Just a little show and tell for those that might be interested.

I bought a TAF in nice condition from BR about 2 months ago now. I played it as it was for a while because I was tapped out of money for the time being, and I really wanted to see what issues the game had, if any, and to get some ideas about the impending shop.

I started the shop about a month ago and figured I would do my show and tell all together from beginning to current.

The teardown:

The playfield was in good condition, some minor wear at the chair and vault. No cracked plastics, only yellowed clear plastics. Small arm cracked under bookcase, small crack in ramp at sharp turn at the top.

Here are a few pics at the beginning of the teardown.

Then a LONG time passes as I re-sleeve all coils, rebuild flippers and replace flipper coils (2 of the 4 had the wrong coil), clean/adjust switches, Novus 2 / Wax the playfield, polish all of the metal bits with mothers, Novus 2 all playfield plastics, etc., etc., etc... shewww!!!

Here are some of the pics as it came together....

Nice job! Thank you for sharing this. This is a cool project and one I hope to duplicate sometime on a game. Neat to see the how-to pics.

Next up... I am going to try to add some UV/Blue GI lighting to the cloud topper, and I have an idea for a custom light bar that will be mounted at the top backboard above the decal. It will contain 6 555 sockets and the front of the plate will have 6 holes just big enough to fit a CoinTaker flex head through. I hope to add the extra lighting that this game needs. This will give me the flexibility to change colors and amount of light provided. I don't want to mount one of those overly bright led strips back there. I feel it would be too much. We shall see how it turns out. Here is my idea...

Thanks everybody!

Quoted from papazit1963:

The target decals came from www.pinballdecals.com

The other decals came from seller: "judge-dreads-pinball" on ebay.

#13 11 years ago

Just finished with the topper GI. The camera doesn't pick up the UV mixed in the blue, but here it is anyway...

Great idea with the backboard lighting. When I had a TAF, the lack of light back there was my biggest complaint about the game.

Looks awesome, Shane! Do you have all your Lawlors in a row now? Bet they look great together.

Ok, so I got a little off track rebuilding a seadoo over the past month for some summertime fun, but I finally had some time yesterday to make the lightbar for TAF.

I am extremely happy with the results.

Here are the pics of the "ShaneTastic Upper Playfield Lightbar v 1.0." Just playing around, but I needed to name this thing!

#33 10 years ago

#34 10 years ago

#35 10 years ago

Thanks! I tapped into the upper playfield GI.

Quoted from SKILL_SHOT:

Thanks! Yeah, it was just one of my crazy ideas. I have seen people add single color led strips to the upper playfield, but I wanted something I could add multiple colors to the dark areas of the game but not be too "loud." The led strips are too bright for me. The lightbar allows for more customization and is hidden from the players direct view. The plastic piece of the lightbar over the flex leds is sanded to make the surface "frosted" so there is not a glare on the playfield.

Can't do it!! Now that I have finally finished fixing it all up, I need to actually play it some. I really love this game! I don't plan on selling this one any time soon.
