Road Show Switch Matrix (resized).PNG
#1 3 years ago

I just finished a gorgeous restoration of a Road Show and I'm now seeing random(approx. 1 in 20 times) slam-tilts when I hit the yellow stand-up (83). I previously saw some unusual behavior where the start button was triggering several switches, however I cannot reproduce that issue and don't recall what was being triggered...

I'm not versed in matrix troubleshooting, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had this happen on my AFM ... problem was a stuck target switch that stayed engaged!
Good luck

That’s a tough one because they are not on the same column or row. I would suspect a shorted diode at 21, 23, 81 or 83 except that I would think two of those switches would need to be closed at the same time you hit the standup, and they don’t look like the type of switches that would be closed. Still worth checking those four switches for shorts or a bad diode.

Also, if one of those switches is stuck closed and there’s a shorted diode, then maybe that could be the cause. As I said, check all four closely.

Ok, I'm an idiot. I transposed the white and yellow targets during reassembly... I need to read directly off the menu and not look at the color of the target. So that places the issue on row 1. Is "Trough Jam" normally closed?

So what’s the issue that’s happening then? Start over please.

I think I figured it out, I had rebuilt the red stand-up (82) backwards; the diode and wire plates were reversed. That, along with a closed coin door (22), was causing the white stand-up (81) to trigger the slam tilt (21). I've never trouble-shot a matrix before but I believe I have the issue resolved. Thanks for the help everyone!

Ah, got it. Glad you figured it out. There’s a great video about the switch matrix and diodes if you search for “Terry B switch matrix diode pinball” or something similar in YouTube.
