Joined the club today.
Wish I knew just how heavy it was before grabbing it!
What a great game though. Wow.

Now... to change the rubbers from white and get those side blades!

#5081 2 years ago

Are these the cables needed for updates?

Just got it and doing some upgrades.

Hopefully someone can help me out here.

I pulled the pf out to put on art blades (which look awesome).

After I plugged the pf back in it now keeps firing balls into the shooter lane non stop.

Any idea what I've done?

#5092 2 years ago

Disregard.... one plug was ever so loose

#5114 2 years ago
Quoted from KAPSIG1:

Before you continue trouble shooting this
I recommend installing version 2.24 from mypinballs
https://www.mypinballs.com/software/rfm/code_updates.jsp

I really want to do the new code. Never updated a machine before.
Since you have done it:

1) Is it hard... or any pitfalls?

2) Is the new code "friendly" to novice players and advanced players alike? (In other words, will my wife still enjoy i, or will it be too difficult)

3) Does a 6 ball trough make a big improvement (if you have done it)

#5116 2 years ago
Quoted from KAPSIG1:

1) The code was easy to upgrade (I'm on original hardware)
I used a windows 10 laptop with this cable
It was allot cheaper when I bought it and Amazon could have it to my house by 5pm (Cheaper options available)
amazon.com link »
I bought his software and use it to upgrade my RFM
Friends use this cable or one like it without Mypinballs update software (Plenty of writeups you can find)
2) I have a 10 and 13 year old. They have friends over all the time and they all enjoy it. I would not worry about a difficulty difference and It can be put on easy modes. The kids really like Drunk Flippers.
3) Yes I've done the 6 ball upgrade. I was not difficult. I did cheat a little
Bought 6 Ball Trough's from pinball life instead of having to add optos to the existing 4 ball trough's (Upgrade optos are provided with the kit)
https://www.pinballlife.com/trough-opto-transmitter-receiver-board-set-6-ball-for-williamsbally-pinball-machines.html
Bonus
I also added the shaker using his loom
That is the most notable change and My wife and kids say it makes the game much better. I agree.
I also added his saucer kit for the extra bling

Awesome!
Thank you.... I'm gonna give her a go soon.

6 ball trough... it will wait a few for now.

Quoted from ViperTim:

I’m so incredibly happy with the purchase of my RFM.
Never played an RFM like this. So fast, so precise and the CRT image is outstanding.
So great that today I’m going to buy a The Shadow from the same guy.
This RFM is so mint I feel like I don’t deserve it almost.
But a question, the “total plays” in the menu is it lifetime plays and cannot be erased? Or can it for example be erased by software upgrade?
Also, is v1.5 latest official software? I’ve read about 1.6 but unsure if it’s official or unofficial software.
[quoted image]

Well... I was trying to decide on what colour rubbers to put on... and your pic just decided green is the way to go! Thank you.

#5133 2 years ago
Quoted from ViperTim:

I’m not in to modifications what so ever.
But these green rubbers the previous owner put in does look really cool.
Maybe the only modification I’ll allow on this game. And the LEDs he also put in because they simply work.

I did the art blades and they really brighten up the interior cabinet. Also getting applejuice software once I get my laptop issue figured out.

#5145 2 years ago
Quoted from applejuice:

Exactly what I thought. 30+ years of repairs knowledge here and I only fix what’s broken. Changing all capacitors for the sake of it will more than likely just cause issues, but leave him to it. Seen it hundreds of times where people change things there’s no need to, then break it. Just my 2p

Hey applejuice

Sent you a pm

Anyone ever get this error when trying to open pinball 2000 updater? It's happened on 2 separate computers now.

Lyman tribute as code champion is so well deserved !
Is there now some plan around 2.25 ?

Ugggh... my computer issues are preventing me updating. I really want it!!!
Applejuice and I are trying to figure it out still.

#5155 2 years ago
Quoted from Premier:

Finally in the club my machine is on 1.2 software
How do you update it?[quoted image][quoted image]

Mypinballs.com is applejuice software. I'm in the process myself.

