john32:Does anyone have a powder coated World cup 94. I have to replace a damaged rail and was thinking why not powder coat it before I put it on..
Mine is similar to the other one posted, except maybe a little darker to match the purple on the cabinet.
This was another machine with god awful rusty legs so I had them done to match.
rd
Quoted from Astropin:I paid $165 for the metallic bronze on my IJ. It included the lockdown, door, side rails, legs and leg bolts. And that was paying extra for that color.
That's about what I pay (but in NZ dollars). Hey, I doubt it's as nice as what Alex (Pinchroma) would do, but it works ok for me.
rd
Quoted from J85M:Bump for any Gloss black Tron pics?
That'd look the same as any normal Tron. But glossy.
rd
Quoted from hd60609:One thing that I have always been curious about was the "Red" trim molding on IMVe doesn't quite match the beautiful red armor people are installing. Has anyone changed out the red T-molding to gold. I imaging the gold T-mold/candy red armor will look more like his suit. Just curious if anyone has done it.
The first run Ironmans like mine (2010) have gold head trim as standard.
rd
Quoted from MrBellMan:I actually prefer the black contrast.
That's why I didn't have the coin door or shooter done.
That color really suits the game.
I agree, Pink coin door would be too much. I always keep them black, personally.
rd
Quoted from Neal_W:Tilt Graphics was showing off vinyl wrapped legs at the Pintastic show
I've seen it all now ....
rd
Quoted from libtech:Heres my trek I just got finished, went dark metallic blue, love it!
Looks good, that's the same way I was going to go with mine. Good to see it works nicely!
How did you handle the plate on the lock bar? Drill out the rivets then re-rivet it back on?
rd
Quoted from libtech:Yea drilled it, I bought a polished one from mezel, the real pain is the half tubular rivets, dont use the c-clamp one off ebay get a press since the lip on the lockbar makes it real tough!
That's the only reason I haven't done my STPro and GOT pro ... Haven't got a rivet press and too lazy to get one lol
rd
Quoted from AlexSMendes:Not powder coated, but...
ps: (ain't my machine)
Bummer that someone got their fingers jammed in that coin door!
Hopefully that blood will clean up ok.
rd
Quoted from sohchx:That's badass!! Fits the theme too. I am about to wrap an arcade game control panel with that shortly. Cheap and effective!!
I did the legs etc too. Came up pretty swish considering the product used cost about $10 lol.
rd
Haven't stripped a SPIKE game before .. you have to take off the power cover to get to the head box bolts. Don't get a shock!
Here's the stripped GOT and the colour I am going for. All metal parts will be gold, except the coin door.
rd
Quoted from pinlawyer:See below
That's a lot of bling Pinlawyer!
I've never seen a white Sopranos before...
rd
I got my GOT pro parts back today.
Well, most of them, I must have left the shooter housing behind.
I'm not usually a fan of gold powdercoat, usually it looks a bit "deluxe beige" to my eyes. Like on MMR. On traditional machines like that I would go gold plating.
But gold plating didn't suit this machine. Too blingy. So pacific gold powdercoat it was, and it matches up the fonts used and the playfield colours nicely, IMO.

