Quoted from Colsond3:

Got the powder coated legs back today, and was finally able to erect this beast (that’s what she said ). Chuck at Bonehead Performance kicks ass...two day turnaround on the legs.
Also rewired the game over hologram.
Any thoughts on powder coating the metal panel under the joystick controllers? I might do the coin door in white also.

That is kind of a scary looking machine!!

Here is my attack from mars that Robert Stone powdercoated for me. I think the red looks great, just need to keep it out of the sun!

I really like the red on afm....Nice!

Thanks to everyone for posting pictures in this thread. It really helped me decide what I like....and what I don't like.

Robert currently has all the armor from my TWD. I'll be excited to get it back. Having the machine sitting on the floor in the room just looks weird, imamacualte, but weird.

Bought a Strikes N Spares and the side rails and lock bar were tarnished, like they had been wet for a while. Even though it’s not a high end game, I went the powder coat route. I chose black gloss with gold specks, which matches the inside of the game perfectly. Did the rails, lock bar, and the legs. I love it. Wish I had better lighting for pictures.

I love that speckled look...I'm thinking about doing something like that for my Kiss Premium......I'm such a slacker...I need to start getting some of my machines powder coated.....

I just brought a boatload of parts to my powder coater. Doing Candy purple w/flake for GOTG & GBPRE and black flake for SWPRE & STTNG. I hate having that many games down while he does it though

Apologies if this is a n00b question....

I just dropped off my legs and rails etc to the powder coater for my AC/DC Pro. He said was it ok to powder coat over the stock Stern legs/rails. Do people generally do this or do they get them blasted first?

Thanks,
Adam.

My powder coat guy always blasts the first. Thought it was needed for good adhesion. Maybe pm one of the powder coat guys on Pinside and get there opinion. That would suck if it started chipping.

In theory powdercoat is as strong as the coating benith it. Stern powdercoat is tough and will not provide any concerns of chipping. It's the same as doing multi layer powdercoat. The issue enlies if your coat as any oils, spilled beer etc, so it leaves a prospect of unknown. Blasting isnt as much for bonding as it is a uniform surface. So I dont know if you can get the best finish. Dont worry about chipping and in the UK powdercoat work is hard to get done. I'd just see how it turns out

All my stuff has always been blasted back to metal.

Also - if they go over the old textured finish, you’ll be stuck with a textured finish.

Most guys go for a smooth powdercoat finish.

Thanks, Dave. As I have already dropped the legs and rails off and agreed to going over the old coat, I will take my chances and use this as an experiment. In the future, I will get it sand blasted first. Does your powder coat place do the blasting?

The old owner used to do it there. He did the blasting for nothing and charged me peanuts for the powdercoat.

After he went bankrupt (lolll) the new guy only does the PC - I have to use another dude around the corner who does “soft media blasting”

Still works out ok though. If I do a complete set of everything (legs, rails, lock bar, hinges, shooter housing) in a standard colour like gloss black, works out about $150 all up.

if this guy is any kind of reputable business, he will sand blast first, just needs blasted for better adhesion, doesn't have to be pretty... if he's joe shmoe from down the street...…..you're prob screwed.

powdercoat doesn't" fill" like paint, it just covers.

Anybody have a pic of a game with this done? I was always curious how powder coat would turn out on Sterns and old DE games that had textured armor.

Been a little while since I have posted here. I'm doing research on Leds to use on Tron, placement, kits, etc. I came across this pic in an old thread. Not sure I like the split color scheme.....

[quoted image]

I just noticed your pic of Tron with dual color powder coat. That exactly like how mine was done...I like it, but to each his own. I can see why some may not. Fun pin to mod! Took me a while to find a nice one that wasn’t crazy price. Tron and LOTR were hard to find. I traded away a gold powder coated LOTR and I regretted it.

If you remember Paul, I used some on my Vamp. It is definitely more dull than true chrome, almost a little grayish. It is a little shiny though, but not something I would use if you want that true chrome shiny look.

I do all my old Ballys in a similar colour. It has a particular name but it won’t be relevant outside NZ. 95% of the Ballys have that colour - I’ve done a couple in gloss black, Fireball 2 comes to mind.

And the new Led Zeppelin pin I’m doing, that’s all black hardware, even all the playfield stuff.

Worth is relative... do you mean will it hold up to abuse or is it worth the price to get it done? Chris also answered it in the same thread the photo was from; In a home environment with proper maintenance, yes it should. I have a few guides and wireforms powder coated on my pins and they seem to be doing just fine.

#1447 5 years ago

Id say just mirror chrome it

#1448 5 years ago

Ive had a few of my games done . All parts were sandblasted down to bare metal first, even though two of the sets were brand new. Orange with flake on the GOTG looks reall nice & The Ghostbusters has a glow in the dark clear coat on it as well. And I cant find pics of my transformers
