Quoted from Grayman_EM:

Any snow yet my mother did tell me that the snow would always start in September when she lived there in the 50's.

They are big legs just like the ones I see sometimes on Deadliest Catch.

There has been some snow farther north. Where I am at it always snows before Halloween.
There is termination dust on the mountains here though.

Mostly 40s and 50s right now.

Winter is descending. Won't be long now.

Thanks. It's been kinda crappy weather since late July. I need to enjoy the last few days before the show starts flying. Although they say it may snow this weekend.

Quoted from Tomass:

We were joking and saying people usually say "I had crab legs for dinner", but up here you say "I had crab leg for dinner".

I have always been shocked at the price of king crab up there, even at the dock in Homer. And Seward. Got good buys on jumbo scallops, but king crab never found them und 30 a pound.

#808 1 year ago

Well it's snowing. Coming down heavy too.

That brings back some memories....Was up there working on the Trans Alaska Pipeline...Atigun Pass was as far south as I got. Gull Island (Middle of Prudhoe Bay) was as far north as I got.

I took a "dip" at the east dock.

Took my girls to Anchorage to ice skate. They made the ice pink for October so figured it would be cool for them.

It's even better live. It moves and "dances" so to speak. It's breath taking when when you see a really good one. Sometimes it's just be a single pillar or streak but other times it's a complete light show. It can go on for a long time too but it can disappear just as fast as it starts.

Does it look the same in person as the photos of this?

Agreed. I've seen them fill the whole sky and I swear you could hear them!

Unreal that Crab season was cancelled this year for the first time in AK history! Man I love AK and need to plan a trip back. I feel lucky t live in Santa Barbara but AK is so beautiful!

As others have said, the pics don't do it justice. It's much better live but the pics are a good representation of the colors and typical patterns. Sometimes they can be fairly static but other times very active as they move about. It's something everyone should try to see at least once in a lifetime.

#824 1 year ago

seeing the aurora in person is amazing. part of your brain is like, "it's cool," and the other part, "that can't be real!"
thank for the pics. your pics were better than what I typically got to see when I lived in AK!

Out of curiosity, where did you live in AK? I'm going to guess Fairbanks?

Or where you just referring to the Aurora pics?

#826 1 year ago

I lived in Anchorage. 3 years. We took trips throughout the Kenai, and Fairbanks, too, all points in between. Was speaking about your aurora pics. We did go out chasing aurora "warnings" in the middle of the night for the fun of it, but the huge ones always eluded me!

Gotcha. Yeah, mostly they are like the one pic I posted of just a light haze or a single swoosh or pillar...but man when you see an amazing show it's just breathtaking. In 10 years I have caught maybe 3 like that. I am usually in bed fairly early though and miss most of them. Fairbanks gets them more frequently than here.

You do have some EM's to get you through the dark.

Definitely! Pinball keeps me sane over the winter.

Have you had the opportunity to see the space station when it passes by at night?

Didn't know that was a thing. Now I am curious.

Just put in your city and it will tell you the exact time when it will pass by. It is very easy to see.

#842 12 months ago

I think I would have had a better chance seeing the one that just passed at 5:07 pm. Would be dark at that time, but it may be dark enough at 9:07 am when the next one comes. I think sunrise is about 10:30.

It is very accurate. Try for the one on 12/19.

Use this website to see the direction where it will appear and disappear from.

The sky may be starting to get light. Hope it's visible then. I think sunrise is 1030 so not sure.

The times when the "Max Height" is around 70 - 80 is when it will be directly over you.

What does it look like? Does it look like a satellite or is it something more?

#849 12 months ago

We had the largest single snowfall in 20 years this week. 24" recorded in Anchorage. They are calling for 8-12 more this weekend.

#850 12 months ago
Quoted from Tomass:

Similar to a satellite but brighter and visibility lasts longer. I have seen it many times and still enjoy when it comes by my location. It travels at 17,150 miles per hour.