Quoted from MustangPaul:Now ya need beatmasters amber lit shooter housing and my amber Leg Light-Ups.
That'd be bling overload for me, Paul ... one man can only handle so much bling, ya know ...
rd
Quoted from Colsond3:just not sure on PC'ing this one, especially as Vampire is rare with very low production of 799 units. Thoughts?
I wouldn't be doing it, personally. I prefer classic games to be ... "classic".
But it's over to you at the end of the day. You could always get a second cartridge to powdercoat and keep the original one. Legs are dime a dozen so no worries there. The job wouldn't be un-reversible that way.
rd
Quoted from ulmpharmd:Just using gold behind lasercut railing temporarily
The Ironman matches the rug quite nicely.
Really ties the room together.
rd
Quoted from MustangPaul:and my white ones would look killer on yours.
It's the same guy.
ABC! Always Be Closing (on leg light up sales!).
rd
Quoted from Staythirsty:Just picked up an AFM with yellow powder coating. Looks cool but not quite my preference. Shoot me cash offer or trade for a nice used stainless set.
You could redo it gloss black ... that looks pretty sweet on AFM.
Here's a pic of my one.
rd
Quoted from Skins:Don't be a cheapskate RD. Get those leg bolts powder coated black. Add in black levelers from pbl.
I like the contrast.
Plus the second you touch powdercoated bolts with a wrench the coating on the corners comes off. Stink!
rd
Quoted from Meegis:Can always get soft socket or plastic socket. Option links below.
Cool. Hope they fit my impact wrench!
rd
Here's another machine I've just done ...
Shrek usually has a yellowish powdercoat. It sort of matches Shreks face on the front of the cab. However when I bought this machine, someone had given the metalwork a shitty rattlecan paintjob in some awful green. And you can't match the original powder colour here, nothing was even close really.
So it was blasted back, and I went with a "swamp green" .. cause Shrek lives in a swamp.
Came up ok ... everyone seems to like it.
rd
Quoted from ninjabones:Met Pro. There are screws along the rail. Is there adhesive along the edge that has to be removed as well?
Nope, just screws. With a bolt at each end as well.
rd
Quoted from J85M:when I get my BM66 I want to powder coat the right ramp as the left ramp is already powder coated red
Are you meaning the habitrails (ie wireforms?)
Both ramps are bare metal in the attached picture. Pinchroma used to advise against powder coating ramps because they take a hammering. I would think you'll get dull trails up the middle where the ball goes.
If you do mean the habitrails, yep, powdercoat them any colour you want. You'll need to get the old coating off first, usually your powdercoater will sandblast them.
rd
Not quite finished yet (headbox and flippers still to do) but here is the RD STTNG Blackout Edition.
Everything is gloss black. All the nuts and screws are gloss black (well, a couple still to do ..) The ships are all hand painted up. This thing was a POS when it arrived here and slowly it has taken shape.
Good things take time ...
rd
Everything was rusty as hell on this machine. It must have been stored in some crappy wet warehouse for years.
All these bits were blasted and then powdercoated in gloss black.
All the bolts and screws I stripped back individually on the bench wire wheel, and double coated with black gloss Dulux spray paint.
Some got scratched on installation, so all those got hand painted with a brush.
All the spinner brackets, switch brackets etc were also finished by hand.
rd
Quoted from MustangPaul:Nice work there rd. You saved another :applause:one.
The positive of this machine were that the playfield and cabinet were both pretty good. I needed to sand down the cabinet bottom to tidy it up .. the customwood (MDF) had watermarks and some swelling. Not bad enough to replace it ... 30 mins sanding sorted it out.
rd
Quoted from J85M:RD that STTNG looks phenomenal man awesome work! Did you powder coat the ramp flaps as well?
No, they are all new ramps (others were very munted up ..) which came with new flaps. Flaps are just normal blackened steel.
rd
Quoted from Colsond3:That thing looks sweet RD. I like how the black practically hides the ramps and makes them blend in. Did you just use acrylic for the ships?
Sprayed them with Enamel and touched them up by hand. They aren't as nice as say Modfathers ... but for $2 paint and half an hour of my time they look ok. And much better than the stock stuff
rd
Quoted from Fliptastic:Not the most loved game out there, but my kids and I like it. Stern IJ in Illusion Root Beer by Back Alley
That looks pretty sweet.
Hard to beat when all those balls fall out of the chest, that's cool stuff.
rd
Quoted from Stones:Very nice Demo Man ramps and handles look great....first one ive seen pop up in this thread....
I thought I had posted my "black out" Demo Man here ... maybe I didn't.
rd
Quoted from modfather:Looks great in black Roto.
Everything looks good in gloss black. Well, almost everything.
rd
Quoted from Micky:I'm thinking of powder coating my legs, lockdown bar and rails for my Fish Tales but cant decide on a colour.
Is anyone who has had theirs done, able to put up some pics?
I haven't seen one I liked, to be honest.
Someone here did one in green, I didn't like the look of that personally, but each to their own.
I did my one in chrome and that looked pretty sweet IMO. I powdercoated the "rod" in a Gunmetal/bronze type colour. These are the only pics I have on my phone, but you get the idea.
rd
Quoted from pinball_faz:Neal_W Please elaborate... "Vinyl"??? Like shrinkwrap?
faz
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/vinyl-wrap-lockdown-bar-rails-etc
rd
Quoted from pinball_faz:I never would have expected this would hold up. That's really cool.... and if you don't like the color you can swap it out.
Those legs you did looked EXCELLENT!
faz
Thanks man!
That material was easy to work with when you got it right. Too much heat and it melted though! Just a question of having some patience, taking your time and it comes up good.
The material is made for cars, so it'll stand up to way more abuse than any pinballers can give it.
I think that whole carbon fibre Corvette machine job cost me like $10 worth of fake carbon fibre material. So it's cost effective.
rd
Quoted from Colsond3:Star Wars with Chris Pine? I haven't Seen that one.
Wars ... Trek ... whatever. Just another pinball machine.
rd
Quoted from Stones:Yea man......black is a must on Taxi.....
There was a super sweet Taxi with black gloss at TPF.
Usually I'm not big on powdercoating Sys11s but this was looking pretty good.
rd
Quoted from ImNotNorm:I figured chrome would look good....but the right blue could make it really pop!
It's nice seeing examples to help give you a better idea.
I saw one done in bright red ... while pretty "vibrant" it did suit the cartoony theme ok.
rd
EDIT google is our friend I could take it or leave it.
Quoted from Micky:Gloss black really does look good on most pins. It's what I'm planning to do to my No Fear.
Looks super sweet on No Fear. Especially with new cab decals.
I sold my one, but if I find a picture I'll post it up.
EDIT found some! Sweet looking machine.
rd
9 months later ... my custom Creature is done and lives again!!
Gloss black powdercoat to all trim.
Gloss black paint to all timber (inside and out)
All superfluous cabinet/head bolts removed (cabinet reinforced before restoration)

