Some local pinsiders: Badbrick, Kniessl and I decided a few months ago to start work on a Rick & Morty pinball machine. Our plan is to build 3 of them, one for each of us.

The focus of the pin will be on as much technology as we can stuff into the game, including some fun plans like a new backbox design etc...

We don't really have any cool details to show yet, because we are still just going through concepts, but we would love to know if anyone has any ideas or must-haves for the game.

The soundtrack has been amazing, and there are so many cool things we can include so far, here are just a small sampling of the things we are tossing around.

    - Gear wars
    - Portal gun w/subways for portal travel
    - Tiny rick
    - Keep Summer Safe
    - Roy / Blitz and Chits
    - Purge
    - Squanchy

Some of the call outs we've assembled so far are:

    - End game call out: From season 2 final episode wedding speech: "...in the end we all die alone"
    - Gear Wars: The thing people don’t realize about the Gear Wars is that it wasn’t really about the gears.
    - Abradolph Lincler: Prepare to be emancipated from your own inferior genes!
    - Squanchy: How bout a taste of my squanch?
    - Tilt warning: In bird culture, this is considered a dick move.
    - Ball Save: You appear to be dying. I will make efforts to prevent this, but can promise nothing.

Let's hear what you think would make a good addition to the game!

    Quoted from Erik:

Does this mean my Spaceballs will be delayed?

Not really. I'm in a holding pattern with Spaceballs until after November, so we've been kicking around some ideas for Rick & Morty. I've got some upgrades to do to the CNC router, so the whole machine has to come down so I can work on the table that it sits on. It's delaying the next step in Spaceballs, which is to cut v4 of the playfield.

Fleshing out a lot of the design of modes and things on the R&M playfield first makes designing it a lot easier. Trying to learn from my mistakes on Spaceballs.

Love the ideas, keep them coming!

    #43 7 years ago

    I love the ideas!!!!

Thanks for all the enthusiasm. We hope to put together a really cool game. Even if someone else did one or a big company did, ours is from a different dimension.

Keep the ideas coming, I'm extracting them all out into a document that I'll paste back once it's more cohesive.

Check out what toyotaboy contributed to the project!! It's an LCD TV mod modeled after the TV in the Interdimensional Cable 2 episode.

It plays clips from the interdimensional shows. So badass!!! Little bitsss.....

Holy cow! I love all the ideas!

Sorry for the radio silence on my end, I've been on vacation for the past 2 weeks and haven't really been near a computer.

You guys aren't going to believe the thing Toyotaboy sent me. I'm gonna take some video tonight. It's amazing!!!!

    Quoted from joshmans:

I've been working on a few homebrew projects for a while, but recently picked up a Ticket Tac Toe playfield that I'm considering retheming to "BLIPS AND CHITZ"

Dude this is awesome!!!! Maybe we can get them both side by side at a show or something in the future!!

More to come as I completely catch up on this thread and everything from the past 2 weeks.

    Quoted from jayhawkai:

If this takes off, you can offer a stripped down version, like Stern's The Pin, where the only objective is to pass butter.

You can submit your application at the Gazorpazorp Center for Pinball Applications.

From the genius mind of toyotaboy, he created a sweet ass interdimensional cable box to go on the game. One of the coolest things I've seen in a while.

    He modeled it after this:

    Rick-and-Morty-S02E08-Rick-Interdimensional-Cable-2 (resized).jpgRick-and-Morty-S02E08-Rick-Interdimensional-Cable-2 (resized).jpg

I made a quick video of it plugged in and running. This thing is awesome!!!

It's a super busy season right now for me, BadBrick and Kneissl. I think we are aiming to get together the week after christmas and go through some playfield ideas.

Kneissl, BadBrick and I got together last night to talk Rick & Morty.

I think we came up with some cool ideas that I'm going to start putting into CAD. I'll post some pics as I get things in over the next couple of weeks.

