I'm nearly finished with restoring my JP and have moved on to SBM while we get some have plays on JP before finalizing it.

I purchased SBM with the thought of having some fun with restoring it and I really like the artwork. A fellow Pinsider was selling a fully functioning game with new CPR playfield.

Here are some pics before I started. Playfield a bit worn but I have a new CPR. Cabinet pretty good but I plan to paint it anyway. We played the game for a few months to make sure everything worked. I put LEDs in to make sure they worked fine too.

Old playfield at disassembly.

The CPR playfield was not as smooth as I'd like so I cleared it with some Spaymax 2k.

Sorry, I don't have any before pics. The clear was very thin, sunken circles around the inserts and you could see the grain. After a scuffing with 1000 grit, the clear issues were very apparent. It looked like a lot of dry spray and very patchy.

I plan to add some color to the cabinet. Here are a couple concepts that I'm working thru...

Thoughts on the color addition?

I have a large vinyl cutter and some Oramask and plan to create the masks myself.

Slight improvement...

Your color addition is tastefully subtle, but IMHO the original color scheme is too awesome to mess with.

Thanks for the feedback.

So far,

1 - Original
1 - Pink
2 - No Pink

#8 5 years ago

Man, I only wish my playfield looked as good as the original one you took out.

#9 5 years ago

The pink on the cabinet sides highlights actually gives it a chrome look. I like it

Yeah.. it was not terrible but it was not awesome either. The game was way too clean to do this to but it will be far nicer when done.

#11 5 years ago

Did some tweaking.

Not sure that I like the wizard tho...

Honestly, I like the side art with color. Not liking the Wizard. Like the Ladies as well. By the way, it has been FOREVER since a nice SBM came up for sale. Your refurb is a nice change to see on the forum.

I had thought about just a bit of color on the wizard but it seemed so little

The accents on the balls for the front looked a bit goofy. Scaled a few of them down so that they fit better.

What about just sticking to the theme you have going already and add color to just the pinball for the side art? Give that a shot and post it here.

#16 5 years ago

Top side nearly complete.

I'm digging the target decals.

Bottom side started. Doing away with the bare wire for the inserts.

Buffing. Completely done with just the buffer.

Playfield temporarily in cabinet for testing... That and laziness to start the cabinet part of the project

I've been working on the cabinet. I decided to change the cabinet paint just a bit..

Color around the ball only. Pulling the color out of the guy.
SBM_Full_Cab_Stitch2-new (resized).pngSBM_Full_Cab_Stitch2-new (resized).png

And the front will only have color on the balls. I do need to fix this front coloring up a bit but you get the idea.

FrontCab-Stitch_done (resized).pngFrontCab-Stitch_done (resized).png

Backbox will be plain. I'm torn on this one a bit tho. The color, if done to be somewhat accurate, would be on the bottom side of the ball between the hands but that is so minimal I'm thinking no color.

Any tips on where I can get one of these little switches?

1129215622 (resized).png1129215622 (resized).png
#29 5 years ago

That's a bad ass sander. I need one of those.

Not sure about the switch. Can you take a better picture of it, kind of hard to make out what it looks like. I have never own a Silverball Mania so I am not sure what it looks like, or what it does.

#30 5 years ago

This switch looks like the diagnostics switch on the coin door. You can find those at Digi-Key or Mouser or ask someone on the forum to send you one.
Marco or Steve Young may have these as well. It should not cost more than $2.

Yves

#31 5 years ago

It is the same as the one on the coin door.

#32 5 years ago

And the sander did get a workout yesterday. Garage is remarkedly dust free.

Got the yellow on the ball cut and painted. Scanned the stencils from Pimp and designed my own yellow and orange layers on the ball.

#42 5 years ago

Hey that's looking pretty good what are you using for paint? Are you mixing it or rattle canning it

#43 5 years ago

Rattle can but I'll put a 2k auto clear from a gun on top.

#44 5 years ago

Other side has less touch-ups required.
