Thought I would share some pics, as someone who hikes in Alaska almosr weekly. I had a unique experience last week in Talkeetna. The last thing I expected to see floating down the raging Susitna river....a black bear. This river is moving and a person would be in serious trouble if they were in it.

Leaving work early for a dr apt, I took the family out for a hike at Hatcher pass. Beautiful day and the pics never do it justice. This is a shorter hike but well worth it!

Couple weeks ago we hiked the Butte in Palmer. Another short hike that is worth the effort.

This is Eklutna lake close to the parking lot. It was a very windy day. It is normally fairly still.

Beautiful! I never got a chance to head that far west when I lived up in Yellowknife. The scenery in Alaska if so much more beautiful than YK! Bucket list haha

We were lucky enough to go on a trip last year.. amazing, amazing place. I would totally move there. I live in DC now, which is both literally and figuratively a swamp. Gross all around. Alaska was mindblowing

Yes very different but maybe even more beautiful somehow. The sky gets this purple hue on the horizon that fades to pink higher up. Winter is long and the days are very short however.

I will post pics throughout the summer. Always out doing things on the long summer days. You can squeeze 2 days worth of activities when the sun is above the horizon almost 20 hours and even then it's twilight the remaiming hours. One bonus, you can go fishing and tell the wife you will be home by dark, which is pretty much August.

Thanks Tomass for the pictures. My father when he was alive was stationed in Fairbanks before Alaska was a state. He liked it there and my oldest sister was born there (which I call her an alien since it wasn't a state).

The most I have seen of Alaska is watching Gold Rush & Ice Road Truckers when they were there in the state. I could have bought a cabin with a 100 acres on a river but who wants to get up in the morning and be some bears breakfast? Kinda a bad start to the day.

Alaska is incredible. It’s my favorite vacation destination, but of course, getting your perspective as a local is awesome. Thanks for this thread!

Now I’m going to go look through all my Alaska pictures.

All my local hiking trails were literally in clouds so we headed out to find better weather. Blue skies to the south meant we were going through Anchorage. Found an amazing trail on the Seward hiway with great rewards. Views were spectacular and we saw many sheep and had a close encounter with a baby.

Yesterday was absolutely sweltering so it really cut our hike short. Trying to travel the Crow pass trail since snow stopped us short last time. This time it would be the heat. Over 80 degrees yesterday and once above the tree there is almost no chance for shade. That and hiking with a 6 and a 10 year old was our dwon fall. Still got a few nice pics of scenery and saw some bald eagles soaring.

People in the lower 48 are funny. My sister didn't believe me when I told her that I had seen it get up to 100 degrees a few years ago. Is your fire danger up yet or is it to early for that? The way the fires are going on in the lower 48 just go me wondering about Alaska?

Pictures are fantastic! They may not say it now but the kids will come to enjoy the nature and hikes there Tomass . Just wish my dad had lived he liked Alaska and that was one of the states in the running for him to my us kids to when he got his 20 years in the army. Keep posting and you got to love the view.

I worked on the Trans Alaska Pipeline back in '74-'75, specifically on the North Slope. During the summer we would go hiking at midnight. These pictures bring back memories! Basically just tundra up there. Summer seemed like just a couple weeks.

Beautiful country, curious if you carry bear spray ?

#30 5 years ago

Most people I have heard carry a gun. (A large one 357 or bigger for stopping power) Heard a story where a bear had to be killed because it had killed a person. It was found not only with several of the person who killed the bear bullets in it but several 38 cal bullets also. Suspected of killing another person and eating them also, but no body was found.

Bear spray makes then mad and some keep charging until they get you.

Yes, but I prefer to spray hot lead in a .44 caliber size.

Yes the risk was high but we just got some needed rain. So far no major fires this year. Really dry springs and summers usually make for some big fires. I know people who lost everything a couple years back in Willow when a fire came through.

North Slope gets a lot shorter summers than I do here. June thru sept are usually very comfortable. Last week was a fluke. Usually we run in the 60's, so with the sun out, it's perfect. Anything over 70 and Alaskan's are complaining and using the scorcher. I think it is usually justified since the sun is usually blazing if it hits 70, and the radiant heat makes a big difference.

I've lived in Seattle most of my life which is a pretty mild climate. I flew into Prudhoe Bay in February. 24 hour darkness of course, but the temp was 59 below zero with a chill factor of 95 below....was like being on another planet!

Ya, that's cold. We get to about 25 below on occaision. Your breath moisture freezes in your nose and it feels strange. Like sticky.

One of the things I do not regret in life was taking a "month off" during my last year of veterinary school to help a good friend drive/move to Alaska. We left Ohio in late June and took our time driving the Alaska Highway thru Canada all the way to Fairbanks. A lot of beautiful scenery along the way -- I remember taking a dip in hot springs, seeing all kinds of wildlife, and really having the road to ourselves most of the time. We dedicated a week to driving into Wrangell St. Elias National Park -- if you have not been there I'd highly recommend visiting the copper mining town/buildings of Kennecot -- the National Park Service was restoring the buildings when we were there and I imagine they've come along way by now. You could hike right up to and touch Kennecot Glacier. . . daylight thru midnight sure was a different experience. All of my pictures are still on film, but there are plenty of pictures of the mine buildings on the web.

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

I flew back home. . . but would make the drive again if the opportunity presented.

Foxes are the best! We have red foxes all over the place where I live. They often hang out in my back yard, I think it's a relatively safe place because they are surrounded by trees on all sides (protection) and they can get up on higher things for a good defensive view. They're cute little boogers, a little too friendly for their own good though.

Here's one taking a sip of rainwater from a clam shell on my picnic table.

I'm visiting in-laws in Alaska now. We've been very busy. We did some hiking around Hatcher's Pass, sea kayaking in Prince William Sound, mountain biking around Eklutna Lake, halibut fishing in Homer, and generally helping clean up around the in-law's property - particularly downing several large dead trees. We've seen a lot of wild life including two black bears and lots of eagles and moose. Alaska is awesome!

Well I officially want to go check out Alaska now.

What's the water like for kayaking? Does it warm up in summer, or are you going to freeze if you upset your kayak?

It’s fine for kayaking. Maybe 45 degrees Fahrenheit water temp - pretty cold. Kayaks have a skirt to keep water out. Sun and work out keeps you warm. If you have a dry suit, you can jump in comfortably.

We were at Hatcher Pass and had to search hard to find a spot away from everyone. We started a hike and not very far in, we ran across a grizzly. He was moving quickly away from us, probably heard my girls. We are usually bear aware and make noise. After he ran he went across the valley and was kinda walking parallel with us. We were working back to the jeep out of precaution. My wife took a video as he came down the valley past us. A passerby was nice enough to share a good picture from a high end camera.

Sharing pics from a hunting trip. Although I did not harvest anything on this outing, it was an amazing experience. We spent 9 days in the bush. The only hard part was getting out of bed (cot) when the temp was below freezing.