Here's a short list of some of the things we decided:

    - 3 flippers (excluding mini playfields)
    - No LCD - RGB DMD only
    - Interactive backbox game
    - Dynamic lower playfield under a window and a mini playfield up at the top.
    - Subway system
    - Multiple playfield displays
    - OLED targets and inserts

    #127 7 years ago
    Quoted from toyotaboy:

Can it be a double height DMD?

Is there a compelling reason for it? There are going to be a LOT of screens doing things on this, if you include the OLEDs and playfield LCDs.

    Quoted from toyotaboy:

Are you doing b&w or color OLED because there's quite a price difference.

We hadn't really gotten that far. In my mind it was all color, but maybe price will play a factor in it. Not all inserts will be OLED, just select ones.

    1 week later
    #133 7 years ago
    Quoted from GotAQuestion:

INSERT SIZED SCREENS. Holy crap that's innovative. How has that not been done before? I usually dislike chunky screens right in the center of the playfield but this idea is awesome.

Lots of fun stuff like that in the plans.

    1 month later
    #137 7 years ago

Nothing worth posting. I've been slowly putting in CAD time to get the basics all in before we start with the fun stuff.

Turns out that's the wrong year, too. It was a promo vid for season 2, not season 3. :/

Wolfmarsh and friends haven't done anything on Rick and Morty lately, AFAIK. Wolf is busting butt to get spaceballs in a playable state for SFGE.

LOL, as far as Kneissl knows. He is one of the builders, he knows.

He is right though, we haven't done anything lately because of my push to get Spaceballs ready. After SFGE I think we will have a lot more time to start messing with it.

    #173 6 years ago
    Quoted from toyotaboy:

Will there be a Shoney's or schezwan sauce spinner?

There's no doubt season 3 will have an impact on the machine, I'm kinda glad we don't have a ton laid out yet.

As always I love your ideas. Keep them coming.

We are definitely doing the LED ring idea, but we hadn't considered doing it on the playfield, that sounds awesome. We are planning to do an ice cold beer type of game in the backbox, and were hoping to use something almost identical to your mockup for the lit ring around the holes.

I love the idea of using them on the playfield too.

The targets with OLED displays are a definite. I've been experimenting with using the displays as the actual targets too, and how to best protect them.

In my head, this game has to have no technological expense spared, it's what Rick would do.

    Quoted from fisherdaman:

I hope not. I'd rather Jersey Jack or worst case scenario.. Stern. A Rick and Morty game needs toys on toys on toys on toys.

It also needs technology out the ass. OLED displays everywhere, everything RGB, amazing sound, etc....

This game can't be skimped on. We are already putting an Ice Cold Beer style game in the backbox, lol.

There's no reason Spooky can't make a $10k game. They just haven't chosen to yet.

    Quoted from mcluvin:

I just want whoever designs this pin to love the show.

I know @badbrick, Kneissl and I are superfans. Myself especially. I literally have every word from every episode memorized, and have watched every episode at least 20 or 30 times at this point.

We will do our damnedest to make this game bring R&M to life.

What if someone from the show is watching this thread? It's one thing to have something slightly resembling a pinball at blips n chitz, it's another to have 2 pinballs machines in a strip club of all places.

That would be amazing. I hope what we are doing makes them smile and laugh.

The winter build season is almost upon us, and I'll begin bringing ideas for this game from digital to physical.

    Quoted from VacFink:

This show is so rich, i've been wondering how anyone would distill it down to a playfield and it got me thinking, so thought it might be fun to share what I came up with.
It will be interesting to see how you guys take that on.
I would think that you need to distill it down into basic themes and repeating plot points as launching points, for example
A portal could be the launching point into any 'adventure line' Characters on the play field could be advance activators to the 'adventure'. The ship, could be the default 'escape' path, with the house as the launching point for most subplot modes either standalone or within the adventure story line.
Things like the citadel IMO seems like the capstone as the hard to hit jackpot.
    Other interesting components
The flask, it might be a good repeat and build point on the playfield. Hit repeatedly to fill and drain, as a build up to key Rick actions.
The garage, might be something of a subway or lock, a place to change play, since its here a lot of plots either find their change point and its the repository of most of the devices, which are key in story lines (modes)
There are probably a million ways to eat this elephant but that seems like one structure for a layout that could allow inserting the great plot and character points in all of the episodes and modes.
    Its an fun thought exercise.

