Figured I’d post this here because it applies to this game too. I use an $8 “bent plastic” DMD glare guard on my Star Wars Episode 1 to eliminate the translite glare from the playfield glass. Lift the translite, insert the guard into the channel and set the translite back in place.

3rd pic show the reflection of the translite on the playfield glass with the guard off.
Last pic shows the glass with the guard on.

A friend picked of a RFM yesterday and dropped it off at my house. I have a SWE1 so I offered to have him drop it off for me to check out - was sitting in storage and couldn't power it on. Needs to have the PC motherboard caps replaced, the green ones are all swelled or leaking except one. Likely need a new CPU as well since the CPU fan doesn't work, so the chip is likely toast.

I swapped in my SWE1 PC and installed the RFM prism card and booted up just fine. Gave us a chance to do switch testing - needs a few microswitches replaced and 3 sets of optos.

But check out this .1 software version. January 26, 1999. Anyone know if this is the very first version? I haven't been able to find a reference earlier than .9 when searching. But anyway, now to research software updating process.

Game does have the slingshot spotlights.

The optos under the left ramp that sense if a ball is locked at the post are not programmed into the game yet on .1 triggering the optos in the switch test returns a switch not used message. One less set of optos to replace.

I used the method on this site to update my software from .1, then to 1.5 and then to 2.21.

Pinbox has been successfully installed on an older PC i had leftover. Now I can take my Star Wars original computer out of the revenge cabinet and back into my Star Wars and have that running again. Next to do is remove the CRT monitor from the revenge cabinet and get the LCD monitor mounted and then get it all connected.

Quoted from mattosborn:

I would start by replacing the heatsink/fan on the CPU.

Couldn't hurt to reseat the RAM chips as well. Make sure that CPU fan is working.

I gotta say, an LCD monitor looks terrific. My CRT is showing its age and I needed to replace the bad original PC anyway. I need to find a cheap 20" LCD with true 4:3 ratio. I have a Dell 19", but it's slightly too small and the ratio is slightly different - 5:3 or 5:4?

My 2007 22" cheapo Walmart monitor is ok, but I'll need something with a better screen than that. But good for testing. Next I need to compare an LCD on my Star Wars that has a very nice CRT.

If you (or anyone else) is looking to get rid of a CRT, I'd love to buy it!

I have the one I just removed from Revenge From Mars. Where are you located?

If he doesn't take it, please let me know.

It’s available. No one has made an offer or contacted me about it. Message me if you’re interested.

When I updated my Pinbox software, I exited to the desktop, opened the file manager, deleted the old files and simply copied the new files to their destination. Is that not an option with NuCore? It's a basic copy and paste as far as I could tell, not sure why an installer app is needed?

#4120 3 years ago

I upgraded just fine yesterday. Deleted, copied and pasted the files in a few minutes and rebooted. Only played one game so I didn’t see the new content. Will get some game time on today for sure.

#4124 3 years ago

Checked mine and it says 1.1. I’m running Pinbox, not original cpu.

Quoted from tomster:

Hmm... from what version did you upgrade?
Did we have to upgrade one version after another, instead of making the big jump at once?

I was at 2.21. My original CPU is bad so I installed the CPU from my Star Wars and updated the RFM Prism card. When I got the game it was on .1, then I upgraded to 1.5.

When I went to Pinbox, it has 1.5 installed already and I then installed 2.21. Then a few days ago went to 2.22.

#4134 3 years ago

I was going to say earlier that regardless of the version displayed, it sounds just fine. Also I was streaming on FB last night for a while and got all my extra balls fine as well.

#4142 3 years ago

Experienced two game freezes this evening with 2.22. Didn’t play a game, just had it turned on and later saw the screen was frozen and all playfield lights off. Turned the system off and on and was sitting nearby reading when I saw it freeze again.

Game freezes I think were PC going into power save for some reason. Never happened before. But exited to desktop and waited and it went blank eventually. Plugged in a mouse and moved it and it came back on. Left a keyboard and mouse plugged into the PC and the game has been on for several hours without issue.

