When i saw this on ebay i could not resist, I love Rockola Pintables, this will make three now and possibly the easiest to rebuild. My Jigsaw world fair plays really well, all cleaned and restored, I have left the playfield alone although somebody has had a go at it not very well i must say. Back tothe Wings the picture below show the state it is in now. I completely stripped out all of the interior, these machines look like they were built starting with the cabinet and then everything was inserted and nailed in place, took a longtime to work it out and very carefully removing each piece of wood. Loads of dust etc after all these years but i think it has helped keep the playfield in not bad shape do not intend to touch playfield up just carefully clean. The cabinet will go to a local door stripping company. NO caustic solution stripping here, will fine sand and depending on the wood may stain, the existing cabinet has had 3 or 4 coats of varnish over the years, saw an absolutely stunning wings on the web the wood looked like mahogany but i think its the usual american oak that rockola seemed to use, but i may be wrong. Anybody who has one of these machines please post anything that may help.

yes before pinballs they were call pintables because the ball would traverse the playfield by hitting steel pins just like the old kids bagatelle games. Below is my restored rockola world fair jigsaw and you can see the pins the balls would hit. Note some pins are missing on the lower right side need to put them back in if i can find them.

Update
Started cleanup ands its looking good. The spinner in the middle of the playfield is solid so a dip then a fine sand blast this week and we will see next week what its like. Really pleased with the playfield after nearly 80 years.
Queston If you look closely at the playfield pictures so can see what looks like a 1/4 inch border, reminds me of the transfer that were used on porcelean could rockola used transfers i would not of thought they would or is it a side effect of the screen print.

Things are moving a pace now nearly finished. Have got some problems with the ball lift noway as good as the later rockola machines but I am sure to come up with a solution. I was going to completely refurbish the cabinet and french polish but decided just to stain and varnish leaving some of the dents, scratches and where someone had tried to rob the coin box by leveraging on the wooden front. Also applied stain in various densities to get some age i think it looks great not like its come straight from the factory but like a machine thats been looked after for 88 years hope i look as good when i am that age. Hope you liked my effort at bringing this rare machine back to life.

To do
1) figure out how the ball lift should work
2) get the coin slide stripped and polished i think it will look great
3) get the shooter working needs a stronger spring
4) Consider making the legs and support

Have a play with my new toy, before starting on my rockola world series.

Update Coin slide back from stripping and does it look good. I have not repaired the damage where someone has tried to break in.

Here is my ball trough and ball delivery mechanism. I still think i have something missing as I cannot get the balls to lift. Balls just fill the lift mechanism.

Hi, thanks i now no what i need to do. Also there is an anti cheat very similar to later rockola world fair. Ita rod that sits underneath the ball trough and gets pushed up to lock the balls when the coin shoot is inserted fully just link later machines. Only my world fair has an anti cheat at present. Also on the bottom of the cabinet underneathe the shaft was a lump of rubber, it had completely disintegrated. So i think this has 2 functions
1) to custion the ball lift lever when its released
2) to stop that block falling out
I will replace with a piece of eraser rubber, there is a screw hole right underneath where that would sit.

Well here is my version i made nowhere like what it should be but it works. I also have a small piece of rubber at the base of the ball shute to cushion the lever.

We have liftoff. Wings has taken flight.
Yes it works.

Minor mods required - I have a rockola return string installed as per later machines which means the shooter rod is a little short but i have some silver steel and will make up another shooter, the wire gates i am not convinced are correct since the ball will flip them right over.
Jeff so we now have 2 Rockola Wings working, at least yours is 100% orginal.

Great News found the missing piece for the ball lift in a box of spares for ball bingos. Do not know how it got in there.
