Hey guys -
Was reminded recently of something regarding the X-Files playfield.

Were insert colors changed during production? I remember owning a playfield (ordered NOS from Sega back when the game was new), and getting one with different colored inserts. However, looking for images, I haven't been able to find a shot of this yet.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going crazy.. anyone remember this?

Interesting. Which inserts were different, if you remember?

I was looking at an X-Files last night and on the right orbit on the play field, I noticed 2 cutouts, but only the first one had the rollover switch inside it. The second one looked like it was not in use and was only about 2-3 inches after the first one.

Wow. I had completely forgotten I even opened this thread.

I haven't found anything out yet, and can't find any pictures online. I don't have the field anymore, so i can't check. I'm almost curious enough to contact Stern and ask.

The ones I really remember are the ones at the ramp - the red arrows, orange triangles and green 'X's. Again, this was a loong time ago, but something wants me to say that some of the inserts (X's? Jackpot?) were clear, and not colored.

I looked in images here and ipdb, and thinks I see what you're mentioning - but it's on the left side of the field in the orbit - is that what you meant? (There aren't enough images of the right side to tell, and oddly - I can't find a single image of a *blank* playfield..)

I didn't get to look over the left side as well because of all the stuff on top. But I'm including a pic of the right side where I was referring to, you'll see the cutout in the far mid-lower right corner. I think the one with the rollover switch would be about bottom center in the photo, but is not pictured.

I think I'm seeing the same thing you see with the play field insert color as well.

I just tore my game apart and I have it on the left side like yours and also on the right side there's another one. Both are empty.

Edit: Necro Bump!

It took me FOREVER to find this image. But I found it.

I'm MORE happy that I'm not going crazy than I am about actually finding an image of is different playfield. I'm going to be getting this in a month or so, if the seller agrees to sell it, but since I don't have one of the other (more common?) ones, I'd be curious if any of you owners sees anything else different about it. Notice it DOES have the two switch cutouts, too, around the loop.

It's hard to tell in the picture if that PF has the 7 white inserts between the flippers.

I don't know about *7*, but the four arrows (bonus) ones are clear as well; noticed that the other PFs have red arrows there.

Here's the PF that is going into my pin...

Nice!
I noticed that the 'X' inserts are different colors as well - on the one I posted, the loop/ramps are white. On everyone else's, they're a milky green. The odd one seems to have a darker green used for the inlanes.

Also, the center post under the 'shoot again' light is missing. Huh. But, it seems to have a huge metal plate over the magnet/filedrawer area.

I just noticed that the big round insert between the pop bumpers is red, mine is clear.

I asked, and he said it does, and is supposed to get me a picture soon.

Huh, interesting..!
