Is there a go-to cleaner you can spritz in the volume control POT in the cabinet of a Gottlieb System 80 (Time Line)?

Any adjustments to it makes the sound crackle with static.

Nope. They corrode over time. You can twizzle it a bit to "knock off" some of the corrosion and reduce scratchiness, but the only real solution is replacement.

You could try Deoxit. but like Chris said... I would just replace.

I use Nu-Trol. It's made for volume controls. Catalog # 401B-140G (barcode: 779008401149).

You can also use Radio Shack 6400148:

By the time you buy a new cleaner you are halfway to buying a brand new pot that takes no time to instal.

I figured that might be the case. Oh well.

According to a system 80 manual for a different game (I don't have the one for this game yet), it's a 100 ohm 2W POT.

I did some digging and found this, which looks pretty close to what is in the machine now:

Or is there another preferred go-to source for these kinds of POTs? GPE and bigdaddy didn't seem to carry them.

Damn. That's pricey. Partially because it's RoHS compliant. Check the RatShack. They might have one. You can also use a 500 ohm pot. It works, but is more sensitive.

That one is rated for 5W. Can I use a POT rated for more than 2W?

I usually take my POTs apart and clean it out with an eraser. Did that on my truckstop and it worked great.

Yup. It's rated =up to= 5W, so it will be fine.

Or I was too lazy to dig out the manual to check the specs and order a new one. It took me 2 minutes and worked perfectly. No reason to order one and wait a week for it to come in.

Just to give it the ol' college try, I went ahead and took the POT apart. There was a little bit of grime / black dust in there, but after cleaning and reassembly, it worked good as new.

Thanks for all the info guys

Nice! Nothing better than a fix that's free, and thanks for putting the resolution in your thread.

#15 9 years ago

Nice. Sometimes it seems like buying a new part is the easier and quicker resolution to a problem. Not always the case, as you've just shown

Yep...I didn't even bother desoldering since there was enough slack on the wires.

I put the loose parts in my ultrasonic cleaner, and wiped the rest off with a paper towel with some simple green on it.

It only took maybe 15 minutes.
