Hello. My game had the wings. There are special screws on the side of the head for holding them in place. Each wing is quite heavy and has large metal plate (with pad) running its medial length that arraches to the head. It is fixed in position (no hinge).
Some games for sale no longer have the wings. There is thread here on Pinside about reproduction wings.

Great to know about the DMD position. I thought it was an installation error. I'm definitely wanting one of these now.