IMG_7096 (resized).JPG
IMG_7097 (resized).JPG
IMG_7098 (resized).JPG
Quoted from Stones:Holy sh^t.....that creetch is stunning. Did you do the restore?
Yep, from the ground up. Started as a very beaten import machine that had gone Chicago-Japan-Europe-NZ. Well travelled!
rd
Quoted from Plumonium:Do you need brand new rails and lockdown bar to have them powder coated. What if there are dings and scratches on them?
Then you'll have nice shiny powdercoated rails with dings on them.
You don't need new, tidy used ones are ideal.
If you do buy new, Pinball Life has raw steel legs (dunno about rails) that's the way to go. Because any finish on them has to be removed. So if they're raw steel, they can just be coated as they are.
rd
Edit: yep, they have raw side rails too ...
Quoted from Davi:Nice! I see tons of mods, but how is this linked to the word "LE"?
It’s a Limited Edition of 1.
I’ve never seen a coin door with a display in it before! My dick can watch tv while I play! Nice!!
rd
Quoted from Tuna_Delight:Yeah ... no. I'm not a big fan of orange trim on TRON to begin with. Just my personal preference though.
The cabinet is predominantly blue .. so blue would look better IMO. Like the Star Trek Pro I did that is posted earlier in the thread.
The other option would be to get the parts chromed, because we know how cool a Tron LE looks.
If you can find the right guy, the chrome should be around the same price as the powdercoat.
rd
Quoted from ahdelarge:Apologies if this is a n00b question....
I just dropped off my legs and rails etc to the powder coater for my AC/DC Pro. He said was it ok to powder coat over the stock Stern legs/rails. Do people generally do this or do they get them blasted first?
Thanks,
Adam.
All my stuff has always been blasted back to metal.
Also - if they go over the old textured finish, you’ll be stuck with a textured finish.
Most guys go for a smooth powdercoat finish.
rd
Quoted from ahdelarge:Thanks, Dave. As I have already dropped the legs and rails off and agreed to going over the old coat, I will take my chances and use this as an experiment. In the future, I will get it sand blasted first. Does your powder coat place do the blasting?
The old owner used to do it there. He did the blasting for nothing and charged me peanuts for the powdercoat.
After he went bankrupt (lolll) the new guy only does the PC - I have to use another dude around the corner who does “soft media blasting”
Still works out ok though. If I do a complete set of everything (legs, rails, lock bar, hinges, shooter housing) in a standard colour like gloss black, works out about $150 all up.
rd
Quoted from Colsond3:Gunmetal Gray is perfect for old Bally legs and coin doors to match original.
I do all my old Ballys in a similar colour. It has a particular name but it won’t be relevant outside NZ. 95% of the Ballys have that colour - I’ve done a couple in gloss black, Fireball 2 comes to mind.
And the new Led Zeppelin pin I’m doing, that’s all black hardware, even all the playfield stuff.

