Unfortunately most buyers outside the pinball hobby community would struggle with the idea of "what do you mean I have to wait almost a year? Why don't you have any for me to buy now?"
And if Spooky allows all their build capacity to be pre-sold and built first... that's exactly what will happen.
They should consider allocating a group of inventory in the mid-to-early run that would be made together as a batch that can be sold via another means not simple pre-order. The value of 'immediately available' would demand a premium, drive the idea of scarcity, and open up other sales channels. If for some reason the games didn't sell.. you could always put them back into the queue of fullfilment for pre-sold games.
This is the negative of pre-selling your allotment.. it hinders what you can do sales wise (or some would argue.. negates the need to do any selling). I'd propose they need a bit of both...