#5156 2 years ago

I know there is the port inside the door, but can you connect directly in the head?

#5158 2 years ago
Quoted from embien:

Yes you can. You can even pull the box (takes less than 5 minutes) and update. I use to update this way when swapping between RFM and SwE1

Do you pull the box from the front or back of the head?

#5161 2 years ago
Quoted from zerbam:

remove the translight and it slides out from the front

Oh. I know how to take it out. Just unsure whether the box is accessible from the front or the back.

Hello,
I was trying to see of 23 inch monitor fit in the machines
It's looks good any opinions?
[quoted image]

How do the projections line up during gameplay??

#5213 2 years ago
Quoted from Premier:

After a few days of testing and adjustments, it was able to use acer 23.8, and its looks perfect
[quoted image][quoted image]

Aren't the tractor beams meant to line up with the ramps?
Looks squished horizontally.

#5214 2 years ago

I would think the easiest to show alignment is Martian position during Paris.

#5218 2 years ago

When updating has anyone had the update start, then stop. Trying to figure it out with applejuice buy thought I'd see if it is a set up issue or something I'm doing wrong.

All original hardware (and 1.1 software).
In the box the leads were not connected to the proper pins so I rectified that.

Any ideas?

#5222 2 years ago
Quoted from sven:

I did, the very first time. I did the following:
- reseated the connectors
- turned screen saver and power management off (standby and such)
- lowered the baudrate for the updating process
After that I haven't had a problem since with multiple updates, but I'm not sure if one of the above helped or that it was just coincidence.

Ok. I will try those things (some I have tried already)

#5225 2 years ago
Quoted from applejuice:

My thought on this is maybe the internal pin2k serial cable is worn and only works at 9600 baud. Updates are done at higher speeds than this. So maybe I’ll have to reintroduce the lower speeds on the update app as options again

Ok. Perhaps we can try that.

Edit: would the internal serial cable wear if it's never been updated??

#5227 2 years ago
Quoted from Zee:

If it's a poor-quality cable it can have transmission errors. Bad or missing shielding, etc. Remember it's in proximity to a high RF/EMI interference source - the CRT monitor, if you still have one in the machine.

Good point. Plus the heat factor if the fan ever failed.

Trying to find replacements but coming up empty thus far.

3 weeks later
#5276 2 years ago

I think my fan needs replacing as it makes a bit of a noise now.

Are most just replacing the small fan that is in place? Or doing as above?

applejuice and I are trying to figure out an issue updating my RFM. Thought I'd reach out to the group to see if they have experience with something similar for a possible fix.

Here's what happens:
I start up machine connected to my desktop direct to the head with coin door open.
Once it starts I connect on the update program. Connects fine and can read all info no problem. Currently in version 1.11.
I click update software while set to lowest transfer speed. Blue bar appears on screen, the immediately disappears goes to grid screen then list updates in blue writing.
Then "Flash Failed" on program shows.

What I have tried thus far:
-Different leads including those sold by applejuice.
-replaced the flat cable in the computer for updating
-repeated all connections
-two separate computers

Any thoughts?

Prism card issue?
Board issue?

#5339 1 year ago
Quoted from Lithonion:

First question is are you running the software as administrator? Right click exe and run as admin.
Have you tried updating from factory software? When I got my pin is was on 1.0. I updated it to 1.5 then I updated to applejuice's software.
Do you know anyone locally that has a RFM that you could put your prism board into to test and possibly update if the above doesn't work?
If the problem is the same on another pin, points to the prism board possibly having a bad rom chip.
Just my thoughts.

Will check that for administrator.

Any idea where to get 1.5 download?

No I saw size.

Would be part of bigger display... at least in my mind.

Was playing the new code and had a crash during Martian bowling. Never had it happen on original code.
Machine basically did a hard reset.
Any idea if this is a setting issue, or something else all together.

(It of course happened during a fantastic scoring game!!)

#5365 1 year ago
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

I believe it is a bug that's been in the game the entire time, even on original code. I think it has been mentioned in this thread a few times.

OK. Guess it is not something easily fixed.

