Its also in that range of the Alvin Gottlieb soccer or football 2 player? But it's shorter than them and has woodgrain I still say its a Cocktail, it also has the reign of being the most expensive Cocktail out there.

Cocktails were built for sit down play, unless they had the optional stand some came with. You are free, of course, to call them anything you see fit.

Well that's what Joust is it's clearly for sitting down. I always looked at cocktails as like the cabarets Bally/Midway and others put out in the early 80's, there were for the more adult areas to vend in. Compact for convenience, non flashy woodgrain, intended for bars, hotel lobbies & department stores. Look at this Star Trip flyer they look like there at a casino! lol

I have to say top 5 cocktails judging them over all, I think Night Moves is the best one out there, Game Plan's Star Trip is a solid 2, Caribbean Cruse, Rotation, Joust...um maybe Eros or Star Battle??? (the rest are kind of rough) lol Night moves has a alphanumeric display in the pf, all Gottlieb system 80b extremely dependable parts, actually fun and has a killer soundtrack. Caribbean Cruise has the latest electronics (sys 3) but is kinda off-putting with the "man overboard" every 5 seconds, and the 4 flippers, It just has too much going on. The only thing I really like it for are the 3 drop targets. And unfortunately right now another score for the Gottlieb games both system 80b and system 3 parts are readily available unlike almost anything Gameplan. But this is just my opinion.

One of the many problems with a cocktail - besides that they make pretty crappy pinball games - is that they don’t even make a very good table.

That's what i thought when reading the topic headline Levi, are they fun!

    #56 5 years ago

Yes, more pinball can not be a bad thing. I think another head to head pinball would be awesome. Some of the designers we currently have in pinball could certainly cook up something unique and intriguing.

    Quoted from Sinestro:

Two traditional "80's style" video games back to back take up around the same space as one Pinball game.

My comment was in regards to how difficult it is to package cocktail games into an arcade. I've had many of them before, and they take up a lot of area if you intend to set them up for use.

But you can put them somewhere else than in arcade!
A pin in the living room is a no go for the wife but a cocktail table... may be.

And it can be fun in a bar - check North Star in Montreal for example; they have at least one.

have you played one? i have and it seems standup height to me.

there are a few Homebrew head to head projects going. the problem with head to heads at least is the BOM cost is high with needing double of everything. for example, ball troughs, sling mechs.. that's $200 in extra stuff over a traditional game right there.

I've played joust many many times. You stand at it.

    Quoted from Dayhuff:

They didn't go over big back in the day so why would they now?

Because previously, these were marketed to route operators or home owner get rich quick schemes. With the huge increase in the home market, these would make sense for want-to-be pin owners with little space. I started my collection with 3 cocktails, and I love them!

    #63 5 years ago

I see this being perfect for visual pinball. A nice free play that would entice customers to go play the real machines on the wall.

A tv screen and mini computer don't take up much realty.

    Flame away!

You ever try to use one as a table? There’s really nowhere for your knees
    To go.

I would have to disagree.I come home from work everyday and sit at my Caribbean Cruise and roll a joint or smoke my bong and watch a little bit of tv.I play my games way more than the other collectors I know(3-4 days a week) but I spend more time sitting in front of my CC than playing my games.fits perfect below my wall mounted TV in what would be dead space.

    #65 5 years ago

I have both Night Moves and Caribbean Cruise in my home office and they bookend my desk where I can roll my office chair between the two. Makes for a nice work break and from the drama of Pinside. During parties I often find people in my office playing them away from my gameroom and word of mouth spreads.
I enjoy them both and my guest do also.

I like having a bash on them too.

I guess the question is, would you pay $4000 for a new one?

my question is.. who wouldnt have bid over $1000 for this exquisite example, recently sold on ebay.

"Extremely rare, only 377 built, made in 1989. Great condition. I bought it new 15 years ago. First owner never took it out of the box. Very little use."

Why so cheap? Put the supreme logo in the middle of the PF and sell it for $9995!

More seriously... depends on what you get for $4000. Curious to see what a designer could do now with the physical limitations imposed by a cocktail table format.

    #70 5 years ago

A cocktail playfield could be placed lower in cabinet to allow room for ramps and wire forms. Playfields can now be produced thru mirco and produced much easier tha 30 years ago. P3-ROC system implemented. Lcd in apron or playfield.
My rough BOM added up over weekend given cabinet, transformer, boards, mechanics, lcd display and playfield, plastics and wire forms for 1000 units bulk buy is at $1830 each.
The problem, I dont have a programmer.

With interest back in them and pricing on the upside why not? For the record I think Joust is a cocktail as you have to sit down making it a table. My .02 cents.

    #73 5 years ago

They were a sort of a novelty and didn't set the industry on fire back in the day. The smaller form factor would just limit designers too much.

Does anyone repair Roy Clarke boards? I've got a dead board and normally would tinker on it but don' thave the time.

Check with Echo Lake, right up the road from you in Hinckley. Jim makes new allied leisure boards, but doesn't repair anymore.

John's Jukes sometimes has used ones.

    #77 5 years ago

Well nevermind. I went and tinkered with the board, replaced PIA 4 and voila the game works. I have a small issue where the b and c drop targets don't reset but the switches register in test that I need to figure out. Otherwise she is back!

Are these listed anywhere? I have someone that needs a board for a Eros One.

I would love to see them start making cocktail tables again.

Sorry, I thought some of the games shared the same boards.

Have you tried John's Jukes in Vancouver yet?
