Powered up my TZ today and got the "Factory Settings Restored" screen and figured my batteries were dead on my Rottendog MPU. I bought this machine 6 months ago and it appears the MPU was installed in 2014.

Anyway, instead of having a remote 3 AA battery pack, it has a 3.6V lithium battery with leads soldered to both ends. I removed it and it read .140 volts, so I assume it is my problem, but I am now wondering why it had this battery instead of the battery pack listed on Rottendog website?

Should I replace the 3.6V Lithium or get a battery pack from Rottendog? If I go with the Lithium where do you find one with leads already installed on the battery? Thank you!

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the response. I attached some pictures of my board with revision and serial numbers. My board has two lugs on the center left side for the lithium battery with axial leads. Do the RD MPUs have the same problems as the original boards with diodes failing and draining the battery? If so, is there an upgrade/repair for the board I have?

Thank you again The battery connection is the blue block on the left. I found a 3-AA holder from Digikey I could attach to the same leads, but if something is causing a drain I need to fix it. Is the NVRAM from pinitech a fix for depleting batteries? Which position is the Ram that needs replaced? Sorry for the dumb questions. I am new to Rottendog stuff.

Quoted from YeOldPinPlayer:

Rottendog's product info says, " All of our components match the original schematic component designators, so you can troubleshoot with the original schematics or our schematics" so if the original was U6 the Rottendog will also be U6. Consult your schematic.

You'll need the 6324.
Note that #twilight-zone shows the actual time on the clock in attract mode and using NVRAM your pin will not keep track of what time it is so the clock will no longer be right.

Ok, thank you. I also read that about the clock and that is not too big of a deal since I don't leave it running except to play.

Also, I believe it would be U8 instead of U6? I believe U6 is the game ROM. Did you also mean to say 6264 instead of 6324?

Quoted from YeOldPinPlayer:

Yes.

Whatever your schematic says. I don't have one to check, the IPDB manuals don't have schematics (or if they do I overlooked them.)

Ok, thanks. It is U8. Also, it is either at 6264 or 62256, but I am not sure what I have since the number on the RAM comes up as either one, lol.

Quoted from ChrisHibler:

Make sure the RAM is a 6264 or 62256.
The first 50 or so RD MPUs used a Cypress RAM that is not pin compatible with a 6264.

I'm not sure which it is. I looked up the number printed on it U62256ADK07LLG1 and found listings stating it was a 6264 and another being a 62256. Is there a way to tell other than that?

Quoted from ChrisHibler:

Your OK to go with a 6264 NVRAM.
You’ll need to add the 1.5K resistor at R93 and remove jumper W1 (IIRC)

Ok, or I could simply add a 3 AA battery holder where the old lithium battery was, correct?

Quoted from barakandl:

I had to give someone a FM1808 based nvram to get it to work on a R-Dog WPC MPU. The 6264 based NVRAM just locked up the board. Just be warned that 6264 may not be drop in ready for R-Dog WPC MPUs. Some R-Dog boards must have the address bits shifted + and that doesn't line up with the smaller RAM.
I see a 62256 in your picture which fits the nvram mem size of FM18(w)08.

Exactly, and this is why I am confused I guess, lol. I have read that a resistor and jumper is needed and others say, no it is drop in regardless of RAM installed and now reading that address bits need shifted. I may just go with the battery box for now until I can get and answer from RD. I appreciate all the input.

Heck, it's Christmas and I have new Ramtron FM1808 chips sitting in a parts bin...if the OP wants one I'll send you one for $8 this will cover my cost of the part plus shipping to your location! PM me if interested.

I will take it! I will send you a PM. Thank you - Merry Christmas!