Any tips for a ramp that won't drop back down?

Just out of curiosity, what would it take to set up and run a tournament server for RFM? I'm not super well versed on software, but the thought of doing it is intriguing.
Thanks!

There is something to that effect on the Mypinballs site. Not sure it's active though.
applejuice maybe can shed light on it.

Quoted from bob_e:

Check your local glass shops, I last paid under $30 per sheet. Call around some places may be 2-3 time that. The local chain Henderson's had the best price here in S.E. MI.

But can a local shop do the ones RFM requires for reflection?

Anyone replaced the red T-mold on the head?

Mine is looking pretty faded. Trying to decide if I want to keep it red.

Anyone changed it up? Black, Chrome? Red metallic?

#5404 1 year ago

Yes, mine is Martian green. Use the green from galaga cabinets

Saw folks mention adding a spring in. Anyone have a recommended spring size?

#5431 1 year ago

Then, back to my first post: They do new runs because it was sold out a month ago as well and there was a new run about a week after. they just sell very quickly and I think they can't keep up with the demand.

I'll keep an eye out.
Trying to make it the nicest RFM out there! lol

Thinking about making some changes to the armor... perhaps martian green... Not sure yet.

Do you want to powder coat those metal parts? I think it would look great, according to my imagination of course.

Ya... powder coat for sure

Question for those that installed 6 ball trough.

I installed mine and I now get three balls for every ball.

I tried reseatting the connections and nothing.

In set up menu I enabled 6 ball trough.

The opto boards are brand new 6 ball trough optos (as I don't trust me soldering skills).

Anything I missed??

#5681 1 year ago

Have you added the extra wiring to the trough boards connectors correctly as per the instructions? Pics of how you have it installed would be useful.

WESTONETEK Punch Down Impact Tool with 110 and 66 Blades, Network Wire Cable Cat6/Cat5e Telephone Impact Terminal Insertion Tools https://a.co/d/etN09Ge

I used that one.

The recommended one would have come to over $100cdn... and is quite literally a one time use in all likelihood.

#5702 1 year ago
Quoted from Coyote:

I believe that last one should actually be "1R" and not "1L". So "3R, 1L, 1R". That's how it is on WPC95 games at least. The last alternate single press is used to indicate that you're "finished" entering. (Both is how you tell the game "okay, I'm starting".)

Strange.
It doesn't seem to do anything.

What us supposed to happen?

#5704 1 year ago
Quoted from Coyote:

Honestly don't know - I never knew about this code on RFM before, so never tried.
Keep in mind, the code MAY be dependant on a certain version of software, or do something 'hidden', like activate a special animation that will play the next time you make a certain shot..

True. Could be code dependent

That said, I was looking for something on Amazon and came across this awesome alien thing that is PERFECT for RFM as a topper or game room decoration. I just thought I'd share it with everyone in case someone might want it before they're gone.
To find it, copy and paste this into theAmazon search bar.
UFO Cow Abduction: Beam Up Your Bovine (With Light and Sound!) (RP Minis)
They're only $12. For that price, get 2 and take the cow out of one and replace it with a car. It actually pics up the cow via magnet! Lol So cool!
Would be awesome if someone could wire it up and connect it into the game and have it be interactive.
Anyway, just thought I'd share it with my old fam. = )

So I was watching a video for gameplay strategy and I noticed in one of them that they triggered Attack Mars after completing only 3 "missions", I assume that is a setting you can flip on? Is that right? (I ask as I have yet to trigger it despite almost completing all 9 missions... my best shot was when I had 1 ball to get to the mystery mission... only to get alien bowling and have it crash! )

I try my best. Its mainly just a lot of hours and graft!

Its number of saucer lights not number of modes

Good to know... I guess I suck. Lol

Quoted from Nickz4860:

Reseated the prism card, no problems since. Last night I decided to try an update from 1.4 to 1.5. I was able to do this successfully using the fupdate and the computers command prompt.
I did some more research and found mypinballs, version 2.5. I’m trying to use the fupdate program with this code but am having problems.
Can this be done the same way I updated from one 1.4 to 1.5? I just downloaded the fupdate program and the game software and put them together on a flashdrive. With the computer plugged into the revenge from mars, Is there a certain command prompt I should be using to start the process? Thanks for any info!

