I just saw Rogue One today in 3D with my brother, dad, FIL, and two boys (7&10).

I honestly thought it would be a poorly done cash grab since we pretty much know how it will go from the beginning. But, it was really well done, and the whole final situation was amazing. My boys didn't like the ending because of the main characters, but it was quite a final 10 seconds in that movie.

FA on the other hand felt like a setup for the next movies. It was enjoyable to watch, but very safe.

    Quoted from Trekkie1978:

I loved Force Awakens. I absolutely hated Rogue One.
The first 75 or so minutes of Rogue One actually made me not care about Star Wars. That is impossible to do, because I am programmed to only care about Star Wars (don't let my pinside name fool you).
Where to begin? What makes a Star Wars movie a Star Wars movie? Opening crawl...missing. Star Wars theme found throughout the music...missing. Wilhelm scream...missing. Wipes...missing. I have a bad feeling about this...95% of the line made it into the movie. Already, for the little things that add up, for the most part are completely missing from the movie.
The story itself...extremely weak. Wife gets killed, so the father decides to help the Empire...huh? Why? I thought the death star leader was very explicit when he said "We can't build this without you." So then why help at all? In Episode 2, the plans seemed to be complete, hence Count Dooku holding on to them. Then at the end of 3, construction on the death star is already underway.
The father - daughter story line added what exactly? It added absolutely nothing to the movie. Gyn wants nothing to do with Cassian because he didn't kill her father. YET, the Rebellion who did kill her father, she pleads with them to fight.
The purposely designed flaw in the death star...To help the rebels, daddy Erso left a design flaw in the Death Star. All the Rebels needed to do was break in, steal the plans, then analyze the plans to find the weakness, then send small ships against the death star to hit an exhaust port that is 2 meters wide...Remember, it is a shot that a computer can't hit. Luke was only able to hit the shot because of the Force. So while this plot line is playing out through the movie, all I could think was if Edwards has ever actually seen Star Wars.
Let's look at the Rebellion. They actually had a meeting about giving up. Are you kidding me? Then the one lady actually asks "Do you mean we are going to war?" Um...hello...the very first line of the crawl to 4 reads "It is a period of Civil War." Then there's the conversation with Luke and C3PO during his oil bath, where C3PO talks about the Rebellion against the Empire. And how they have been in several battles.
Let's go to the last battle. It was a direct ripoff of Jedi in how they land on the planet. I'm still waiting for the SPIES to steal the plans. All we saw was a robbery. Opening crawl of 4 was very clear when it said "Rebel spies steal the plans to the death star." As I said, I'm still waiting for the spies. Then there's the ramming of one star destroyer into another cutting it in half...really?? Just because you have the technology to do something, doesn't mean you should.
Let's talk about Vader. The first Vader scene, he is taking a bath. Something I never thought I would ever describe Vader doing. Then, he uses a pun. Something I never thought I would ever describe Vader doing. So in a matter in 90 seconds, 2 things that I never thought we would see...we saw. I thought it was made 100% clear that Vader's suit is what keeps him alive...so when he takes off his suit to take a bath, he can stay alive...whatever. His 2nd scene was 100% Star Wars porn. Lucas made a mistake by not showing us that Vader in 3. That scene of him taking down the rebels coupled with 4, makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Opening of 4, he lets the storm troopers do all the work.
Follow along: Vader watches Tantive IV fly away. in 4, he says "Several transmissions were sent to this ship. I want to know what happen to the plans they sent you." Then Leia says "I don't know what you're talking about..." To which Vader should've said "What do you mean? I watched you fly away...you can't fool me." But no, we get none of that. Instead, a few seconds later Vader says "I have traced the Rebel spies to her, now she is my only link to finding the Rebel base." I didn't see any tracing in Rogue One. I saw Vader watch her fly away. Secondly, in Rogue One, Vader is on a Rebel ship with higher ups on it. Looks like he has more than 1 link to finding the Rebel base.
The word "hope." How many times was it used in this movie? Way overplayed.
What on earth is what all of those easter eggs? Talk about taking the focus off of your movie.
The characters. The only character I cared about was KS2O. Sorry, but if a droid is the only character I could care about...then you did something seriously wrong.
The 2 Chinese guys...what was their purpose? They didn't add anything interesting to the story. They were just there.
The Forest Whitacre character...he added nothing to the movie.
Death troopers...protection for the higher ups...yet, nowhere to be found in the original trilogy. All the different TIE fighter designs? What??? TIE Advance was designed to counter the X-Wings.
So let's start rating the movie:
    Script: D
    Music: F
    Characters: F
    Story: F
Ability to tie into Star Wars: F
    Special Effects: A+
Tarkin & Leia special effect: F
I lay 100% of the blame on Gareth Edwards. What he did to Godzilla, he did to Star Wars. Please keep this man as far away from Star Wars as possible.

Mon Mothma says in IV that many Bothans died to bring them the plans. The ending of R1 didn't have anyone resembling a Bothan from what I read years ago.

IV tells you how to write the script of R1. I do get a kick out of how I-III and R1 seem to have ships with better tech than what IV has.

Oh, and why are none of the capitol ships shooting at each other in R1? Ackbar knew (will know?) how a gunfight was supposed to go.