    These are great ideas!!!

I think we are thinking along very similar lines, but you have some better details that we will incorporate for sure. One of the big aspects I'm trying to work into this is a lot of moving things on the playfield, that uncover other things. Shots that can vary based on what is going on and where they feed the ball. I think that brings into play a decent number of cool elements: subways, ramps w/diverters or ramps that can move, trap doors, etc...

I learned a lot with Spaceballs and I'm ready to take that to the next logical level with R&M.

The only platform that could get close to representing the countless realities etc would have to be Multimorphic's P3.

I couldn't do what I am planning to do with the P3, unfortunately.

It would be very neat for a graphic intensive version of a Rick & Morty game though!

    #367 6 years ago
    Quoted from Frax:

wolfmarsh Bro, I owe you a sort of apology, I guess. I didn't look at the first post before I posted (nice job, idiot!), didn't realize this was an actual ongoing project, not just a thread of "damn I hope someone makes this theme"! If you're building it.. then hell yeah, go for it!
I'm going to get around to watching more of the show, but *see above* yeah....running car...for a packet of.....nugget sauce....... /facepalm

Naw man, I don't take any offense to that stuff. I too dislike how far people can take it in the name of being "fans". The car for the szechuan sauce is ridiculous, and obviously was just done to get 5 minutes of fame. Same with the guy screaming like a lunatic at McDonalds.

These are the same people that smoke one joint and start slapping 420 stickers on everything and wearing hemp clothing.

I love Rick & Morty in the way that I can repeat every line and describe every visual/scene. I won't however go stand in line for a packet of sauce, lol. It was a joke in the show and they should have left it at that. McDonald's did the sauce release without even letting the show know beforehand.

We are definitely building this game, it's just been a slow start. Going to be wrapping up Spaceballs over the next 3-6 months and then we will start to do some of the physical construction on Rick & Morty. Space is a big constraint for me.

    Quoted from docquest:

So I was at the RI Comicon today and got a chance to meet Justin Roiland. I asked if he was a pinball fan since he had some pins in "Morty-ville" in an episode this season.
He said he loves pinball and said would love to have a Rick and Morty based pinball game. He said they've been approached by a few manufacturers. I don't think he was kidding because I mentioned the name of one of them and he said "yeah that was one of them". Not saying it will actually happen but at least we know it has been discussed by the powers that be.

I believe the company you are thinking of already has purchased the license.

Won't stop us though. Wubba lubba dub dub!

    any update on this pin?

It's been a busy winter for the project team, so we haven't done much on it unfortunately other than digital design and some prototyping.

My dad is a scale modeler, and does a lot of his work from scratch. While he was here for christmas he taught me some of his molding/casting skills. We worked on the chamber for the top of the portal gun shooter. I've got a lot of work to go still, but here are my first ever attempts at molding/casting. The rick and morty portal gun prop is at the top, and then you can see my 3d printed portal gun body (minus the handle and button), and the castings I did to mess with colorants and additives.

I think you need a Toxic Rick mode that turns all the lights green and then you have to hit a sequence to reverse the change.
    Just a thought....

    Love it.

    #424 6 years ago
    Quoted from Yellowdog:

Wow! Way more complicated than I originally thought but it would be very cool if it could be done. I was thinking that you would have a certain amount of time to hit a couple of targets or clear a set of drop targets to undo the toxic world and turn the lights back to normal.
    ken

I think your idea of hitting the targets to clear it up probably works well enough to get the point across.

The clips and sounds it plays could be from that episode and you progress through it by cleaning up the green targets.
