I’m not entirely sure why, but I never really got into Rush.
I think it has more to do with environment and exposure as I don’t really know anyone around me who’s a big Rush fan.
I know the few obvious songs, but my familiarity with their catalog of music is pretty limited.

So here’s the question: some of you are obviously very into this band and really excited about this title.
If I want to go down the “Rush rabbit hole”, which album should I start with and where should I go from there? Like when I first heard Pink Floyd as a teen we got stoned and listed to the Dark Side of the Moon and from there it was The Wall - Wish You Were Here etc.
Cheers

Quoted from ghostbc:

If you like progressive stuff go for 2112 side a and follow the lyrics. For a more radio friendly(more folks can get into it) I would go for Moving Pictures. For the most progressive (they say they had a hard time playing what they wrote) Hemispheres . Enjoy!

Quoted from Pinball-Ike:

To piggyback ghostbc
Moving Pictures
Signals
Permanent Waves
As a slobbering Rush fan, I would go ‘oooh’ ‘ahhh’ over something on every album.

Quoted from skink91:

I think one way to maybe understand or witness the excitement many of us feel about the band is to watch Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage (currently on Netflix).
Album-wise, I suspect all of us have our own weird story how we joined the cult of Rush. For me, someone on my freshman dorm floor had a couple Rush albums and it intrigued me (still didn’t get it though). I chanced upon a used Presto tape (of all the albums, why that one… no idea), and ended up wearing it out listening to it over and over in my car and at work. From there it was all over.
I personally like all of it, but I came in late (on the newer stuff) and then just had my mind blown by their old albums… but it took time for me because I initially really dug the more synthesizer-heavy songs.

Quoted from Seamlesswall:

"He's a radio receiver, tuned to factories and farms" was my hook after being a total Yes head throughout high school. Rush was not progressive enough, or so I thought. (I did end up touring with Jon later in life), but my choice would be the album "Hold Your Fire". Once that's ingested move onto Presto. But then again Roll the Bones, but then again....

Quoted from LOTR_breath:

Rush's sound changed dramatically over the years. For the early stuff I would recommend Caress of Steel. To me their pinnacle album of the 80's is Moving Pictures. Of their 90's stuff I would recommend Roll the Bones or Counterparts. Of their later 2000's stuff, Snakes and Arrows is very solid. But for some unknown to me reason, my all time favorite Rush album is Power Windows 1985. Probably more synthesizer than most Rush fans prefer, but I just love that album. Manhattan Project is just a masterpiece.

Thanks, sounds like a good list of suggestions.
I was born in 1975 and have two older siblings.
My older brother was more into metal and hard rock, while my older sister was more into new wave and pop so I got a lot of exposure to both of those genres growing up. My dad was more into stuff like Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash and my mom more so 60s rock like The Doors, Stones etc.
I caught most of the Grunge/Alternative rock scene through high school and somehow in all of this just never got much exposure to Rush (other than the obvious radio play or songs on the jukebox at bars).
Looking forward to checking out some of these suggestions as I’m always down to check out music I’m not that familiar with.
