Quoted from Pahuffman:

Who else out there? Surely someone has finished a theater recently.

I don't think I'm allowed to play yet because I'm still in the construction phase.

But if anyone wants any construction pictures, I have a basement finishing thread with pictures of the theater.

I went the full soundproofing route with clips, channel, backer boxes, dedicated HVAC, double 5/8" drywall and Green Glue.

I just started the subfloor in the theater. Then it's on to the riser, columns and fabric.

So if you're in the doghouse, you have to watch on the 13" CRT on the side couch?!?

#54 7 years ago

Ha Ha Ha Ha!
My son uses it for Smash Bros. Tournements and he"s a Bass Player and uses it as a music room.
The acoustics are very good in this room.

Zootopia is fantastic. I'd love to watch it on a 100" screen. When can I come over?

#56 7 years ago

Anytime.

I don't really have a home theater system... I got tired of my 4 y/o throwing things and breaking my TV's so I got this.... it's not like a lot of yall's. I went bargain style, wanted to spend what I would on a new TV . It does the trick and my whole family loves playing the Wii u and watching movies.

80" screen - $60
Epson 780p projector - $350
1000 watt Sony surround sound - $200
Mount,wires,cable channels, etc. - $70

I was thinking about doing the drop down screen also because I could fit 3 more pins in my basement if I did. The idea would be to pull the screen down from the ceiling in front of the backboxes but rest above the glass. It would definitely have to be motorized, but I can see how that would still get annoying after a while.

Progress

Also posted in the game room thread of course

120" screen + 240" couch

Still running the Epson 8345 & some basic Denon/Klipsch

Is it generally pretty easy to turn a ceiling fan into an outlet using a product like this so I can hang a projector? I know to turn off the breaker and where the wires should go, but I'm just wondering if there are any unexpected things I should look out for.

I can't see any problems with that. I took the light fixture down and wired a double plug in the ceiling and then mounted my projector close enough to plug it in.

Excellent. That's exactly what I was looking to do. Just didn't know if there was anything to look for if it was a fan. The fan isn't wired into the switch on the wall, so I'm thinking I should be able to do it pretty easily.

Curiosity bump. Also, I'm thinking of going with a BenQ HT2050A and building my own screen with Carl's Flexi-gray cloth. Does anybody have any experience with either of these products?

#65 6 years ago

Mine is finished except for a door and the second row of seating. It's just my wife and I, so I'm in no hurry to do the second row.

I went the full soundproofing route (Clips, channel, DD & GG) since my master is directly above the theater. The front walls and ceiling are Velvet covered panels covering dampening material. It absorbs the sound reflections under the soffit and eats up the screen wash. The rest of the walls are AT fabric covering a mixture of absorption and diffusion.

My Dad and I built the entire thing.

Thanks! I didn't have the room in my first house either and had to wait until we moved into our "forever home" about 2 years ago.

It' was worth the wait though.

Been a while since this was resurrected. Here's some updated pictures of my space. I painted the walls a dark, rich navy. I also put velvet on the ceiling and put what I had leftover on the walls. It was like buying an entirely new projector. If you haven't blacked out your walls, you need to do so immediately. It was a night and day difference in the picture. Amazing.

Do y'all use masks to improve the contrast on images that aren't 16:9? I was going to make some but didn't want to waste my time if its not a huge improvement.

For me it was features, later upgrade-ability, cost, and ability to run games with lights on or off without worrying about washing out screen...Also, for the size of my room, 17x15, a 75 - 85 inch screen is plenty big, any larger would lead to eye fatigue and a 4k/future 8k have far more features / true blacks etc than a comparative priced projector

My humble setup, viewing an 82" Samsung TV from about 18' away on the couch. ELAC 2.0 5.1 surround sound. To me the surround sound makes the experience. I use sound dampening/light blocking curtains as a divider, not ideal but most of the time we have one game on the big screen and another on the bar tv, so it's nice to be able to open up the whole room.