Quoted from Asure:

I pulled the prism and booted w/ VGA. That's odd, CMOS error - Battery low
I checked the battery i replaced and it was at 3.1VDC.. Rebooted, but again CMOS checksum error.
Swapped in a new no-name brand from the wife's Christmas light battery collection and saved bios settings. Rebooted and power cycled but no CMOS errors this time. Set the clock from the menu, and power cycled after saving it. Clock now works!
Side note, the clock font is now in RED and it was in BLUE before, if that's any indication

I didn't know you were using Pinbox/NuCore.
You should get rid of the screensaver using "sudo apt-get remove xscreensaver" from a terminal / ssh session and it will be gone forever.

Screensaver is gone, did that command when I configured pinbox. This never happened before and it happened only after installing 2.22, so thought it was related. Game has been on all day since this morning and hasn’t happened again. Odd.

#4151 3 years ago
Quoted from applejuice:

Please don’t assume crashes are software related. Hardware can go wrong. And emulation systems are not perfect.

Well of course I’m going to gravitate towards thinking it was a software issue since the problem never occurred before updating the software. And I didn’t say it WAS a software issue, I posted in case anyone else experienced the same thing. This is an owners thread, not your software thread, and we can’t help each other if we all keep quiet when something happens. (saying this politely, that may not be coming across in words)

Quoted from Grangeomatic:

Ok, so I’ve currently got a “standard” 19” LCD, and it’s good, but could be better. The guys on the ramps are not quite on the ramps, if you know what I mean.
I’m running Pinbox, so I plan to stick with LCD, so what’s the preferred size LCD size/type to use for this? Seems as you go larger, the aspect ratio changes.
Recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Go to Walmart and buy their “Onn” brand 24” LED monitor for $99. Set it for 4:3 in the monitor settings. The monitor will set in place with the CRT gone from the cabinet.

Return it if you don’t like it. But I’d be surprised if you didn’t.

#4164 3 years ago
Quoted from Giulio:

......or you could get on ebay a 4:3 DELL 2007 FP that sits perfectly in RFM, 20 inches and perfectly aligned to playfield.

24" LED fits perfect and has a much nicer screen and probably same price after paying ebay shipping. Also it's brand new, no scratches or scuffs and not over 10 years old. This was the first option I researched and was keeping an eye out for one. then was in Walmart and saw their 22" and 24" monitors. Bought both and the 24" was perfect. The 22" did not have the proper physical screen height. Gotta love Walmart with their free testing and returns.

The 4:3 setting on the 24" monitor aligns PERFECTLY with the game. So no f'ing around with horizontal/vertical adjustments. Set it and forget it and the screen is bright and razor sharp.

Quoted from Grangeomatic:

That depends...I’ve gone LCD and have no complaints. Someone else may look at it and say “yuck, that LCD looks bad”. It’s a very subjective thing.

The 22" Walmart brand (Onn) LED monitor I installed looks amazing. WAY better than the CRT in it or my Star Wars Ep 1 ever did. I had to swap since I went with a PC based Pinbox system to replace a dead original PC.

#4312 3 years ago
Quoted from MrMikeman:

Same.. And we don't have a grey monitor outline reflection to stare at all the time

22" LED fills in the entire space with nothing but screen to see and has a 4:3 aspect ratio option in the settings. $99. Just FYI.

This is an all-inclusive RFM thread, so I welcome anyone discussing their mods and what they're working on. Any issues between one modder and another mod maker is between them and should be kept in PM. None of our business really and not what I want to read about when I see there are 22 new replies in the thread. Two grown men can handle their own differences and do not need our noses in their business.

sniiki I am interested in seeing how your made your 6 ball trough if you want to share.

#4372 3 years ago
Quoted from sniiki:

PoMC, I'm happy to share the design but not sure it's wise seeing what a wave of downvotes and s**t throwing I managed to get just by posting a picture of the board or mentioning it.

Oh I didn't mean the actual design. I just meant your story on making it, etc.

1 month later
#4464 3 years ago

Yup, 24” Onn fits perfect and has a 4:3 option in the settings and makes all the visuals aligned correctly with no adjusting.

#4629 2 years ago
Quoted from justyn:

Worst fears are confirmed. Borygard passed along the bad news - apparently the board had previously been repaired and was in horrible condition. He was shocked it ever worked. Replacing the caps didn't get it to boot and he deems it unrecoverable. I'm thinking RFM wasn't the best pin to pick as my first restoration...
Any leads on a good motherboard? Thanks.

I'll be listing my game for sale this weekend and if the buyer doesn't want the original PC (I'm using pinbox and LED monitor), I'll let you know. Def needs a new CPU fan and I can tell at least one cap has to be replaced.
