BR hooked me up with a Whirlwind with potential a month ago or so and I have been slowly but surely shopping it out. Well, it is finally almost done. Here are a few pics of it so far...

I have put a few games on it and I am very pleased with the results. The game plays SO fast.

I rebuilt the flippers and replaced the coils.

Resleeved all other coils

Got all new ramps, because I hate hazy ramps, and it just makes the game look so much better.

Cointaker frosted white GI, frosted inserts, mix of incandescent, super and regular led flashers to get the best look (in my opinion of course).

Next up: I am going to wire the topper with flashers corresponding with the playfield lightning flashers and flasher for the skill shot/white standup, a couple frosted GI wired to the upper playfield GI, and a UV for a nice glow wired to the lower playfield for when the GI goes out and the flashers hit. I should have that done today and will try to get a gameplay video posted.

Mmmmm.... I doubt I will be selling this any time soon. Whirlwind was what started my pinball fever. I always regretted selling it. That is why I had to have another one. I'll keep you in mind if something changes my mind one day

Beautiful Game. Love Whirlwind.

#13 12 years ago

Thanks everybody! I am VERY happy to have Whirlwind back in the lineup. Here is what I did with the topper flashers....

Two cool white frosted attached to lightning panel GI.

Two cool white super 906 flashers. Left one attached to left side lightning panel flasher, the right one attached to the right lightning panel flasher.

One yellow super 906 flasher attached to 100K bonus flasher.

Two UV super flex atached to front playfield GI.

looks amazing, normally not huge on Leds, but you really knew which onbes and where to put em!

#18 12 years ago

No Problem S.t ,, I wanted to Play IJ and IM anyway .. Whirlwind should be a Pin that's in the
Tourney @ Lost Ark .. Good Play-n Pin , not a very High-Score-n Pin , but it can be if you Know the Right shot's ...

#19 12 years ago

Nice looking game and fun to play too

Very nice LED formula. I,d like to get mine looking that good . Don't suppose you want to share that formula? Love the topper mod as well, you wouldn't mind if I used your idea to mod mine .

Yeah, it's posted up for anyone that is interested. Glad you like it. I am liking the lights in the topper. An easy addition and looks cool in my opinion.

I can send you a list of what I put in it. One thing to mention is that I painted the green board that is mounted behind the lightning white...but only the side that faces the plastic. It really helps reflect the GI lighting from that panel out on the playfield better. And makes the lightning bolt look much better from the players perspective.

Check it out...

Hey Shane,I'm already on cointaker putting a list together. I don't see a UV super flex ? PM me a list. Good idea on painting lightning board. I'm comparing my machine to yours and its day and night. I hate to copy people but my WW would look so much better with more light and topper mod.

#24 12 years ago

Looks good. Playfield looks to be in great condition.

Hey Shane where did you post lighting info?

I was referring to the topper leds... I actually haven't posted the playfield led list.

I used Cointaker cool white frosted in all of the playfield GI.

I also used frosted in most of the inserts... color matched for the reds, greens, warm white for the yellow/orange inserts.. cool white for clear inserts. Used warm frosted in the skyway tolls counter, even for the clears... just because.

Used mainly regular 906 white for flashers under the playfield because I was running out of money. If you have the extra cash, go for the supers. BIG difference. I will eventually get some.

I used incandescent 906 flashers in the red domes on top of the playfield and incandescent 555s in the pop bumpers. It just glows better when the GI cuts off and just the flashers are going.

Lightning panel was two warm white super 906 on the left, the rest moving right were cool white super 906 flashers.

I used incandescent with condoms for the cellar signs.

Backbox was cool white frosted for the upper half with the sky, the ground and van/car was warm white frosted. Super cool white blinkers for sky and warm white blinkers for vehicles, etc.

I don't have exact counts, but hopefully that helps some.

#27 12 years ago

Yep... you need some leds! like now!!!

Did you ever figure out the missing lightshow? Looks like the CPU got stuck on a single lighting mode. Probably connectors.

I honestly don't think there is one. If there is, can somebody post it? Both of my Whirlwinds have done the same thing. No lightshow at all once you put in you initials. You get some playfield inserts moving if you don't place.

#30 12 years ago

Light show at 5:20.

#31 12 years ago

That's one of the sweetest Whirlwinds I have ever seen. Nice job. Last time I played one, there wasn't even any art left on the spinners.

#32 12 years ago

I haven't had a problem with my lightshow when entering initials. Thanks again for the list ill give you a heads up when LED'S one.

That one is really nice for a non-DP playfield! Very nice!

#34 12 years ago
Quoted from Crash:

Mine does exactly what yours does if you don't get a high score. Guess that is what it is supposed to do. However, if you get a high score, it doesn't do any light show after you enter your initials. Just plays a different tune with no light show.

#35 12 years ago

Nice looking Whirlwind! I'm on the fence about getting one sometime. I love the theme and the pin, but I'm afraid it's too close of a layout to FH. If I had more room.....

#36 12 years ago

Here's a Video of S.tastic's 1st Whirlwind that i bought .. The Light-show was the same .. In this Video a H.Score was entered ..

I had a Funhouse at the same time as Whirlwind. Totally different feel.

#38 12 years ago

Nice Shane!
That is one clean Whirlwind!!!
I was sad when they took the one I used to play every week, away... (@ Flynn's Arcade.)
One day though,
She will be mine!

Shane, In general are lights standard inside the topper, or something you added to your WW ?

Quoted from mulder2010:

There are no lights standard in the topper. I just got some 555 sockets and wire and connected each socket to the desired GI/Flasher on the playfield.

Wow, both of those Pins (the two with LEDs of course) look amazing. Yours is nice too pinwillie, just seems to be missing something... I would really like to have a WW, it is such a fun Pin. Thanx for sharing guys.

EDIT: Ok, I'm the idiot here...sorry pinwillie, totally missed that the last set of pictures was of your LED loaded pin...my bad.

Awesome! BIG difference from your first pics I think LEDs really work well for Whirlwind.

Shane - is the entire cabinet on your WW as nice as the playfield is? Great job on the restoration!!!

#46 12 years ago

Wow shane, that is really ugly, I mean truly terrible. Tell you what, I will be a nice guy and take it off your hands .

(in all seriousness, that is just gorgeous!)

It was in really good shape to begin with. I just did some minor touch ups. Here are a few pics. The lighting is not the greatest and my phone camera stinks, but here goes....
