You can see the magpie in the first pic.
You have a good heart @tomass! I hope everything goes well with your owl. How did the kids respond when you brought it home?
Is it eating what you feed it? And what do baby owls eat? Earthworms and insects?

Thanks guys. It was very tired last night so I let it rest. This morning I got it to eat some ground meat. I pureed some with water and warmed it to body temp and used a dropper. Not sure how much to give it though. He is a tiny little thing, but has some sharp talons.

I think it says "more ground meat"!
Damn it's a cute little owl.
Quoted from hlaj78:There is at least one bird of prey rescue in Alaska. It was on Discovery Channel not too long ago.
I will be checking that out. I don't want to get in trouble if they are protected (not sure), so I have no intention of keeping it. Not sure if any are available today or if I need to keep it safe till next week. Labor day weekend to boot.
Quoted from newpinbin:Great phots. Post some more of Alaska.
Thanks. I will be posting up some pics in a couple weeks after my moose hunt. I have a 10 day hunt planned starting next saturday. Sounds like it might be a cold one this year. They already had a snowfall where I go.
I wish I lived in alaska. Denali was incredible. I like anchorage too. Fairbanks.. not so much.. nothing there.

Yeah Fairbanks is too hot in summer and really cold in the winter.

I don't go to FBX unless I need to. You are right, there is really nothing exciting including sight seeing. There is North Pole if you had kids with you or Chena hot springs. Neither impress me though.
Quoted from newpinbin:Snow already?
That's about 1 1/2 to 2 hours north of me. We have termination dust on the mountains though. I will be leaving tomorrow to spend 9 days where that snow was.
Quoted from zaki:Are there many places to play pinball in alaska?
There are a couple places in Anchorage but I only go into the city for work mostly.
Quoted from mtn-:Looking forward to pictures of a successful hunt!
Man I hope so. Took all day tying up loose ends. I am packed and ready to roll but at this point I think I will leave before dawn tomorrow. Then I can hunt the trail all the way back to our camp for the morning hunt. My buddy has had the camp covered for a week now. Plus I really don't want to pitch my tent in the dark.
Looks like it is going to be a cold one for sure. We had frost the last couple mornings here, and it is always colder up there.
Just reading your post about the owl. I don't think it's a baby. Looks like a Saw Whet owl? They are small.
Quoted from mtn-:So, tomass, hows the hunt? Knock on wood etc.
Well, I am home now and not with a moose. Oh well. My buddy had been in for a week by the time I got there. He was wiped out and ready to go.
Also starting to realize my age. After spending a week sleeping on a mat, I can barely move. Saw lots of cows and a few bulls, but nothing legal. I got stuck on the way in and was completely covered in mud getting out. Lol. Then my phone charger broke so no way to communicate. I took a couple pics before it died at least. All in all, had a great time. I need to get a better sleeping setup for next year.

Yeah, you are correct. I thought it was too late in the year for a baby, but a few people up here insisted it was a baby. The rescue confirmed it was an adult norther saw whet.
Sea to Summet comfort plus pad.
I got an ultralight for backpacking while at college for natural resources, and love it to this very day.
The first night I used it at home (to test it out on a hardwood floor), my crazy cat kamakazeed into it, nails fully deployed. Damn thing never popped.
Use it all the time for truck camping on rough surfaces, never had an issue over three years of ownership.
I'm in my mid twenties, so I fully realize my spine may bounce back easier than yours.
As long as the extra weight isn't a concern, I'd think the extra cushioning on the comfort plus model would serve you well. It would still be mobile enough to day hike from camp during a hunting trip.
They are expensive at $200, but they are one hell of a life investment to enjoy your dream trips to the fullest.
If I remember right, sea to summit has a trial period with full cash refund if not happy in their product.
P.S: Not a paid advertisement

I think I am just too old for any tent camping. Lol

Thanks! Whisper has been doing great. She is more loving than ever too. I really hope she knows not to chase cars now.
Quoted from cdnpinbacon:Hey Tomass, hope all is well with you and your family!
Cheers
Darrin
Thanks man. Yeah all is well. Already had a few days of below zero so winter is kicking in hard. Had both vehicles go down on me. Sux working on a car in normal conditions but so much worse in freezing temps.

Any photos? Always like when you post them.
Quoted from zr11990:Is your dog still doing well?
I hope so. Whisper. What a Great Name.
Hope owl and puppy are doing good.
Sorry, been busy with life.
Whisper is fully back to normal, so thank God for that!
The owl ended up in Anchorage and is still alive!
I will look into taking some more pics. It is our dark period now though. Doesn't get light until 10ish and dark again about 4:30.
Just celebrated my 47th birthday yesterday. Nice quiet day with the family. Was nice.
Quoted from zr11990:I’m thinking that owl wasn’t a baby, just a tiny owl like The owl in Harry Potter. A screech owl.
Correct. It was a fully grown Norther Saw Whet.
Cute little dude. We have a Hoot Owl that lives near our house. We can hear him at night. I have seen him twice. It’s amazing that they are totally safe lent when they fly.
You live in an amazing place. I love the pics. I also love the baby moose

Happy birthday! I hope you had elk steak for dinner!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Sky looks amazing this morning. Pics don't do it justice.
Whisper was not too happy about a moose in the field.
