Quoted from skristof:St.Louis? MAke sure you hit the city museum. There are a couple old pins in there, but the place is a MUST for a totally unique experience.
+1 on this idea. This place can make even the most cynical old timer feel like a kid.
Quoted from Methos:Has anyone else done the Route 66 trip before? I have always been interested in doing it, but heard it isn't as rewarding as some make it out to believe.
...and RD - safe travels.
I'd say the Route 66 today is more about exploration. Sorry for sounding like a postcard, but it's about the journey not necessarily the destination. You have to be willing to get out and talk to people. Appreciate the changing landscapes and even the different cultures. Things in New Mexico are just different than things in Illinois. A lot of the old geegaws and roadside attractions are gone or have fallen into disrepair, but there is still adventure out there if you're willing to look for it. If you just stick to the old route and drive with your head down you're probably going to have a bad time. It's the type of trip where you get back whatever you're willing to put into it.
