I have also been looking for new side art decals and was trying to find a reasonably priced ceramic ball for the captive egg shot. I haven't found either yet, but I'll keep looking. O
Over the weekend, I decided to go one step further and add some inner art, as the black insides just weren't cutting it. I had purchased a set of jungle themed inner art for my Congo, but the more I looked at it, the more I realized that the style and look of it were better suited for my JP. I decided to install it on Saturday, and man am I happy I did. It absolutely dressed the machine up with some color and gave the playfield a much needed three dimensional feel.

Quoted from blondetall:I like the side art quite a bit. My playfield seems to rub on its own so don't know if I'd have room for any without having to take it out every time.
Well technically, I installed this stuff with the playfield still in. I tilted it all the way back to nearly vertical, got the inner art taped in place from the front to back, then peeled and cut the backing from the front to about the center of the decal, then laid the front half of it down. I then removed another section of backing from the center and laid the art from the center to just past where the playfield was tilted up. I pivoted the playfield back down and finished smoothing the art from where I stopped to the back, having to trim only a very small corner of the back on either side to clear the blocks for the backbox. Seems to be about 3/32 of an inch of clearance on either side of my playfield so I can lift it without it rubbing the art.
I love your lighting mods, that is what's next for me.
Quoted from blondetall:I know some people with the side mirrors say they have to take the mirrors off before they lift the playfield or it will rub. I'm afraid I'd be in the same boat with art or decals of any kind, because my playfield scrapes both sides every single time I lift it. I've looked and can't find anything abnormal, it's just apparently a tight fit.
Well this stuff is adhesive backed, so removing it would not be an option. I thought the blades were adhesive backed as well?
could always put little felt like stickers on the playfield on the front and back sides, to keep it evenly spaced, as well has softly rub against the sides.
That's what the guy that sold it to me said as well, I may still do that, but currently I am having no rubbing issues. I still can't believe that this:
was designed for Congo. Other than the sunset colors, it looks nothing like the style of the background art behind the playfield:
Lotta purples, grays and greens and a lot of detail in the original Congo art. The inner art is just black silhouettes.
Quoted from Chitownpinball:Cant wait to see if they actually come out with an updated Trex head.
Even re-airbrushing the original and adding teeth would be an improvement.
Quoted from RussMyers:Phet, you have got to replace the factory Pteranodons. They just look like lumps of Play-Doh.
RM
Russ, the wingspans look to be about 8 feet on those things. How do you see the playfield?
Quoted from jeffsgames:Phet, I love the inner side art! Nice job and thanks for the tip.
Thanks brotha. I am really happy I decided to put this stuff in my JP, looks so much better than it would have in Congo.
Quoted from accidental:I designed these scoop light icons. They'll be available for sale this week, PM me if you want me to notify you
I also designed some nice black apron insert cards and I've added some palm trees.
Well, how much will the icons cost? Like the palm trees too, I'll have to go down to the hobby shop and grab some of those.
Anybody ever make an alt translite for JP? Don't think I've ever seen one, but I'd love to see less people, more dinos. The original isn't really that bad though. I like the T-rex against the sunset, and at least you can tell who the characters are supposed to be, unlike the playfield.
Well I got 2 mods done over the long weekend. First up, I got my Danger Side Rails done. I was gonna have these done in powdercoat, but I already had color matched enamel paint, so I painted them myself. These were my original, beat side rails. I figured I had nothing to lose by experimenting on them, as if it didn't work quite right, at least I'd have a good pattern for the powdercoaters to emulate. Well, it did work. I sanded, primed and painted them caution yellow (2 coats primer, 3 coats yellow, sanding lightly between coats). I then let the last yellow coat cure for 48-60 hours (16 of which were in front of my fireplace) before using 1/4" and 3/4" green masking tape to create the diagonal caution lines. After laying down the tape, I burnished it all with a soft cloth to make sure the edges were tight. I then sprayed one coat of double strength primer, then 2 coats satin black within an hour of the primer coat. I immediately peeled the tape, to prevent tearing the paint later on. I then let the paint cure for 48 hours (again, 16 of which were in front of my fireplace). When it had cured, I gave the whole rail a light sanding, removing the ridge lines and any fuzzy edges. I then hit the whole rail with 3 coats satin clear. I let that cure 24 hours before installing the rails. They turned out exactly as I had envisioned them. I have stenciled a ton of arcade cabinets, so I guess that skill came in handy here. Pics:
Heat curing. One with base coat, one with stencil finished:
One rail ready to be installed:
Installed with hardware and new red button in place:
Quoted from CaptainNeo:love the side rails. Really makes JP stand out from the other games. Nicely done. Nice to see some DE getting some major loving.
Thanks man. Yeah, they add a lot to the visual appeal. Now I need to get the full decal kit to complete this machine. I wish someone made stencils, but a decal will be easier.
