I have a similar problem with my Roadshow, specifically with the SM-31-900-DC coil on Ted. The old coil was totally burnt up and had even melted. When I power on my Roadshow the new coil drags down the plunger and closes the eyes (good), which means the new coil and power works. However, the coil is stuck on and will obviously either blow a fuse and/or melt again. I have not allowed the game to have power on for more than like 3 seconds tops. Since I can hear the coil is stuck on.

So, there is a problem with my machine. When I bought it even parts in the Ted head was missing, I now have all the parts, but since there is so much job with removing and re-adding the head I obvisously need to test this first.

There is no sleeve and there is ridiculously much space for the plunger, guess that is what it is....

It looks like there has been work done by previous owners, which means I can't even trust what's currently mounted/wired.

Can anyone send me similar pictures and/or confirm wiring from my attached image?!

Some findings from earlier posts in thic topic :
* Q54 may be the problem (or any of the components in the zoomed in schematics)
* r90
* r91
* r92
* r93
* d22
* 47LS274 U4?

All help is much appreciated!

Ted now seems to work, i replaced the Components on the image as well the large capacitors and all 5 br’s while at it, all on the power board.

The q54 (tip 102) was bad (confirmed), i also replaced q53 even though it measured good.

It’s not easy to get a connection top side on the large capacitors even though i have flux, needed to add extra wires on the backside to get a solid connection on c5, c7 and c9.

Now next step Will be to remove everything on the playfield, have a new plastic kit, rubbers,posts many hours still needed...

Quoted from pinballplusMN:

In the past ive added a 1.5 amp slo blow fuse near the head assy on the power side that feeds the coils for the eyes. Just one fuse for the head power.Sometimes springs, links break inside the head and short on the little coils. The coil energizes and locks on but does not draw enough current to blow the 3 amp fuse on the driver board until more severe damage has been done such as burnt traces etc. Ive seen a few of these driver boards with holes burnt in them due to a failed coil in rudys or teds head. A small investment to save your driver board.

Great tip! I will make sure to add this to my heads!

Previous owners have NOT had proper solder knowledge, and some components were really badly mounted, with injuries to cables, components and traces. All fixed now...