You could buy a license for applejuice software installer and monetarily support his efforts

I've noticed a few posts recently that have pictures of "Title screens" per se as shown below... Is there a reason I don't see these on my machine at all? Is there a setting that needs to be switched on?

WOW! I love that green T-molding. Very nice.

Actually stole the idea from applejuice.

Thinking about powder coating legs, lockdown bar and maybe speaker grill and top metal moulding the same colour.

Quoted from applejuice:

Yes, I have green t-moulding and matching green power coated legs. Everything else factory. Too much green would be wrong, but this is just right.

Legs and lockdown bar are where I'm leaning. Think you're right about the speaker grill and the top bracket though.

Question regarding the new code. When I play a multi player game the stroke of luck will select REDUCE SCORES every time for the first 3 or 4 times. Is this purposeful?

#5913 1 year ago
Quoted from applejuice:

Only if the score war setting is on in the party options.

Found it! Thank you!!

Do you know the answer to my other question about the "Title screens" with the pictures as shown above? I don't see them.

#5915 1 year ago
Quoted from applejuice:

If you don't see title screens then you have an issue I've not seen before. Graphics roms maybe? is it original or emulated hardware you are using?

Original hardware.

#5917 1 year ago
Quoted from Nickz4860:

The “title screen” will show for a second or two after a mode is selected at the start of a game. They also should show after completing a mode and moving on to a new one.

Yup... never seen them...

#5923 1 year ago
Quoted from Zee:

Do you hear the sound call associated with the mode title screens? Like "Big-O Beam!" with the music?

Nope.

#5924 1 year ago

Ok...
Looks like this could be the issue.

Solutions?

Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

My first thought would be to remove and reseat that mask rom. Maybe shoot some contact cleaner into the socket while it is out. I don't have direct experience on the prism card, but it has worked on other roms where they were not reading right due to a dirty or bad socket.

I'll give it a try.

Anyone have tips or cautions when doing this?

Do I need a separating tool for prism card?? I thought I recalled seeing that in the past.

Saw it listed here for 3D printing if you can't find one.

Ok I tried reseatting the ROMs. no change. Still testing bad.

If I buy programmable ROM's... anyone know where or how to program them?? Or would it be done with an update?

I'm clueless here.

#5939 1 year ago
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

I would check with Dave at pinballrom.com. He likely knows what the EPROM equivalent would be, and should be able to program one for you.

even better! He's just up the highway from me!!Thanks... should have thought of him!

Quoted from GILV:

I'm sorry to say this but I've tried finding these but nobody can burn them I've asked two guys, in Ontario who do burn ROM'S and they both said they could not do them......, you can only get original factory ROM's and they rare rare rare.....
I just sold a set 2 weeks ago, I had 2 back ups so I sold one of them, too bad
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/rfm-nos-rom-s-

Dang it.

Nucore may be the next best option.

#5946 1 year ago

I saw those... doesn't specify they are tested though.

I guess for $40AUD with shipping it's worth a risk though.

Maybe you could buy those and get them burned Canuc_pinhead ?

I bought them.
We'll see

#5954 1 year ago
Quoted from Nickz4860:

How risky is it to “disable updated code” I read that there is a chance it will be stuck on an early version. I am getting an error,“Masked ROMs (V100,V101) checksum bad”
I decided to try to reinstall mypinballs v2.5, it said “FLASH Update complete” but it also said “MASKED IMAGE BANK (0) MISMATCH” on the same screen before the machine reset itself after the update. Still getting the same “checksum bad”. I saw the v101 ROM for sale. I’m wondering if that would be a simple fix?
I finally decided to buy a nucore replacement computer which should work perfect with my existing LCD conversion. I still would like to get the original computer error free

I have the same masked ROM errors (U100 and U101).
I was unable to find any new ones, but did order used ones from Australia... should arrive later this month and hopefully fix it.

