This isn’t necessarily a restoration thread although I’m restoring some of this machine. But more of a depository for before and after pics and for me to throw some questions out around bringing my first EM (with flippers)up to par.

I got a partially working Shangri-La for a fare price in April but it needs quite a bit of work.

The playfield has quite a bit of wear and some scratches. And the left side of plastics are a mess. Been hunting for them pretty aggressively.

Currently the game is on free play and all the switches, wiring and mechs are missing from the door. I was able to pick up a replacement door in Allentown during pinfest so I’ll rebuild/rewire a door.

Pulled the playfield and mech board to start cleaning. This project has finally pushed me to build a rotisserie. The playfield and shooter lane is pretty filthy.

For the moment all I’m going to do is clean this the best I can. The flippers need rebuilt and rewired. Major mess down there. Also going to add new plastic for the pop bumpers. I’m surprised these pieces came out without snapping on me.

The playfield cleaned up really nice minus the flipper area and the heavy scratches. I actually like the beat up look of it. Even though I’d rather paint it and clear it to look like new, this antique feel is growing on me.
Some of these pics just show the difference after cleaning because I did it in portions.

After cleaning the posts and plastics, putting on new rubbers and new pop bumpers, I’m starting to see a nice looking game. Well half of it anyway due to plastics.

Made new instruction cards and a new manufacturers label. I came across an apron decal in Allentown so I sanded down the apron and painted it. Looks pretty sweet.

Also painted the under side of the arch to help reflect the lights.

Under the playfield the relay bank had several bent switches, the stacks of switches on the score motor were bent all out of whack and because of the shape of the PF I’m guessing someone dropped this PF into the cabinet. Made some adjustments on the mech board and cleaned up the steppers. Found a burnt up coil in the relays. So glad Marcos has a replacement.

I love the backglass on this game. It’s in pretty good condition. Only one little spot of flaking. I’m going to clear the back and touch up the paint.

Spoiler: I screwed up this back glass

Quoted from AlexF:

Looks real nice. I wonder if the original cabinet paint is hiding under the white?

I’m torn on if I should strip the paint to see or just repaint it. Ive been making stencils for another project so that’s been influencing me to go the new paint route with this one.

I think the big thing I’m gonna tackle (for me anyway) is rewiring a coin door. Thanks to Rolf I have this awesome diagram to help me out!

This is what happens. Crack a beer, start unscrewing one piece, then another, then another.....
This used to be a coin door.
I guess I’ll soak all this in evaporust and do a proper door restoration. Haha all I wanted to do was rewire this thing

rolf_martin_062 I’m using your instructions to rewire my door. However I’m thinking there are some differences. I’m not sure our switches are the same or if mine are fully intact. The one switch on the lock side has 2 pads for soldering and the one on the hinge side has 3 pads. Also I notice that I have coil on mine that pulls a bar to allow coins to pass through the mechs. Any thoughts?

Well if this game doesn’t have the lock out feature I’ll just bend the hinge so it holds the plate in.

Outside of the coin lock out issue everything else works! I dropped it in to test and all is operational. Just need to find a Jones plug.

Quoted from rolf_martin_062:

Hi mrm_4
the following writing is written not knowing post-20 and post-21.
It will be by tomorrow when I will write again --- (a little joke) maybe You do not find the drawing of Coin-Lockout-Coil in Your schematics and You say "want to have all original so I (You) do not wire the coin lockout coil - I (You) maybe take away the coil".
(((Everything else we may do is not original - may need some newly added switches))).
It is Saturday-Evening - I do not really feel like working on pins - till tomorrow, greetings Rolf

No problem Rolf enjoy your weekend!!!
Thanks

Going to create a stencil for the cab. I’m pretty impressed with how much geometry was hidden in this simple design.

Ok the single template didn’t work because the shapes get wider and shorter from back to front. So I had to grid out and draw each shape to make it true to the original design

Started painting the cab. I’m just filling some of the larger dents and then laying down so heavy coats of primer. I’m not going to try to make this look 100% it’s more of a practice pin for me, really.

