When I pull up the Portals Menu, it defaults to the switch test and I cannot get to the main menu no matter what I try.

Both the GREEN Service Credits/Select Button and Black Button are "Momentary" buttons.

What would cause the Portals Menu to automatically default to the switch test? It almost seems like the Black Enter button is automatically activated upon entry the Main Menu (it is not stuck and I'm not sure if the switch Test is the first test).

I never actually see the Main Menu even for a split second.

Thank you.

Really odd. I have a BW and am not even sure where to start. Did you start with another problem and were going to trouble shoot it?

Quoted from actionfigureheav:

Both the GREEN Service Credits/Select Button and Black Button are "Momentary" buttons.

According to https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Data_East/Sega#Entering_Diagnostics_or_Audits
“The green button is a two position button. When the button is in the down position, pressing the black button will cause the game to enter diagnostics. When the button is in the up position, pressing the black button will cause the game to enter audits & adjustments.”

I would do some testing of those buttons. It sounds like one or more of them is either stuck or not performing in one position.

I had a funky flipper board that was causing the menu to constantly scroll through options. Replaced the flipper board after attempting to fix it and all is well. Apparently bad flipper boards are not unusual in these gen games because the playfield can pretty easily slide of the rails and drop onto the flipper boards below.

Ok, thank you all for your input.

I am not sure if this was like this when it was purchased, but everything else on the game works fine.

I don't believe that someone removed the clip to make the green button Momentary as it suggests here:

http://arcarc.xmission.com/Pinball/Stern%20Service%20Bulletins/sb/sb74.pdf

I think they fixed that down the line due to that problem. The green button doesn't currently lock down at all. Both buttons seem to register fine, just can't get to the main menu for whatever reason.

Also, it doesn't automatically scroll through the options unless I use the buttons.

I did not make any adjustments to the game prior to this issue, but I never had to get into the menu so it could have been purchased like this.

I'll check the flipper boards.

I'm guessing the connector of the left which isn't attached to anything is for a bill acceptor.

Should the connector in my hand that is coming from inside the left side of the cabinet supposed to be connected to something?

When I click the black button to get into the menu. It displays the first image.

Then it goes directly into the 2nd image without even showing the main menu even for a split second.

I also noticed that when I go to the "?" icon and click the black button, it only displays the help menu for a second (not even enough time to read the whole thing) and makes 2 beeping noises and puts me right back on the switch test screen.

Clicking on the "Prev" icon, it keeps me on the switch test screen.

First immamaculate. There I said it.

Second, are you sure the test buttons are functioning? On my TZ (not sega I know) the last button was funky because it had been soaked by soda. Are you capable of testing the switches with a multimeter?

Comparing your switch test photo to the switch matrix on page 34 of the manual shows:

1. You have 5 balls in the trough - switches 10,11,12,13,14
2. The extra ball/buy-in league button is closed - switch 8

Could switch 8 be the culprit?

I will try to test the switches with a multimeter.

I will also check switch #8 and report back.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions.

What an amazing community! Thank you all for your help.

Gogojohnnyquack was right! You saw the closed #8 switch from my photo.

I reseated the 4 connectors to that switch and the Main Menu popped right up and the switch is now working as it should.

Thanks again everyone!
