Since I can't seem to find a database of which shooter spring strengths/colors are correct for which machines, I thought a thread for it might come in handy (thanks to Jeroen for the idea). What do you guys think?

#2 9 years ago

Good idea, I have had to change several by trial and error to get them right.

#3 9 years ago

sounds like a good idea to me, but I thought that most of the manuals called out the proper shoot rod string by color?

eg. from the cftbl manual

You are defiantly right, if you have a manual.

#5 9 years ago

The System 11 parts catalog has them for those games, not sure of the rest but parts books are pretty good.

#6 9 years ago

Not all manuals include that info either. I just checked out my Earthshaker and Pinbot manuals, and no mention is made of the shooter spring. Possibly that info was only included starting with WPC games? No idea about older Bally/Williams/Stern/Gottlieb/Data East/Sega manuals, but I tend to doubt it.

BTW75, I checked the "blue" catalog at Planetary Pinball pretty closely but couldn't find that info, what page do you see it on?

Whatever the case, I just thought this would be a handy place for it, so if anyone wants to chime in with a list, or link to a webpage, here's your place.

EDIT - my mistake, there it is on pg 81. Surprisingly they left at least one machine out though.

Yeah - its weird how things are organized. There are two charts for lots of parts.

Well, here's a start. All info from the Williams "blue" catalog.

WILLIAMS SYSTEM 9-11

Banzai Run: 10-148-4 green spring
Big Guns: 10-148-4 green spring
Comet: 10-148-1 standard silver spring
Cyclone: 10-148-4 green spring
F14 Tomcat: 10-148-2 red spring
Fire: 10-148-4 green spring
Grand Lizard: 10-148-1 standard silver spring
High Speed: 10-148-2 red spring
Millionaire: 10-148-3 blue spring
Pinbot: 10-148-3 blue spring
Road Kings: 10-148-1 standard silver spring
Sorcerer: 10-148-1 standard silver spring
Space Shuttle: 10-148-1 standard silver spring
Space Station: 10-148-5 (color?)
Swords of Fury: 10-148-1 standard silver spring
Taxi: 10-148-2 red spring

I notice a few anomalies, like Marco's site having SoF listed as a 10-148-2, so just use this as a guideline. A number of Sys11 games were missing from the catalog, so if you know the correct spring for your game, please add to the list.

Strangely, on page 2-0 you'll find others

Police Force 10-148-1 standard silver spring
Earthshaker 10-148-2 red spring
Black Knight 10-148-2 red spring

OOPS! I thought we covered that in another thread this afternoon already - must have been someone else asking.

I've had good luck making another order at PBL then sending a note in to them and they combine and refund shipping.

Flight 2000?

Gamatron?

I don't see spring info for Stern games listed anywhere. Maybe in a parts manual, but I don't have one.

Quoted from jibmums:

Space Station: 10-148-5 (color?)

Note: Space Station's spring was yellow.
This spring was the strongest heavy duty spring.

Still no older Stern details? Does anyone have a clue which spring an original Stern "Stars" would use? I'm trying to keep my latest restore near original.

#20 4 years ago

It’s only a spring, use whatever you like.

From Williams chart... it would be the neutral silver spring...
10-148-1

This might explain why i can't make it all the way round the earthshaker spiral skill shot on my restoration!!! could not figure out what was wrong!

I did a mod ... for the plastic spiral... I had to add a flat head machine screw to the two pieces of plastic to tighten up the spiral... then added a piece of clear Mylar adhesive to make the wall joint as smooth has possible.
The end result... made the ball fly out of the spiral like "a bat out of hell".

Nice thread ,I was just looking for spring strengths when this thread popped up this chart was very useful .I purchased this Shooter from Bill at Super Skill Shots .It’s a real incect in Amber .Looks insane in person .Had a green spring in (started only making the ramp 33%)then went to standard and that was the right call .

Since this thread popped up, might as well mention I've recently been putting reds in all my JJPs and they really do the trick. Might swap back with GnR and Hobbit though, they don't need strong plunges.
