It's been a long time since I've been able to take on a project so here it is. I have one of the nicest Scared Stiffs around and it's time to go crazy on it. I shopped it awhile back, here's pics:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/mike217/sets/72157626530881749

The original silkscreen cabinet is 99.9% perfect. I have a gorgeous brand new clearcoated playfield ready to swap in even though it doesn't need it.

The question is what is perfect and the highest level by todays standards because that's what I want to do. I know this is totally subjective so I'm just looking for opinions. I love chrome trim but if someone can show me a killer powdercoat color that's better for the trim I'd love to see it. LED's? I don't know, it's a classic game so maybe yes, maybe no. I've been a little bit out of the loop lately so I might not be up to speed on all the latest bits and pieces. I'm just shopping for some ideas I might not have thought of yet. Thanks in advance.

Very nice...

#3 8 years ago

Hammered mild grey color for the trim?

#4 8 years ago

Awesome! Best pinball game EVER built. PERIOD! Here's a glimpse of mine:

Amendes- sweet game! I have 2 questions for ya-
Is that an led strip lighting up the backbox in uv color?
Where did you get the coin door painted?
I keep getting close to attempting the coin door myself, but then I wimp out

#6 8 years ago

I started restoring mine in 2010. Should really finish it

I'll watch and enjoy!

#7 8 years ago

That coin door looks great! I'd really like to see some different powdercoat options. If anyone has powdercoated their SS lets see pics. Slime green might be too much, black might be to invisible, blood red might be an option, or whatever else you chose would be great to see.

Thanks man - so, answering your questions:

1) Yes, that was a led strip on the backbox but I took it off because it reflected too much on the playfield glass!
2) The coin door was painted by a pin restorer here in Brazil, as well as the legs!

man, I love that coindoor.
My hardware (not the coindoor) is glossy black powdercoat..kind of "invisible" in a classy, make the coffin art pop kinda way .IMG_20140302_194013_923.jpgIMG_20140302_194013_923.jpgIMG_20140302_211836_465.jpgIMG_20140302_211836_465.jpgIMG_20140302_212102_774.jpgIMG_20140302_212102_774.jpg

I would replace the cabinet protectors with the Stern style. The type you have can still wrinkle the decal.

#11 8 years ago

Thanks, but they aren't decals I did make that mistake in the afm next to it.....Did new decals myself....tons of prep work...and those protectors wrinkled the decals

As an example: This work to me is at an amazing level.

Black looks great. understated but very nice. I'd be tempted to splatter some red on it to look like blood.

#14 8 years ago

Pinball pimp is doing some awesome work for sure, very impressive. I've done a couple oldies myself:

Wizard: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mike217/sets/72157632060513966

I'm leaning towards chrome trim on Scared Stiff but am still keeping an open mind to other ideas or suggestions I haven't seen or tried before.

#15 8 years ago

OP, I do like the black trims.... and, like ysfguy, my cabinet was repainted... much better than decals, I'd go for that direction. ...

ysfguy, I'll show you an AFM coin door that you will find stunning.... but just tomorrow when I get the pics at home!

#16 8 years ago

cool. My cab is original, no repaint. Did you repaint the whole thing, or touchup the reds?

Touch up in general, not only the reds.

AFM coin door as I was talking about - painted by the same guy who did my SS!

So..... where's the OP, any news on his endeavour?

I'm still here. I just set up the first rotisserie today. The new clearcoated playfield looks awesome. My second rotisserie will get set up this weekend and I'll pull the original playfield from the cabinet and get it mounted up. I messed around with some LED's today. They flicker noticeably so I'll have to get an LED OCD board setup to go with LED's. They do look good so that should be worth it. I'm pretty sure I'll go with full chrome trim and blades. I like VERY shiny so that's what works best for me.

Here's mine. Love chrome as well. Even chromed the apron.
Brand new everything I could lay my hands on. New playfield with 6 coats of clear. Awesome

Don't know, hadn't given it a thought yet. Save it for another day I suppose.

For a reasonable price I'd buy it from you.

Got some done this week. Top of old playfield is bare and I've made some progress transferring parts to the new playfield. P1010003 (2).JPGP1010003 (2).JPGP1010005.JPGP1010005.JPG
Next up is the wiring harness underneath.

#38 8 years ago

Progress was pretty good since I last posted. The wiring harness is transferred over and detailed with lots of extra tie wraps. All the metal parts are buffed and cleared. The old playfield is totally stripped. It's nice to be down to one rotisserie. Now I'm waiting for new ramps and all the parts I sent out to be chromed to come back.

Ramps are in. They were custom ordered with no hardware riveted on so the all the metal bits could be bright buffed before being riveted on.

Shiny!

Just waiting for all the parts being chrome plated to come back to keep going.

CHROME! This is the most fun of the whole process, opening a box of chrome from Mike Chestnut. This is better than Christmas. Legs and siderails are chrome as well. Thanks Mike Chestnut!!!

He chromes the plastic coin door parts now?

#43 8 years ago

No those are metal surrounds. The coin door was purchased as a new replacement a few years back when they were still using metal for coin door surrounds. I haven't bought a Bally /Williams door in a long time, maybe they still do it that way.

#44 8 years ago

Lots more finished:1.JPG1.JPGShiny enough?2.JPG2.JPG3.JPG3.JPG4.JPG4.JPG5.JPG5.JPGdon't forget to trim a sawblade off each side of the backboard to make room for mirror blades6.JPG6.JPGso close!!7.JPG7.JPG

you guys are giving me some motivation. My cabinet is totally faded and I have new decals I need to apply, but have been hesitant to do it because of lack of experience, both pulling playfields and applying decals.

I like the chrome bar and side rails, but also the black ones as I think the black gives it more of a modern look to it. Where does one get chrome rails and lock down bar?