I’m loving Ace Hardwares brand of paint I wish they offered more colors.

Laid down the spatter today. And painted the head. Also did the black trim. Stencils are next. Decided not to go all out and paint the inside of everything. Too lazy I guess.

Quoted from phergott:

Nicely done. I always admire the work done on cabs. BTW, the splatter job you did looks real nice and natural-like factory. Does the splatter go on the stencils as well?

Thanks!
As far as I can tell the spatter is just on the base coat. The colors don’t get it. I may be wrong but from what I’ve seen it doesn’t.

Thanks Rolf!
The pop bumpers, slings, and the flippers are strong in this game and it plays really fast! First time I played I thought it was high tapped but it is not, just a strong game. I have the same player shoot again image in my back glass but I do not have the relay for the add-a-ball.

I love this game I really wish runs of plastics and back glasses existed for it. Especially since there was over 4000 produced.

Thanks for all your help with getting this game running smoothly

So after way too many hours of learning this photo editing tool I was able to make my first plastic. Very happy with the actual plastic however after getting it together I’m seeing that the holes in the scan aren’t lining up with where the posts are on my game. Going to make a few edits and print it again. Should look pretty good after some adjustments. Using photo paper and the translucency is perfect. Once I get it how I want I’ll mylar the picture to the back of the plastic.

How did you cut the plastic?

After I finish making a few updates Ill post what I did, it was actually WAYYYY easier than I thought it would be. At work at the moment, so when I get home I'll post some more about it, basically just scored Lexan, snapped it into shape and then used my Dremel Multi Max and sanded the rounded ends to shape.

#57 4 years ago

so I made some edits of the pictures to fill in the art where the scans had holes since it didn’t line up. I improvised what I think that missing art looked like. Got 2 plastics done.

So after I tried to clear coat the back of the back glass to preserve it, I pretty much ruined the art because the clear shrank as it dried and lifted it off the glass. After a lot of communication with Steve at BGRESTO I’m sending it his way.

Thanks man! It takes me so long to mix colors but I think I got that teal dead on. I’m out of town for a few days so I’ll tackle more on Thursday. I’m more excited about making a protector than painting. I ordered a couple 24x48 in .030 PETG. So it’ll basically be a clear hardtop.

The lighting angle is awful. I cant find a good angle to avoid tons of glare. Plus there are so many scratches when the light catches it they appear white. But I filled all the wear and scratches.

Stripped the playfield and lined up the sheet to get it marked. I was surprised to see this stuff could easily be cut with scissors. I got the edges flush and drilled out holes for the rails.

On some of the scrap plastic I practiced drilling out holes for the roll overs. Turned out fine however I realized that the additional height of the plastic was causing the ball to get stuck when it pushed the switch down. So to make up the difference I cut out a circle the size of the roll over, added a double sided adhesive, and put it on the platform. Now when the ball rolls over the surface is level just like it would normally play. Obviously when I do this with the real sheet I’ll have cleaner cuts and I’ll sand it better but this give you an idea of my direction.

It’s super fast and a drain monster. These little flippers are really powerful which surprised me. As a single player game I don’t care about the score all I want to do is light the special and hit the star target.
Last weekend I had people over and we had a mini knockout tournament, everyone was hooked on it. I think it’s because it looks like such a simple game but it’s so hard to complete the board. You’ll get so close and it’ll rip it away from you so fast. I’m addicted to it. I put up my personal best last night of just over 4000. It’s so funny to say that because I thought I would be rolling the score every time.

Got my backglass from BGResto. It looks pretty good, although a bunch of colors are off. It’s not bad just doesn’t match. Purple changed to black. Vanilla sky is peach. Greys changed to peach. Browns changed to red. Some of the fuchsia changed to red.
But it looks better than the mess I made out of the original. Overall I’m happy with it. It’s definitely more vibrant.

Been having an issue with this game skipping a ball intermittently since day one. Finally got it fixed by replacing Switch C on Stack 3 of the score motor. Thanks to John_In_WI for helping me out through the “looking for EM parts” thread.

Had the Mrs play a few games with me to make sure nothing missed.

