Quoted from dnaman:

I apologize in advance regarding this question as I am not sure if it has been asked in various ways.
Is it common to have an issue with the right VUK not always kicking the ball onto the ramp above? I am looking at a restored SS and it seems that early games seem to fire up and onto the ramp with success and then it seems to be fit and miss. the current owner has bent the blue steel flap up a little which helps but sometimes the pin tries a few times and then the ball ejects under the ramp onto the PF.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks!

Yes, it's common. I've had to tweak mine several times.

Very common. I just dealt with the very same issue on a SS I bought a few months ago. There are different fixes suggested in this and other threads. For me, it involved unscrewing the 4 screws below the playfield that hold the VUK assembly to the playfield, then adding washers to adjust the angle of the VUK. My ball was hitting the front edge of the ramp and not clearing the flap cleanly. So I added washers to the other side (the two bottom screws when looking at the assembly from under the playfield) and it caused the ball to fire further toward the rear of the hole. Problem solved, it clears the hole now. There are other methods too.

Great to hear! Thanks for the detailed suggestion

#3554 73 days ago

Anyone know why there is two holes in the remote and two under the flipper pivot points . I know about the adjustment holes . I’m thinking maybe there is suppose to be a wire guide or something .

You are correct, there are holes for a ball wire guide under each flipper. I am not sure they were never installed but the clear dimples into the holes.

Officially joined the club tonight with a gorgeous restore!

The VUK does have trouble kicking the ball up to the ramp sometimes. I will have to try some of the suggestions and maybe slow motion video capture the action.

Fun pin though and a cool theme.

Wow, such a beautiful example of SS you found. I love my SS. It's the only game I like enough to consider buying a $1k new playfield and installing it. I can't imagine how complicated that work will be, but I may have to consider buying a rotisserie and making it happen. Has anyone else installed a new pf in their SS? How was it?

#3558 72 days ago

My games are relegated to the dungeon basement space beneath my office. I do an okay job of keeping dust down but I've still been wanting to find some theme-adjusted pinball covers on the cheap.

The Elvira one is probably my favorite. If I know I'm not going to get to play for a couple days, I throw em on.

Found it on redbubble.com, searched for Tapestry Elvira Coffin and this is the small size. I didn't find many with direct art from related pinball but found a few that were theme-adjacent enough to make it work. Not my art or anything just thought I'd share.

Know of any comprehensive sources with pinball art /covers available online? I've seen them tucked away at shows and a few generics at the usual parts suppliers..

You can always go to one of those websites that make custom blankets. They are not expensive and you can use any image you want!
collage.com or shutterfly

I have a problem with my leapers, they work flawlessly as long as the ball don't hit them too hard, but if the ball travels too fast the leaper jumps up but the switch behind it doesn't register at all. This means that about 30-40% of the ball hits never registers in the game, which is annoying.

I have been thinking I perhaps could bend the metal leafs inside the switches closer, so the circuit closes faster when hit, but there isn't much gap as of now already so not sure its possible and/or will fix anything.

Anyone have a suggestion how to fix this issue? Is this the same for you too or unique to my machine?

Just checked and I'm running 1.5 already, so already on latest ROM.

I'm still wondering if this is a general problem or only on my machine, any of you have this behavior too?

Hi guys, just a question regarding the spider spinner. I put a new stepper motor and board in as the spinner never worked when I bought the machine, when the game boots up the spider indicator stops at the 1'o clock position. Is that correct as per the original boards as well? Thanks in advance.
Cheers Terry.

I just bought a bunch off eBay or Amazon. I thought they were specific mods for Scared Stiff. You can simply search for “rubber monster finger puppets.” They are cheap. $1 each. See below.

Still having issues will the spider VUK kick up and forward. Although it often works, there will be times when it doesn't.

I had a friend send me pics of his, which never has kick out issues and see that he has this metal arch over the hole on/above the ramp. Any references online show this as a ramp 'ramp fix U bracket'. I've seen a couple of other owners in here with this installed. Is this supposed to solve the kick up problem or help protect the ramp and spine?

That metal arch keeps the ball from flying off the ramp and adds strength when it kicks out of the VUK. The geometry of the that ramp VUK is really touchy! The best way to get your VUK to operate between 95 and 100% (because that is about the best you can get) is to tweak the angle of the VUK (providing your VUK and ramp are installed correctly) just a bit either way to get it to fire correctly. It takes some patients but persistence will pay off.

Went to a friend's place tonight to look at his scared stiff and I am clearly missing a full second flap! (lower gate trap door and flap). Although I have now found a detailed description of what is missing, there doesn't seem to be either any photos or detailed diagram anywhere, including in the manual.

The description of the assembly is:
'Bally SCARED STIFF pinball machine A-21032 Trapdoor Assembly'.

Of the itemized parts which make up the assembly, I do actually have the 01-14385.1 bracket installed along with the #12-7365 wire gate on it. This is the wire/gate on the upper side of the spider hole (when you short plunge, the ball opens the wire gate and drops into the topside of the spider hole). I assume that most SS owners have this bracket and wire gate, as well as the flap which is riveted right on the beast ramp itself, covering the back portion of the hole in the beast ramp.

Now on the 01-14385.1 bracket, there is an extended top which has two holes to hinge (using the straight wire/bar hinge 12-7346) the missing the gate trap door, which should also have a long flap riveted to it. This flap goes through the beast ramp hole and rests on the front (not the one that sits above it riveted to the actual beast ramp. So when the ball is kicked up from the spider VUK, it hits the underside of the long flap on the gate trap door bracket and lifts letting the ball up and onto the beast ramp, it then closes behind to prevent the ball from going back down into the VUK.

Missing:
04-10457.1 gate trap door (this is apparently not pictured or available anywhere)
12-7346 Wire hinge (straight wire/bar)
2 rivets and flap (although I don't need the 2 rivets)

Here are some pictures of what is full assembly, installed is supposed to look like. If anyone know where to order the 04-10457.1 gate trap door, please let me know otherwise I will try to make something.

I actually removed it on mine, flap was hitting it, causing rejects.
I've set it aside just in case but it works better without it in mine.

Same. Works almost flawless without it so i kept it off. sometimes takes 2 tries but overall 95% success.

Very interesting to hear this. Everything on this SS in that area is brand new (or new old stock) from the full ramp to the full spider VUK assembly but I am just getting too many rejects. I've tried everything that I can think of to dial it in but still rejects too often. I will try to make this piece up but it doesn't give me a lot of hope hearing this.

Are you able to see exactly which side of the scoop or ramp hole is causing the rejects? I had to use my cell phone video with a slo-mo feature to see exactly which side it was hitting. Mine was hitting the front, right edge of the ramp hole. I added washers under the assembly to correct the angle and after some trial and error, it’s 95% now. If the angle of your ball trajectory isn’t the problem, maybe it’s the VUK or up-post?

I just started getting an Error Message on my Scared Stiff at startup for the Sound Board (U2 CKSUM Error) and Sound Error SY. 3.65 - I no longer have proper audio, just a horrible buzzing sound. I tried unplugging and restarting but no luck. If it is a bad ROM (U2) is there some place I can send the board for repair as I don't have the technical skills to remove/install myself. Much thanks for any guidance & advice, and I'll list my e-mail in case it's easier to pop me a note directly.
