Machine is a 1978 classic Stern Wild Fyre.
It has a mostly full field mylar that must have been installed after some years of play. As you can see, there are some wear spots under the mylar as well as quite a bit of dirt. Did the mylar installer even try to clean off this dirt or just throw down the mylar? Who knows?
Or is that dirt permanently ground into the playfield ink?
I've never tried to remove a mylar from an old Stern playfield or any machine this old. I have used freeze spray in the past with some success. I'm not looking into putting this thing back to collector condition, and it won't bother me to leave it just the way it is.
I hope to have it set up at The York Show next month for sale.
I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks,
Alan

I have exactly NO experience in this regard, thus, of course, I am of NO help with this matter, BUT... if you are planning selling this pin anyway, why don't you let the buyer decided to remove the mylar or not...?

Nope, leave it. If the Mylar was installed with that level of dirt and grime, there’s almost no chance a layer of wax was applied under the Mylar, and you will lift the remaining art right off that playfield.

Yep, leave it.

If you pull it, plan on doing extensive playfield painting. It would have to be a pin that I was doing a full resto to even consider it. Then I would test a small section to see just how much the original paint held up to the removal.

If you’re selling it leave it as is. Looks better now than with 1/2 the pf art pulled off and bare wood.

God I hate Mylar. Having said that I regretfully agree with the others to let it be. But god I would love to tear that shit off!!

No just leave it alone if your not used of doing this most times it will pull off all artwork

Gentlemen! You have convinced me.
I will leave the mylar alone, clean the perimeter dirt as best I can, wax and take it to York.
Thanks to all of you.
