Are parts still being sold that would allow me to build one of these awesome DMD clocks?

    #1528 1 year ago

I believe I actually stumbled upon your shop, and came to the same conclusion. I wish there were more boards.

    Quoted from roar:

Best bet is likely to reach out to Boston Pinball to be sure… that isn’t a RunDMD board.

So I know this is the RunDMD thread, but it seems that project is dead. I've reached out to several people about doing another run of boards and haven't heard any updates. That being said, I'm pretty excited that I just learned about this alternative option.

    Quoted from roar:

I don’t think it’s dead… you can usually buy boards direct from https://run-dmd.com/ but they appear out of stock at the moment… it’s happened before, you could email them and get an eta on more boards may be back in stock.

I’ve tried. I spoke to Linus on here and he did respond but hasn’t had time to put it together I think.

    Quoted from ddebuss:

Once I get the hole layout measurements I'm going to design a frame kit for this. In this kit I'll provide the key cables and such to get this hooked up easily.

I'll be interested in hearing more on the kit to work with this alt board.

Curious to know how this controller handles powerloss. I believe with RunDMD I've seen issues of powerloss causing corruption of the SD card. Everything in my game room is on smart plugs, and I'd like to run this the same.

Can I use a DMD from a WPC game (Congo)? I thought I read somewhere that it had to be from a Stern era game.

Edit: The Boston controller listing states it needs to be from Stern and can't be from 90s machines, damn.

Is there a way to change the Stern DMDs that are red to the classic orange style dots? If not, what year did Stern switch to the red dots? Personally, I hate that red look.

    #1595 11 months ago
    Quoted from ddebuss:

As far as I know they only made red LED and a small number of green ones. Pretty sure they never made any other colors. The switch likely happened when they switched from plasma to LED. There may be an xpin 5v display in yellow/orange.

Looks like XPin has many colors, but they're 3x the price of a used Stern DMD so I'll just live with the red. I think without the filter it's not as harsh. Working on gathering parts, will be ordering your kit shortly.

Boston Pinball company had alternative boards on eBay, but looks like they sold out (and before I was able to get one )

Got my controller and kit, working on sourcing a local Stern DMD to finally get this put together.

Highly recommend taking ddebuss up on this offer! My DMD clock is easily one of my favorite things in my game room, and my walls in there are filled. His support while I was assembling the clock was excellent as well.
