got tired of reading post debating world situations in a thread that i thought would be a good read and such. But once i saw the prices for routed games, my mind changed since obviously he doesnt want to sell 95% of them

I do wish he was a little more motivated. 20 games or sale for sale 8 blocks from me would be nice to pick something up.

Let’s just stand around and whistle Dixie and have small business funerals and do nothing about it except watch it burn.

Is anyone allowed to actually whistle Dixie anymore?? I thought they political correct, cancel culture lefties have made that a no no

    Quoted from radium:

I’m a federal contractor and have been working with COVID data forecasting since April and I can tell you if you think any of these “experts” or models are accurate, think again. A lot of it is about money. There’s massive dollars flying around right now and it’sa total feeding frenzy.

The minute they reimbursed hospitals extra for COVID patients that door was kicked wide open.

Every swinging dick is working on a vaccine which in all likelihood will end up being a flu shot facsimile if we are lucky, given that coronavirus vaccines have never worked. There's a lot of money to be made on that side of it and someone, or more accurately quite a few someones, will make it. We'll be told to get back to "normal" we'll have to take it. I'm not some anti vaxxer. I'll take any vaccine they can come up with. I just have major doubts it's going to be the cure they're hanging their hats on. It probably will help the virus burn out at some point when it runs really low on hosts to infect or it will mutate to a less virulent state like all the other cold viruses running around out there. But it's not going to be a polio or smallpox vaccine that confers long term immunity to where we get it once and we're done for ages. I think if people are waiting and hoping for that before they decide to live life again, they're in for a long, long wait.

I still think this issue has been attacked backwards. To me it would have been way better to attack this from the treatment side. Understand that it's out there and people are going to get it and let's concentrate on palliative treatments to less the severity of it when people do inevitably get it. When you look at the figures there's tons more money being spent on vaccines than there is on possible treatments via existing medicines. Get the treatment down first then go hard at the vaccine. It's the same thing as HIV. They went hard for a vaccine and it never happened, and eventually they figured the treatment. In the meantime a lot of people died.

We could get back to normal a hell of a lot faster understanding the infection is going to happen and working our asses off on treatments than trying to lessen it by hiding at home while a highly speculative at best vaccine is worked on. I saw a statement by a virologist I believe it was that is the most truthful I've seen in this whole thing. The lockdowns don't really prevent the deaths. They just change the dates of them.

this might be the best most logical post I have seen on pinside in a while. shutting things down was not smart. 15 days to slow the curve turned into 110 days for some states. All it is doing is delaying herd immunity.

It sadness me to see such a great place with wonderful people associated have to walk away from their dream and well a place many sought to enjoy on a regular basis. I don't care what region you are in or the theories of others on what caused what. Thanks to all associated with keeping a great location for the silver ball on the map for over 6 years. It was a pleasure to visit many times while were in NYC as a family. I had made a few good memories there with my oldest daughter. Hopefully other sites will be able to keep the location play alive in NYC and surrounding. I know many businesses are suffering in my industry, I hope they can pull through. There are some good posts around about people's experiences at places just like modern. I've been thanking a lot of people lately for supporting myself and the businesses we have that are still open to some capacity. We all, in coin op, appreciate everything. Good luck to all involved with modern in the future, hope to see you guys resurface when the time is right. Best, Chris Meyers, Starport/Helicon Brewing

Damn, Damn, Damn! Sorry to see Modern has closed. Modern Pinball operated as a museum, requiring payment for entry at the door. They also listed prices on their pins so that one could be purchased at any time. Iron Man, POTC and LOTR were titles that cycled through their doors quickly and were never replaced. Punchy the Clown was always listed for $1M. That was obviously a joke because it was clearly not worth more than $900k, and it never sold. It might be cheaper now.

Steve (rip) and Steve and Al and Francesco and Eddie were a great group of men and I enjoyed visiting Modern for many years. They got me into competitive pinball, the pins were well maintained, staff was professional and the place was so full of life. it was full of enthusiasts and first timers.

