Hi all! I am excited to share this first episode of a very exciting project. These will still be uploaded and sent out through the Coast 2 Coast Pinball Feed, so keep that in your podcast player. These interviews that Roger is sharing now are a treasure to pinball history. So glad I could help bring them to life in podcast form.

Episode 1 - An Evening with Harry Williams
In the first episode of the series, Nate Shivers talks to Roger Sharpe about his long unheard interviews with some of the all time greats in the pinball business.

Roger interviews famed pinball designer and inventor Harry Williams in 1975. They discuss Harry's long and amazing career working in pinball and the coin-op field. Not to be missed!

In the mid 1970's, while working on material for his acclaimed book, Pinball!, Roger Sharpe interviewed many of the greatest luminaries in the world of pinball. Now, over 40 years later, we have a chance to hear these rare recordings and discuss them with Roger himself.

    Thanks!

Yeah man.. it's almost 80 minutes of him and Roger. The interview was recorded on an old school tape machine, and I did all I could to clean up the audio.. and I have to say... it's such a trip to hear these interviews... so cool. Hope you enjoy.

Spoiler Alert... You can hear the story of the PENDULUM TILT being invented. From the guy who invented it!

Oh, this is going to be right up my alley!

Harry Williams moved pinball forward more than anybody else I can think of. What a creative genius the man truly was.

    #8 4 years ago

Wow...mind blown! Thank you! This is like hearing Moses speak.

Awesome work! Thanks for doing this awesome project!

I remember Josh saying a few years back that these tapes existed. Really excited that they're seeing the light of day.
Thank so much to Roger for sharing them and thanks to Nate for getting them out to the folks.

    #12 4 years ago

Very cool stuff! Thanks for making the effort to bring these to light. The history that goes along with this hobby is what keeps me going!

    Thanks

Very VERY delighted that Roger Sharpes archieve is being preserved and shared with us. Don't worry too much about the sound quality. It is not degrading anything to the content. And sometimes processing becomes too excessive. It is great.

    Thanks, Nate and Roger.

    #14 4 years ago

Wanted to also post in this thread that it is great how you and Roger are sharing these treasures with the rest of the community.

Thanks again for all you do and looking forward to the next episodes.

    #15 4 years ago

This is fantastic. Truly enjoyed hearing Harry Williams speak about his early career in pinball and the many devices he pioneered. What an absolute treat.

I can't wait to hear more.

    Thank you, Nate and Roger!

The NYT feature Roger wrote and mentions in this interview is at https://www.nytimes.com/1975/12/28/archives/ping-boing-buzz-tilt-pinball-machines-are-moving-into-family-rooms.html

December 1972 is the Playboy article, but it's behind a paywall: https://www.iplayboy.com/search?query=pinball

Whenever someone complains about about a pinsider calling a machine a “table” they should be referred to this interview.

Thanks c2c & the Sharpe fam.

    #19 4 years ago

That was cool !! Keep em coming!!

I can listen to Roger for hours!!

    Great job Nate !

Episode 2 - An Evening with Sam Stern

Roger interviews Sam Stern, founder of Stern Electronics, who at one time was part owner and served as President of Williams Manufacturing Company. Sam is the father of Gary Stern, the Founder and CEO of Stern Pinball. Sam's experience and success as an operator, distributor and most importantly, manufacturer in pinball has undeniably left a lasting impression on the industry.

This interview took place in Sam's office at Williams in 1975.

In the mid 1970's, while working on material for his acclaimed book, Pinball!, Roger Sharpe interviewed many of the greatest luminaries in the world of pinball. Now, over 40 years later, we have a chance to hear these rare recordings and discuss them with Roger himself.

Thanks for doing these, they make interesting listening!

In the Sam Stern one, when they discuss “pinball in the home”, I think by “cheating angles” Sam is referring to tilt bobs, slam tilt switches and anti lift mechs, as he says “home owners aren’t going to cheat themselves”

These are neat to listen to. You get some insight into the names and faces behind pinball past that made pinball what it is today. Hopefully none of rogers tapes are lost to history. i think even releasing these interviews here he still could do a book about pinball then and now. Shouldn't be hard for roger to get interviews with current people and bs about the past in pinball if he needs more to fill a book. Yes his past in pinball has been posted here and there in bits and pieces that could be reassembled. Just getting him talking about revisiting these is enjoyable. Adding pictures of the games discussed in each interview. I was jumping on pinball database just to put images to the games harry was talking about.

    #23 4 years ago

Thank you to you and Roger for sharing these historical pinball interviews. Right up there with TopCast for me.

    #24 4 years ago

when we played again at pinburgh you told me you had something cool coming up.

no idea it would be this awesome.

    thanks nate and roger

    #25 4 years ago

I'm loving these series! Besides the great historical interview in each one is the always interesting interview you do with Roger where he talks about what was going on in his life at that time and his thoughts on the interview.

Thank you to those involved in this project

    #26 4 years ago

Initial thoughts on the Harry Williams interview: energetic, passionate, sounding person whom I wish I could have met.

I was especially struck by the story of the young man who invented the free play unit - that one caught me off guard. I was listening along and went "say what?, what happened to him??"

I had to listen to that bit a second time just to let it soak in - really sad

Initial thoughts on the Sam Stern interview: Someone to be respected, he knew his stuff.

I liked the sounds of the office - the dialing and later the ringing of the telephone.

I also liked Rogers thoughts on going to the Williams plant. That really got my imagination going on what it would be like to experience that scale of production.

Thank you Mr Shivers for doing such a amazing job on these priceless interviews.
The intro's with Roger, are just as good as the interviews.

    I still miss old Coast2Coast.

Still laughing at " You don't live in California. "

Good to hear Mr. Sharpe sounding hale and hearty on the recent super awesome pinball show!

Slightly unrelatedly, this nudist from an old Kenny vs. Spenny episode called to mind RS.

I missed this whole thing, I would like to listen to all of them too. I hope they get reuploaded somewhere

    #39 1 year ago

    Thread bump.

I was also hoping to listen to the Sam Stern and Harry Williams interview, but the links are dead. Do these live anywhere now?

    #40 1 year ago

Would love to hear them...anyone have them?

    #41 1 year ago

I hope someone saved them. The Harry Williams interview was hard to listen to recording wise, but had some really interesting stuff from the man himself

    #42 1 year ago

I sent a PM requesting a re-up, lets hope that works!

    #43 1 year ago

It's not just the RS interviews, all the C2C episodes are unavailable. I'm guessing Podcastgarden deletes stuff based on traffic and age.
ifpapinball knows RS pretty well, I'd say reach out to him or Nate and ask about hosting them somewhere. Google drive might be adequate for current traffic.

I dug up a few dozen C2C episodes from the archives and will be uploading more tonight. There are ten so far, including the Sam Stern tape here:

I'll update this thread when I get more up.

I have finished all episodes I can find and renamed some of the episodes already up to give some clarity. Here's what is up:

    C2C2 (resized).jpgC2C2 (resized).jpg

    C2C1 (resized).jpgC2C1 (resized).jpg

The filenames can only be so long, so for a lot more info for each episode you can look here:

If any of you have any episodes that aren't on the list and you wish to share, message me and we'll make it happen.

    #48 1 year ago

Thanks to wigwamndn we'll be getting every episode! (Except 1 and 2, which seem lost to the sands of time.) I've just uploaded 3 thru 60, and they can be found here (note: the files aren't in perfect order, but the episode numbers are accurate):

    https://app.mediafire.com/0ieigung3w43v

I'm not about to rename them all, so check here for episode specifics:
