I have a Williams “F-14 Tomcat”. I would like to change the settings to Free-Play. As it is now. Anytime I turn on the machine, “Factory Settings” blinks and every time, I have to manually set the game to free-play. How can I set the machine to Free-Play permenantly, so even if I unplug and plug in the machine again the setting remains?

Thank you for any thoughts.

(I have the manual, but I only ser the temp-setting walk through.)

Sounds like your battery on the MPU is bad and it’s not keeping the settings.

When a game starts up with the words "Factory Settings" it means that either:

1. Your batteries are dead.
2. Your battery holder has gone bad
3. The onboard RAM is failing/has failed

A failing RAM chip, as I understand, is very rare, so I'd place my money on your batteries or battery holder are bad. In either case, you should replace the board mounted battery holder with a remotely mounted one, to avoid future potential battery leaking issues from ruining the expensive CPU board. Others recommend changing out your RAM for NVRAM, but that requires sensitive board work that many people may not be comfortable doing themselves.

Mbaumle, lot of words to repeat what I said

Kelasa, Here is a link to a video on how to relocate the battery holder to prevent your MPU from getting damaged from the batteries leaking.

4. Diode D-2 can be bad also.

Start easy, check the batteries.

Awesome guys. Thank you.
I had the machine seviced not too long ago and I got a new battery holder. There was uncleable battery acid on it. I think I remember the tech telling me the batteries would need to be swapped soon, because all I had on hand were old ones!

Perfect. Thank you very much guys, for your prompt responses!

I installed new batteries and am receiving the same “Adjust Failure” message, when I turn off and on the machine and “Factory Settings” if I unplug-replug it.

I have a brand new battery holder and batts. Is it time to call in a tech, or is there still something I (layman), can procede to try and fix on my own?

Thank you for your thoughts.

You can check for voltage on both sides of D-2 with the game turned off.
