Always enjoy your Alaska pics!

Thank you guys so much! You have no idea how much it means to me. You guys are all friends I have never met in person. Maybe someday some of us will cross paths. We talked to the vet and she is doing ok after a second surgery. It almost feels like a family member got hurt. We are trying to go see her and hoping she comes home tomorrow.

What's your dog's name?My condolences and hope for a speedy recovery.

Thank you! Her name is whisper. We are about to leave right now to go see her. Hoping it brings her spirits up.

Hoping to hear some good news on your Whisper...

Still not home but things are looking up. She is out of the oxygen tank and no more air building up in the chest. This means her lung is healing. She was walking good and ate some food today. One more xray and if things are good she can come home. Supposed to hear something real soon.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers! I will post some pics as soon as she gets home.

#313 1 year ago

Supposed to pick her up around 8pm! Everyone really misses her.

#314 1 year ago

She's home! Really loopy from meds but good to have her back.

Glad to hear. Her whole world got messed up and she wasn't home either. Must have been really upsetting. She didn't know what she did.

Best wishes going forward for her.

Damn. Reading the last 22 posts was a roller coaster of emotions.

Im very glad little Whisper got out of this alive. Otto sends his regards.

#317 1 year ago

This was my first time seeing your Alaska posts/photos. The photos are amazing! Just came to the part about your dog. Sorry to read what occurred to her. Very sad that even in Alaska people don't stop after hitting an animal. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

#318 1 year ago

Lookin' good!

#319 1 year ago

Whisper is such a beautiful name.

So glad to see she made it home.

Hope it wont be long before she's ready to get back out on her next trip!

#320 1 year ago

Awesome news! So glad she is back home with you and can recover quickly.

#321 1 year ago

Thanks for everyone's concerns. So glad to have her spend the night home finally. She does not like wearing the cone on her head, but she is doing as good as I could expect. Now we need to keep her inactive for 10 days, so that is our next challenge.

#322 1 year ago

Some things never change. As soon as someone starts cooking, she heads into the kitchen and parks. You never know what treasures may fall onto the floor.

Yes she is! My brother thinks I am insane after hearing about the vet bill, but how can you put a price on a life? How could I look at my kids and tell them it was too much? How could I look in the mirror knowing I could have saved her?

No doubt in our minds and doing the unthinkable was never an option and we never even considered it.

#325 1 year ago

She's worth it.

#326 1 year ago

I would have sold a few pins if it came down to that. That says it all right there.

Prayers for your pup.

#328 1 year ago
Quoted from Tomass:

but how can you put a price on a life?

You can't. And you have a pet, you are responsible for it.

I wouldn't draw the line on money. No matter what I had to sell or do.

I would look at what are the results. Is there a chance this will improve the quality of their life and extend it. Or are you torturing an animal for no benefit.

A couple dogs ago I had an 18 year old dog come up with an inoperable brain tumor. Surgery or steroids. I talked to an expert at the U of M, and to a veterinarian friend. I asked the expert ignoring risk, age, complications, would I give her another week, a month, a year ? assuming all went well. She said two days max. I'm not torturing and animal for two days. My friend told me if it was a young dog, he wouldn't do it. Their skulls are thicker than ours are and they bust them up pretty bad going in. I went with the steroids. And gave her another 5 months or so. Until we had to go on that long ride to the vet.

Man, that sucks. I completely agree. Can't let them suffer, but if you can improve their life and give them a chance to live, you have to do it. Material things mean nothing. I wouldn't let her suffer though. She seemed like she was hurt, but fighting to live. She wanted to live, you could just tell. Now she seems completely herself, just hurting from surgery.

Sorry you had to deal with that Lloyd. You are a well respected pinsider and we are all fortunate to have you here. I always enjoy your posts, perhaps someday we will meet and I can shake your hand. Thanks for all that you do for the hobby and Pinside!

Thank you. I hope we can meet one day.

That was a tough day when it started. Christmas day. People are all over doing Christmas stuff. I'm going from E Vet to E Vet then to the U of M. Thought she died once along the way.

After that the steroids helped a lot, until they didn't.

Finally caught up on this thread. Wow. Roller coaster indeed. So happy to see Whisper is back home and recovering. Alaska has a special place in my heart, and now she does too.

#332 1 year ago

Whisper is healing well. She is quickly returning to her old self and is improving every day. I will say, she does not like it when we put the cone on her and makes it known. It is usually off since we are with her all dat, but we put it on overnight. She intentionally will keep banging it on us in the morning until we pull it off. Like she can't get through, but even if we move, she will move too and bang it off our legs. So glad to see our dog returning to her normal self.

I'm thrilled for you to get these positive updates. Sounds like she is certainly out of the woods!

I sure hope so! She was coughing yesterday so we took her back in. They think her drain tubes were causing it so they removed them. They said ger lungs sounded really good when they checked her out.

So, how is Whisper doing?

#336 1 year ago
Quoted from mtn-:

So, how is Whisper doing?

Thanks for asking! She is doing very well. Wounds look good and she goes back to the vet Tuesday to remove the staples. She wants to run around and play, but we are still keeping her as calm as possible with the lung injury. She also seems more affectionate now. Like she is happy to be alive and with her family.

Enjoy your pictures of Alaska very much, but the recovery of Whisper is even better!

Tried to do a caribou hunt again this weekend without success. Our trails are still washed out and impossible to cross a few places. We tried to get back in through an unfamiliar trail that my buddy's friend suggested, but that did not work out. We spent all day getting to a crossing that was too deep and the bottom was just silty muck. My friend got stuck in his can am side-by-side and we couldn't get through. Just getting back to our vehicles turned into a winch fest.
I am off mon and tues though, so I am trying to go drive the Denali Hwy again to see what I can find.

Good to hear! And yeah, I know all about how hard it is to try to keep a injured dog calm. About a year ago, my little Boston Terrier got diagnosed with struvites in his urine bladder, and had a rather big operation to remove them. In his terrier-mind though, he thought he was 110% two days after surgery. Hehe

What a difference 2 1/2 months make! First pic is early June. We dug up 12 strawberry starts from a friends house. Some barely had any roots at all. I was hoping that half would survive.
Well less than 3 months in and it's a jungle in there. Tons are rooting into the surrounding area. Some are just plants growing in the air. I imagine this type of growth is due to our many hours of sunlight everyday. No berries this year, but should be set for a nice garden for next year.

Well Whisper got the staples removed and she seems to be back to normal. She has been extra clingy, especially with me. She follows me around everywhere and waits by the door if I go into a room. She will also just hang out for hours in my pinball shed.

Well I tried one last caribou hunt before moose season hits, and once again it was bound for failure. For those keeping score: 3 weekends ago was terrible and almost lost my dog; 2 weekends ago we were still unable to cross a creek and get to where we needed to be; and now this weekend it was a gas situation. I always fill up when I can due to the distance between spots. Last place to get gas before the Denali is cantwell, but before that is Talkeetna or Trapper Creek, but I always fill at Talkeetna and Cantwell. Well this time the station in Cantwell was no card, cash only due to internet problems. Got stuck going about 40 miles down the Denali and camped so I could make it back to gas.
Would say it was a failure, but my youngest came along, so it was a great camping trip if nothing else.

Not sure yet. I hear there may be a rescue in Anchorage. I am trying to care for it until I get it to someone who can raise it. It is a tiny little thing. I'm not sure if he will be able to go back to the wild or not since it is so young. Maybe the zoo?
