I'm feeling sick to my stomach right now. The gentleman that bought my Addams Family this week just sent me the following pictures of what it looked like under all of the polyurethane wrapping.

Thanks a lot SameDay. YOU HAD ONE JOB TO DO!! And it wasn't to back a f&%$ing forklift into a pinball machine!!!

Thankfully the buyer is remaining calm and holding the shipping company responsible, but I still feel terrible for him... And for that poor TAF!!

Cheers,
Greg

No tempered glass ?

#3 10 years ago

Yikes! That sucks big time. Hopefully it'll all work out with the insurance.

#4 10 years ago

This is the one time it was good to have plate glass over tempered (which is usually never), or else there would have been a lot more cleaning to do. Sucks to see regardless....

#5 10 years ago
Quoted from McCune:

No tempered glass ?

That's dangerous!

#6 10 years ago

Oh man

Every time I have had a pin shipped, which is almost all of mine, I worry about stuff like this happening.

#7 10 years ago
Quoted from McCune:

No tempered glass ?

Evidently not.

#8 10 years ago

Oh man, that sucks really bad. With the way the damage is it looks like it was dropped? How was it shipped (on a pallet?)?

#9 10 years ago

That totally sucks . I hope they make it right .

#10 10 years ago

He will be replacing it with Invisiglass, but still you're right, it's dangerous.

#11 10 years ago

I was asked to ship it legs on so they wouldn't be tempted to lay it on it's back to make room in the truck/warehouse.

The only thing I can think of is a forklift backed into it or something...

#12 10 years ago

How does something like this get resolved with the shipping company? Do they pay for it to be repaired? Pay the full insured value? Pay the guy what he paid you?

This is my greatest fear with having a game shipped.

#13 10 years ago

We are both in the same province btw. 4 hour drive. And it still took 3 days to get to him. Guess they were too busy training forklift drivers to deliver it.

#14 10 years ago

Nobody trains forklift drivers. When I was 14, I was driving them through the warehouse as fast as possible just like everyone else. We didn't always make the corners.

BTW, sorry to see your damaged pin.

#15 10 years ago

or it was wrenched down my a monkey inside the truck and with the head being against the side, the body was torqued.
Looks like damage from that instead of a forklift.

Should have had tempered glass in there, but then there would have been a helluva mess to clean up.

Usually they send someone out to either take it, or take pictures of it and file a claim.

Then they will "work" on your case for a month, hoping you will go away.

Then as you call more often, they will be "finalizing their investigation" for a few weeks.

Then they will offer you a % of the amount of damage you are claiming.

#17 10 years ago

I feel for the new owner, makes me ill in the gut,
you had it rapped pretty well,
Shipping pins on legs can create issues, pallet is the safest way IMO, i know palletizing a pin is not for everyone, anyway hope it all pans out,

#18 10 years ago

Yeah, I hear you skywalker.

I offered to wrap/ship it however he wanted and was most comfortable with. He opted for legs on because it was a short drive and didn't want it being tipped on to it's back to save room in the truck/warehouse.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

#19 10 years ago

I have 2 pins in route to me right now, so when i see things like this it makes me cringe!
What a nightmare!

Ditto. I have a Williams IJ on the way that is in beautiful shape, and coming from a lot farther away. If it shows up like this I'll lose my s#!t.

no probs champ,
no disrespect to to the seller or buyer,
hopefully some good will come out of this

No worries mate, I didn't take your comments as being negative.

I try really hard to do everything I can in a transaction to make it smooth and put a smile on the other party's face. Clearly I failed to do that here.

#23 10 years ago

Wow that sucks man.

I shipped a pin and they guy paid for the shipping company to wrap it. I said no and pallet it myself.

You always need a 4x4 pallet and the machine in the middle with straps (buy motorcycle ones) and strap it down then wrap it.

Seems the non palleted ones have a 50% 50% chance of damage and never ship on legs.
Way too much force on one leg if its tipped. Rips the whole leg assembly out.

Looks like it can be fixed but sucks, these shipping companies are rough as hell.

#24 10 years ago

This is sad, but at least everything can be replaced, even the backbox, and if the shipping company going to pay for that, then consider it as a refurbishment

#25 10 years ago

I'm stressing about this very thing. I have a very expensive pin shipping to me next week. I have received two with legs on no issue and shipped and recieved one on a pallet standing up before. All were recieved without an issue. I specifically asked Michelle at NAVL and she said legs on. They want to lower the head, place blankets inbetween, blanket wrap and place cardboard corners. It was infered that that way, any prior damage could be noted before packing due to the high insurance amount. **crosses fingers and does a sacrifice to the pinball gods**. Please get here safe. Never sweated shipping before until my grail pin was the pin in question; then this post had to show up. Ugh I hope this isn't a premonition...lol

#26 10 years ago

One thing this reminds me is when you get a new pin in you really should check and make sure it has tempered glass. That could have ended really badly for someone.