I got my rfm updated with a standard usb stick and applejuice excellent manual update instructions and roms. I swear I’m hearing new callouts. Definitely got the drop target hurry up (I think that’s new?).
Now planning on putting in the extended trough and his other cool add-ons. And maybe modding the auto plunger to allow permanent plunger attachment for swep1. Is it worth it?
applejuice any plans to update code on swep1? Do you have a playfield?

6 ball trough is awesome. Highly recommend adding it.

I have a question in regards to what I need to adjust or fix...

The shooter seems weak... when the button is pressed it makes it to the top of the loop, but never to the far left into the lanes (if that makes sense). I recall that when I bought it it fired all the way.

The flippers also feel a bit weak at times.

Suggestions?

The small stand up target broke away the other day.
As I was looking at the area I noticed that the other square targets are a combination of flat and 3D (see pic).
Is that normal or should I be ordering a flat one to replace it? (Or 2 3D ones).

Working on it
Runs on my own machine now and played ~50 games on it. No issues.
Code is not yet final. Working on the network interface at the moment.
This code will emulate the DCS also so no hardcoded sound in mp3 format anymore.

Will this be something you run off an old PC or using the existing computer?

just wondering if anyone has experienced crashes on the 2.5 update...my machine was updated a few weeks ago, with about 20 or so games on 2.5. Yesterday I turned it on, started a game on 'Mars Needs Women' and it crashed/froze, which is the first time the machine has ever done that. Turned off, rebooted, and it proceeded to crash again, but even faster (and monitor blanked out with green lines)..FIRST, I will be reseating the prism card, and all connections and try again..Just wondering if I'm alone on this or not..any input or XP on this would be appreciated

Nope.

A few things to finish up before the xmas break.
First up, a new version of the updater software is out today v1.0.7
Head to https://www.mypinballs.com/software/pinball2000/software_updater.jsp to download. If you have an installed version already with an active licence then this version is a free update. If you need to install it on a new computer then its not free.

Fixed a target and now I have a new issue.

I can not trigger capture or hit aliens in the middle lane. Not sure where to look first. Switch maybe?
Any direction appreciated.

#6448 4 months ago
Quoted from BlackBelt:

Difficult with the glass off (reading backwards and upside down) but go into switch test and touch all the center switches to see if they register…if not adjust the spacing on the leaf switch…had this same issue with mine (center target not registering) and after a quick tweak is was great! I did have to remove it from the underside to adjust…so prepare for that.

All the targets register.
Think it's the rollover... not sure how it just stopped though.
Also not sure how to fix.

#6453 4 months ago
Quoted from BlackBelt:

I believe there are also a few magnetic switches under the pf (center loop)…might check those by rolling a ball through the center loop shot in switch test.

Nothing registers.
If I used a magnetic screwdriver... would that do something?

#6454 4 months ago
Quoted from GILV:

Which roll over switch does not register?
What target did you fix before the issue came up?
Maybe a wire broke while you were fixing without noticing?

Nothing through the middle lane registers.
I replaced the small stand up target next to middle lane. It registers.
No wires look to be free.

#6457 4 months ago
Quoted from GILV:

Those are called reed switches, I think there are 2 reed switches under the middle lane, you need to roll a ball over those switches to test them.
Maybe you soldered the wires on the wrong lugs and it causes the reed switches to not register anymore.
Can you post a picture of the stand up target you replaced?

The small stand up.

Do I run a switch test while rolling ball over?

So within the last few months I been having a random problem that happened twice on me. During gameplay with no rhyme or reason, the game completely locks up on me. The playfield goes black and basically has no power and the display screen with an gameplay image on it locks up. If I power if off and on again, it works fine! This problem has only happened to me twice in probably the last 30 or so times playing it. Any ideas whats going on? Thanks!!

Is it during Martian bowling?

#6707 5 days ago
Quoted from Willy39:

The first time it was, but this last time it was at the end of multiball right after destroying the big saucer.

Martian bowling is a known issue. Crashes happen there.

But not heard of it in other modes