Working like it should now!

I’ve been wanting to turn this game into an AAB.

Deez helped me by giving me a relay bank from an old parts bowler.

I found the appropriate relay and stripped some of the old wiring to make it look a little more authentic.

Installed it and gave it a test, looks so good with that light between the flippers and being able to finally see the “Same Player Shoots Again” text lit up in the backglass!

Hi mrm_4
You did a great job - re-making the (at the time) "available on request Extraball-Relay" to change the pin to 'Add-A-Ball, Add-A-Ball-Mode' (I prefer saying 'Extraball-Mode'). I refer to my (post-53) https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/shangri-blah-to-shangri-la-/page/2#post-5152622 playing in Replay-Mode - having an new put into the pin feature "Extraball". Greetings Rolf

Thanks Rolf!

I forgot about these coin door labels I printed up a while ago. So I got them applied.
Plus any excuse to open the door and smell the inside of the cabinet makes me happy.

I randomly got a text from my buddy Glen that he saw Shangri La plastics On eBay. After shitting my pants I log on and immediately start bidding like crazy.

I’ve been tracking one plastic for 2 years and there it is!!!

I won the bid and just got the plastics today.

The seller shipped them in a fucking bag and it’s snapped in half!!!

I’m so sick of this hobby shitting on me every step forward is 2 back with every project.

Quoted from EasternBloc:

That really sucks, sorry to hear about the plastic damage. I've really enjoyed following this thread; beautiful game!

Quoted from Atari_Daze:

Damn, of all the luck.

Thanks for following
Yeah it sucks so bad, the eBay seller was cool about it and is refunding. He feels sick after I explained the significance. Said he found them in a drawer, thought they were more durable being plastic, and had no clue anyone would even care about them.

Oh well, hunt continues

I appreciate both the offer and suggestions. The plastic in the game now is broke in the same place and the one I just got is broke.
I made some make shift plastics for the other piece of this game that I was happy with but I’m going to consider cleaning these other duplicate originals and flatten them and see how they look in the machine. With that being said the thrill of the hunt for an unbroken original has its hooks in me. Had these been in a box I would’ve won this battle haha.
If I change my mind I’ll let you know Atari_Daze about the redraw.

These plastics I got must’ve been from a later or earlier run from what I had in the machine.
These have more holes in them for the posts.

I needed to find some more taller posts on eBay but the problem is finding screws that will go through them.

I decided to steal enough long screws from up top to go into the longer posts on the lower playfield and replace the upper playfield screws with 2” machine screws and attach a nylon nut under the playfield.

Gave her a wax and she’s ready to show off her new “old” plastics.

Still love this game!

Pulled this baby out of the game room to make space for Strato Flite. Torn on whether I should keep this game in the workshop or list it. What would a fair price be for this one?

#112 1 year ago
Quoted from Sea_Wolf:

Hard to believe you’d part with it after all the work you put into it. It would be really difficult for anyone else to put a price on it.
I understand, I’m out of room too. I’ve got 6 of 14 machines that are never leaving the game room so I’m guessing your other 9 machines fall into that category.

Yeah that’s the biggest problem I have really is selling after a resto. I don’t really want to sell any of them but I don’t know what else to do other than just horde them

Quoted from Garrett:

That's the conondrum isn't it? If your lineup is limited and you chose this pin to come out then the die is cast, is it not?
It's a great looking game and the restoration you did is, as usual, top notch. But yeah, it is a 2" flipper game.
How much is a storage shed from Home Depot or Lowe's
I hate to think of storing them in uncontrolled environments but it's that, route it or sell it for $800-$1,000.
I've already come to terms that I'll lose money as I find them and restore them. Honestly, I'd have to really love a pin to go the the retoration extent that you do. It is hard to let something go that takes so much time to not only get looking great but playing great as well.
It is a labor of love.
You need a bigger house, that's all.

I just gave it a nice wax and played a game. Even though it’s a 2” flipper game the flippers throw the ball all the way up to the top pretty hard. Getting all 3 stars lit and going after that special is great on this game.