Quoted from blondetall:I think it looks good. I've thought about doing the light strip before too, but never have gotten around to it. Is it wired in somehow or does it run seperate?
Right now it's just plugged into the service outlet. It has a separate on/off switch. I will be hardwiring it to the 12V line at some point, or at the very least, rewiring the service outlet to the power switch and just keeping the adapter plugged in. It's pretty simple to do, but for now, this was easier.
Quoted from accidental:Nice work phetishboy! Looks awesome. You've paid lots of attention to the cabinet, now you need to complete the playfield by adding some trees, a raptor and the LoopCombo.com scoop light mod to really complete the look, haha.
I agree. One thing at a time though. I need to decal this cab or stencil it before I do much else. All these nice mods added to a semi-beat cabinet are starting to make me recite the old saying 'Lipstick on a pig" more and more in my head.
Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:Yellow powder coating, black striped rails, inside cabinet decals and light bar look great and very professionally done.
Thanks. I am pretty happy with the results so far. Would love to find a topper.
Quoted from ScottoKong:I've just picked up a JP.
I think I'll have a look at some powdercoating while I get it up and running.
Just wondering if anyone has seen or had a crack at powdercoating the ball launch gun?
Would appreciate a pic if anyone has.
Cheers
Scotto
I have been debating this for a while now. I think I'd like to enhance the pistol grip panels somehow, while leaving the JP and the rest of the gun black.
I am most interested in this one:
and led backlit backround. -Barry
When I pulled my playfield and looked, it was attached to a huge piece of black plywood. Did you remove, replace or route that piece to achieve this effect? Or did you just add spacers for the led strips to fit in? I assume EL panels would work well here, but they are expansive as hell.
Quoted from Chitownpinball:i like the side rails, but i think the lock down bar and legs would look better in red....would that be too much? im a two-tone type of guy.
Nah, I don't think it would be too much. Tell you the truth, I'd like it either way (that's why I added the red buttons).
I'm not a 'one way is best' kinda guy. I realize a lot of this is trial and error, and you'll never really know how things are gonna look until you take the plunge and just go for it. I just happened to choose yellow, so I'm gonna stick with it.
Quoted from jeffsgames:Phet those siderails are AMAZING! I love how you left yellow for a border also. Very nice touch! Really makes it stand out. These really bring the machine together well.
Thanks brotha. The border was achieved by laying 1/4" masking tape down around the edges before doing the diagonal stripes. This was exactly how I assumed the heat tape would have to be applied if doing this design in powder coat. I just wanted to try it on my own as I didn't want to wait another month to install my side rails. Glad I just went ahead and did it.
Quoted from bflagg:I wish I had taken pics. I removed the wood piece which is 3/8 thick. I had a local plastics shop cut a piece of 1/4 inch plex the exact same size. I sanded the front side with my orbital sander to give it a frosted sheen. I then routed out the bottom about an inch and drilled small holes up into the bottom edge. I glued in 32 LEDs and wired them up so they shine vertically lighting up the front panel. To get the 3/8 thickness I use 1/8" abs plastic sheet. For all the holes to mount the background and ramp bracket. I drilled holes all the way through and used t-nuts on the back with short #6 machine screws.
I tried el panel and I didn't like it
Whoa, that sounds like a bitch. Looks cool as hell though.
Mini mod time. Got my raptor in place and added some greenery.
Fern:

Of course I'll now have to paint the screw and washer green to match, but that's no big deal. I really need another one of these for the other side, so if you have one or know where I can get one, LMK.
Raptor and Palm Tree:
// Error: Image 57884 not found // DSC02434.jpg // Error: Image 57885 not found // DSC02436.jpg DSC02438.jpg
And lit up:
I had a Triceratops to add, but I'll need to grab one a bit smaller, as the one I have is just a few millimeters too big to fit in the back right corner where I had planned to put him. Oh well, I'll find one the right size at some point.
Quoted from oopsallberrys:Looks good Phetishboy, any idea where to get that inner side art from? I know you got it from a pinsider for your Congo but can't find it anywhere to buy.
Thanks. Nope, no idea where to get it any more, so I am gonna recreate the art in illustrator, correct the gradients and blacks (both are a bit muted on mine) add a few dino silhouettes and a few more palm trees and have a few sets printed and laminated. I will then start a FS thread in marketplace when I am ready to sell them. Price will be in the $85 shipped per set range if I can keep the printing costs down. It'll be a few weeks/months, but I am confident that it WILL happen.
Quoted from blondetall:His name is Snack, and I think he is adorable. He looks way too happy about being that close to Chompy the Rex though. Plus my raptor is sneaking in on him. It is just the goat with a necklace chain reworked into a collar/chain/bell, and the chain stand is a piece of solder wire. Everything can come out in 5 seconds flat, but for now he is going to hang out because I like him.
That kicks ass. I love it.