    #128 3 years ago

how you gonna have a three page thread about modern pinball without so much as a mention of the mad hatter next door? were you all drinking airline bottles in the unisex bathroom?

going to miss this place, and as a result, the bombardiers from the mad hatter next door.

fuck. just saw they permanently closed, too.

Make no mistakes people, Midtown Manhattan (and most of NYC) are drastically safer than any of “safe midwestern suburbs”. There is overwhelming data to prove that. Sure every part of the country has an underbelly, and statistically speaking the underbellies of cities are far shadowed by the underbellies of the rest of the country.

Modern had to close due to the lease being up in combination with the economics of it not being feasible. Not looting, not vandalism, not rioting or violent crime. The risk that cities face right now is that the density is NOT helpful for the economic stability of any business there. No doubt they are being SLAMMED due to the shutdown. What it should tell us is that a large majority of businesses run on an incredibly small profit margin. Airlines to hotels to bars to arcades. Being kind and supporting these businesses in any time we can is without a doubt what we should all be joining together to do, whether it be through legislation or donating money where we can.

And as time goes by. The trend will continue. As money from the government runs out. Businesses running at less capacity. A lot of people just aren't going out for entertainment like they used to. A grim future coming up.
Hard to imagine where we'll be at a year from now.
    LTG : (

It’s not just entertainment. Retail is being destroyed, both small and large. And that destroys small manufacturers. I’ve already decided to put my businessinto hibernation, but have the problem of dealing with 2 of the largest entertainment companies in the world, and they are scared out of their minds. Things are going to get very mean-spirited and capricious by the end of the summer when banks, landlords and large corporations desperately start trying to get anything they can from smaller vendors and tenants.

    That’s not exactly correct.
Hogs generally travel in a passel or drove. You will get verying sizes in the group ranging from piglets to some that are several hundred pounds. Yes, the larger hogs are not choice for eating, but small to medium size are quite good.
I hunt white tail in Uvalde a couple hours from where iceman lives and when we see hogs we shoot em. The land owner wants them gone.
They are a non native evasive species that is an environmental disaster in this country.
That said, they are still good for eating.
I use a butcher in Uvalde that makes fantastic boar sausage out of them.
Have my own sausage maker, but a good butcher in Texas that does this year round really knows what he’s doing and does it better than I can.
Also, the ribs are great for smoking and grilling.

This is the dumbest bunch of shit ...

1)”density NOT helpful for economic stability”....so more potential customers isn’t going to help a business get more business? This makes no sense. Higher density makes any business plan more attractive to lending institutions. Obviously, someone didn’t take any economics classes in their life.

    2) “being kind and supporting business ... through legislation or donating money”
WTF!!?? How about “you give me a product or a service and I give you money for it” instead?
Where does the money come from for your “legislation”? It’s from taxes collected in said exchanges of products for money.
Donation? “Hey! Your burger joint is shut down, and I’m hungry. But hell....here’s $20 for no burger because it’s a donation to keep your family fed, while my belly grumbles??”

    3) “ the lease was up”. This is the best one...”hey, I’m making money hand over fist but my lease is up, so I’m gonna pack up shop and go home. It has nothing to do with the fact that my customers are prevented from coming to my arcade and they are afraid to walk down the street with cash in their pocket after the police are now gone”

Keep trying to invent new ways to justify your support of tyranny and anarchy. My popcorn bowl is big and the cupboards are well stocked with Orville Reddenbacher.... gotta say watching NYC burn won’t break my heart.

    Long live Iceman!!!!

Generally speaking it’s the best cut from any animal. That and the tenderloin.

    Quoted from bigd1979:

Wow.. so many arcades and small businesses in general are closing. Unfortunately this is just the start of the small business downturn due to this horrible year so far. So sad and I hope something changes or can be done very soon to save the ones left.

Unfortunately, if it were not the virus it is often something else with small businesses. I know a lot of people that have struggled to consistently make decent money running their own businesses and some failed multiple times. Of the ones I know, the number of successful ones is probably about 25% despite being in upper middle class areas.

"According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 20 percent of small businesses fail within their first year. By the end of their fifth year, roughly 50 percent of small businesses fail. After 10 years, the survival rate drops to approximately 35 percent."