Is there a way to check and see if the glass is tempered or not? Aside from the obvious smashing it with a hammer approach...

Finally pulled the trigger on a Popeye, did you?

#29 10 years ago

When we closed up shop we threw away tons of glass in the dumpster.

About 20% was not tempered, or not fully tempered.

#31 10 years ago

Holy Crap!! Really sucks! This makes me not want to ship a pin, ever.... Hope you get the money back from the company.

#33 10 years ago

he was 4 hours away and didn't drive over?

#34 10 years ago

Yeahgh! If it's less than a day's drive...

You know what they say! If you want something done right, do it yourself! I don't know about up there, but down here, it wouldn't even be economical to waste the effort to ship a pin 4 hours! I drive that in my sleep!

That seriously blows...thank god that glass WASN'T tempered...

#35 10 years ago

It looks like azpinlawyer's ham-fisted fu(k tard found a new job.

#36 10 years ago

That is a bummer to see that. Feel for both buyer and seller on that deal.

I'm curious what percentage of pins get damaged when shipping via std motor freight trucking companies and/or other type shippers. Is it as high as 5 to 10%?

Damage during loading/transport/unloading by shippers is a big concern for me.
I used my pick-up truck or rent/borrow a van for transporting my pins.
Sometimes you can even make a mini-vacation out of the roadtrip.
I like being in control of the packing/loading/transport/unloading.
Sometimes I pack pillows and blankets around the backbox or cabinet to help prevent vibration rubs & scratches.
So far I haven't messed up yet, including no tickets or accidents, no flat tires, etc.

I realize it is not practical for someone to drive from south Louisiana to Maine or San Diego or Seattle to go pick up a pin. Location of the pin is a big factor to me when considering buying a pin.

Don't let them low-ball you on the compensation.

Tipped on its back, or as I call it "tomb stoning" it with legs off is the proper way to move a pin. Sorry for the damage.

i hope this is not going to take forever for same/worst day to fix this.

Next time hire Larry and his brother Darrell and his other brother Darrell !

No seriously, I feel for you. I just shipped a pin to a guy and it made me a nervous wreck until he received it.

I have a pin coming in next week first time shipping one used NAVL. I asked to talk to Michelle but was told she no longer works there. was surprised at the $400+ shipping charge from NC to phila. they advised legs on blanket wrapped and cardboard corners. I asked seller too screw in leg levelers and add a screw to the back box light board latch so it does not pop open and ruin backglass. and told him to remove the balls and keep them. I was also told by NAVL that if damage occurs they have pinball "specialists" who are familiar with the pinball industry that will asses and will only pay to fix/repair/replace what's damaged. So I assume to get full replacement it would have to vaporize or get clocked by a fright train. Hopefully it arrives in the condition it left the sellers home.I am looking forward to its arrival. And I empathize with your pain and frustration over the damaged pin.Hope the game gets repaired better than it originally was.

Nothing wrong with non tempered glass. People freak out too much about not having it.

On tables, glasses and other open type items its needed for safety but a pinball machine is highly unlikely your going to fall into the machine.

Tempered is better but not something you need to run out for on a pin.

#42 10 years ago

Bummer, TAF is one of my fav's, sad to see it get injured. I agree, 4 hours is a drive not a ship.

Just a side note, If you would have covered the backbox with the cardboard, would have totally prevented that, JK, trying to lighten the mood on this terrible day.

#43 10 years ago

Totally stinks, but at least everything that was damaged can be repaired or replaced. Hope the new owner gets it fixed up right

Touche!

#45 10 years ago

I would have to get a really smokin deal on a pin to consider risking it getting wrecked in shipping. I will never ship one either. I'd hand deliver at cost up to 1000 miles before shipping. No thanks.

Sorry for your loss.

Tempered glass is required to be marked as such. Look at the corners of the glass for etching on that says it is tempered or safety glass.

Bleh thinking about getting a machine shipped to me, cross country here soon.. Scary.

So I've heard the talk to Michele thing.. So who do people talk to now, and what does she specifically do? Obv the ham fisted minimum wage guys that come to your house to pack may have never seen a pinball machine before

Unless it breaks when you are pulling it out and now you need sixteen stitches in each of your palms.

Maybe I'm one of those people, but I think you are foolish if you put plate glass in a pin.
