Hey everyone. Nabbed a nice shaq attaq from a local arcade. Bought a new dome and installed it recently, and also polished up all the metals with 0000 steel wool. I use these on guitar frets occasionally, and they work great... just lots of dust you gotta watch out for.

QUESTIONS:

1. Knocker. It came with one, but it doesn’t work. Tried testing it in the service mode but no luck. It looks like it’s wired up okay.... I think?

2. Vari-target. It’s stuck it registers hits, but it doesn’t move in or out of its cave.

3. Volume. How do you adjust this thing?

As many of you have already said, this game is super underrated. Happy to be part of this club. We can all say we were here first, when in 5-10 years, our tables will be going for $7k

For volume, where it says volume in that picture, there should be a small twist knob. Looks like yours is broken off.

I have a vari target issue as well, doesn't register/reset ,mine is going in to get shopped soon anyways.

Ahh, that’ll do it I’m guessing I could use a small screwdriver to adjust it?

Please report back here on how you make out with the vari target issue. I’d love to get mine fixed eventually.

Anyone have an extra playfield for Shaq Attaq that you would want to sell?

Trying to do some touch up painting on Shaq Attaq. Anybody had any luck matching the hardwood floor color and the blue on the playfield?

Just got a nice shaq attaq. The motor to move the basketball hoop isnt working. Relay kicks in and come to find out that its missing the wiring entirely from the motor. Anyone have a picture of what color wire goes where on the motor?

Yo! The pics you provided are for the spinner. If you see mine are for the hoop motor. Its much lower on the playfield. When you have a chance id love to see your wiring.

Thanks! Looks like motor was disconnected because it can be pretty loud but it works. Did a full LED swap and happy with the results.

One of the inner threads for the leg bolts is completely stripped. Anyone know where i can find the inner leg bracket replacement?

I’m just servicing my second only shaq which was neglected for years, fun machine and looking good now a few issues I’m hoping someone can help. I’m much more familiar with Bally Williams.
1 is free play only possible when switched to tournament mode.
2 in play mode, is the centre yellow switch supposed to activate-drop the back drop targets?? This is what this one does ,seems odd but is that a feature?
3 I’m sure this one is a fault. In multi-ball, if a ball goes into either up kicker, it just sits there until multiballs drain then pops it out of either up kicker after the period of doing a ball search. Problem is a second ball could sit beside a ball already in the up kicker so that’s just not right.
In normal game the upkickers work perfectly. I tested them in switch test cleaned spade connectors, the micro switches themselves seem fine out of circuit, This definitely only happens in multiball but I haven’t played it too much yet, just testing all features with the glass off.
Hoping someone here has an idea on this strange one.

On # 1 - yes, has to be in tournament mode for free play.

What is a really nice Shaq going for this week? I may have to make room for a CC. Mine has zero issues.

Just picked up a Shaq Attack. It’s actually in really nice shape but a few issues I fear are damn near unobtainable. Anywhere I can find a new hoop motor or at least some parts for it? Motor is weak and the gears are stripped.

Also. The cam for the vari target assembly is broken in half.

Anywhere these are available?

Found the 7 year old Shaq club and missed this one. Does anyone have a spare Shaq Ramp? I just bought a reimport that’s missing the ramp and the VUK over the ramp. Even if someone has a broken, trashed ramp, I’d take it. The game works 100% aside from the missing ramp and a bad DMD

Anybody here have a guess as to why my varitarget and knocker both don’t work? I ended up replacing the knocker, still no luck, and I have a new vari target solenoid, but I hesitate to solder it in, in case the same problem affecting the knocker is affecting the vari target. I assumed it would be a shared fuse, but all of them look good.

Vari target stays in the back of its hole, and doesn’t reset back to the front. Still registers breaking the backboard just fine.

Is it just not resetting? What exactly is the issue with it? Those vari-targets are very temperamental. They are supposed to be set a lot looser than people think.

It looks simple enough but for some reason I'm thinking theres a trap somewhere.
Want to put a new net on, and not sure if I can remove the whole backboard where the springs are, or have to find something really small to undo the tiny bolts in between the two.

First you remove the two locknuts that hold on the backboard and remove that. then you can remove the two small nuts for the hoop.

I have had my Shaq Attack for years now and finally am giving it the attention it deserves in terms of learning the rules .

I’m also thinking of mods I would like to consider:
1) Alternate translite:

2) Remove or reduce the basket shield.
I really find the big dome gets in the way visually to everything in the upper playfield. Any thoughts about this? I'm sure it's to prevent the ball from breaking the glass when going for a hoop shot, but wonder if there is something more streamlined that could be used?

3) Art blades
@kingvidiot: Those Art blades look nice. How much did they run you?

I think the dome is more so to keep the ball from launching to the back of the machine and getting stuck/breaking plastics. Don’t think there’s really a better option for it. Personally I like the cheesy ness of the original art but to each their own… the art blades are indeed sick. Would also like to know more about those. I just put my shaq on location but when I eventually take it back and clean it up again I’ll for sure want a set of them. Love shaq ataq. Most under rated pinball machine of all time in my opinion.

Wow, I’ve had this game for a few months now and I’m *finally* getting it.

The rules are insane. There is so much depth to this goofy System 3 and the 5th to last game made by Gottlieb before they closed their doors. Considering Gottlieb was beleaguered by financial disarray, I’m amazed at what they’ve put into it. A lot of game beyond just a cool moving hoop! Jon Norris is incredibly talented.

Having an issue with the ball getting stuck in the hoop increasing often. We play this in league often. Any suggestions? I’ve loosened the nuts quite a bit. It seems like any looser and the backboard won’t register a “reject”. They have no guidance on how tight it should be.

This is a good game indeed. Got a bad rap early on and then nobody would ever give it a try.

I've owned mine for years and have never gotten a ball stuck in the basket. I would suspect something is misassembled.

My third pin project makes me a recent addition to this particular club.
My machine appears to have been played quite a lot and not maintained very well- although not really abused at least.
Overall in fairly decent shape but needs at least most/all the grounds repinned and some work on the main board to begin with.
Look forward to playing it someday!
Seeing all these nice examples makes me envious though.
Playfield on mine is soooo yellowed and is checking in spots that aren't mylar covered.
If anyone knows of a playfield available please let me know.
Would be nice to completely restore this one.

Shaq is awesome! I considered getting a new playfield for mine too, but truthfully, the game isn’t worth a lot and it’s good enough for me, I left it alone.

Playfield can be restored if you good. And plastics 2 if them are broken. If i dont sell it ill oart it out. (Probably more money. )