Here’s a Shadow that me and my buddy Warwick put together a few months ago.
Most metalwork powdercoated in gloss black - except the ramps that I polished up with a polishing wheel on my drill press.
Black suits this game nicely.

Scared Stiff - started as a well beaten route game. Full strip, cabinet restore, new ramps, and gloss black powdercoat on all the metalwork.
Just waiting for a couple of parts to finish it off.

Some games are just best left original.

Quoted from allsportdvd:Black ones look much smarter to me vs the explosion of colour on powdercoated machines, nice job!
I concur. Black looks good on pretty much everything.
Here’s gloss black on my purple CFTBL ...

CBA298D2-7340-45E3-ACAE-F1D275BE51CF (resized).jpegQuoted from pinballjah:For those replacing the metal plates on the Stern lockdown bars, I see a few pictures where people have used screws instead of the original rivets. Any reason why? I was planning on doing my AC/DC Pro but wasn't sure how the FIRE metal plate would look when replaced on the lockdown bar. Thanks for the help.
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Pinball Life sells these rivets, which I think will give it the same original look
https://www.pinballlife.com/semi-tubular-rivet.html
I thought I’d detailed my rivet process in this thread, but it appears I haven’t. Maybe it was somewhere else.
I carefully drill the end off the rivet, removing as little as possible. Just the mushroomed part. I use a larger drill bit to do this, maybe twice the size of the rivet. Keep the factory rivet and the washer.
Get the plate off, get the powder done, then reinstall the plate, rivet and washer. Should all still be pretty tight.
Then I use some JB Weld, mix it up and spread it liberally on the rivet and washer.
If you do it well, it looks totally factory.
You can see it on my GOT and ST that are pictured earlier in this thread.

If it’s a mint HUO game I would leave it stock.
Enjoy it for what it is …
No reason just to powdercoat it just for powdercoatings sake. Look at the picture you posted .. it’s a thing of beauty!
rd
Quoted from Jarbyjibbo:a huge plain black door right in the middle of the front of the pin
I’m exactly the opposite. 99% of the time a powdercoated coin door looks garish to me.
The black makes it “disappear” … when you see say a bright yellow one on TSPP it says LOOK AT ME I’M A COIN DOOR IM VERY BIG AND BERY UGLY AND VERY YELLOW lol
But each to their own.
rd
Quoted from Kerry_Richard:Still on the fence about the speaker / display on my EHOH. The black is very low subtle.
I think it looks good.
The way I go with my powdercoating is to make the pin look “enhanced stock” … ie the pin could have/should have come out of the factory in the colour you’ve done it in. If you go through my posts in this thread you’ll see some of them … all very “stock” looking.
Your display panel looks like “enhanced stock” to me so it passes my test.
With that colour you could do the coin door too - it wouldn’t stand out at all. Very subtle. That colour matches the art great. But the standard black door looks fine.
rd
Quoted from allsportdvd:on earth do you own 116 machines and have another 116 machines previously owned?
That does sound like a lot I guess. Lol
They come and go - I got my first one 30 years ago ….
Pretty happy with my current lineup. Someone asked me the other day “which pins do you want to get?” “Hmmmmm …. none”.
Quoted from allsportdvd:Must be a lot of big properties in Pukekohe, one of my staff lives there and has horses
Yes, it’s a rural area 40 mins south of Auckland.
Lots of market gardens on our side of town, and horses on the other side. Cows everywhere else.
Check out the dark volcanic soil … some of the best crop growing soil in the world. Pics taken up the top of our road yesterday while we were out walking. We live on the side of a dormant volcano. The whole of Auckland is built on 50+ volcanic cones.

Quoted from PinPickle:Machines look great!
Figure this is the best place to ask. If you take the coin door off properly, would you still be able to play the pin? This would be for a new Stern/JJP machines.
Thanks
You’d need to keep the door interlock switch pressed down. And maybe have the door controls plugged into the harnesss.
I’m not sure if the new Interlock switches are the “pull out to lock” type like they used to use. If they are - pull them out. If not, tape them closed.
rd
Quoted from Good-Times:In my area there's not a lot of volume work with the local powdercoaters
Talk to some local hot rod guys.
They’ll soon tell you who to use.
There will be a bunch around Sydney.
