So here we go again with another bowling themed machine to bring back to life. RonSS Why did I let you talk me into picking up this new project ? I picked this machine up it was in 1 families basement for the past 40 years about an hour south of chicago. Overall the machine is in pretty good condition and was about 90% playable to a degree. Had some scoring issues and some cosmetic issues and a couple structural reinforcement issues under the lane to get fixed as shown in the last pic. 1st issue i'm tackling is cleaning her up because the 3 people who lived in the house smoked like chimneys so it is covered in nicotine tar. It smells pretty bad from that so i'm looking for a product to help mitigate that awful cigarette smell. I also have about 4 spots with duct tape residue which i'm thinking goo gone will remove? Currently i've just been cleaning with 409 and draping Downy dryer sheets on it, i'm sure there has to be a better product for this? As soon as I finish scrubbing every inch I will be moving on to the internals. I will be starting with all the steppers and score reels in the recessed part of the backbox behind the backglass. After all that is done I will be moving to the switch banks, relays, steppers and score motor all mounted on the backbox door. The machine is pretty dirty as i'm sure there has been no love given to her for quite some time. Looks like the last time she saw action commercially was 1974 from the tax stamp still on the backglass. I'm taking the guru @mopars advice and not plugging her in until all listed work above at lesst is finished. So come along and join me on my journey as I embark once again into the world of EM's that I don't know much about still even after my 1st shuffle alley resto. Any and all advice given along the way will be greatly appreciated and hopefully I won't have to begging for very many parts but if I do plz steer me to the right spot to get them. I've already reached out to Bowlerguy (Chris) for a couple items and luckily he is a local guy so that will be a huge help. I will however be looking hard core for a 3ft extension piece so I can convert it to a 16ft bowler but that won't be an issue until this old bowler is back up and running 100%. So wish me luck and call me crazy but here we go. I'm sure i've missed a lot but a big thanks in advance to all of you, Bill.

Jumping right in and getting these internal components cleaned up and really they aren't that filthy. Thankfully they stopped using that nasty grease on the 60's machines that they used on the 50's machines. That stuff is a bear to get off all those little parts.

    Quoted from jgreene:

I’ve had good results cleaning with a 50/50 mix of simple green for cutting grime and cigarette stench. The green has kind of a minty smell, not overly strong though. Just be careful hosing down bare wood as the water can raise the grain.

Thanks I will pick some up tomorrow as this ashtray smell is awful.

    #12 4 years ago

Been a pretty productive day. I did a whole lot of cleaning the exterior today which took about a half a roll of paper towels. Also knocked out everything on the bottom row which was player 6,5,2 and 1. Took those player steppers apart thoroughly cleaned all parts and reassembled. Filed and cleaned all contacts on those A,B and C reset relays also.

    #13 4 years ago

So as I was finishing up bolting the player 1 stepper in I noticed this loose wire. It looks like it came loose of the player up reel and someone just taped the wires together. Would it be safe to say it needs to be resoldered to the pin that has no wires on it in the pic? I'm including th front view of this reel also.

I've been pretty productive this morning I finished up the last 2 player steppers. Getting ready to start on the scoring reels now after a quick road trip I had to take. Big thanks to Chris from St Louis ball bowlers for setting me up with some new ball return rubber and a broken rollover switch. I got some food in my belly now so it's time to quit typing and get back to work!

Geez i'm playing babysitter here at same time i'm trying to get this thing cleaned up. You guys are ruthless slave drivers! I'm on my last stepper u it before starting on the score reels.

Anybody know if theres an LED bulb that I can use to swap out these old #55 bulbs?

    #24 4 years ago
    Quoted from PM_Jeremy:

The envelope (glass part) is larger but the base is the same as a standard pinball bulb. They do make a variety of types but the standard ones are the cheapest. Note - on my machine I purposely kept the original bulb type as I prefer the look. But I do have mine set to shut off the "drum" lights after the game is done.

So would I be able to just plug in a #44 led 6.3v bulb even though these #55's are 7v bulbs?

    #27 4 years ago
    Quoted from FrankJ:

    Yes, #44 bulbs work fine.

Sweet I have some downstairs. Thank you!

    #28 4 years ago

Ok so player 2 score reels were one hell of a project. Pretty much all 3 coil stops were completely mushroomed and a bitch to get out of the coils. Looks like I will be tabulating a list of replacement parts i'm gonna need. All in all it was a good day and one step closer to a fully functional ball bowler.

    #30 4 years ago
    Quoted from RonSS:

Good to take care of that now.
You're in High gear on this thing!

Yeah it's a little different with this one because I know it was playable it's not like I last Shuffle alley project that did not work at all when I picked it up and needed a ton of work to get going.

    #32 4 years ago
    Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

Keep up the good work. I'd love to find a cheap bowler project to tinker with. Pretty cool games.

Thanks it took me almost 3 years to find one that was in my budget. They are some of the most fun machines you will play.

    #33 4 years ago

So I took all the score reels out took them all apart and all the little parts are in the ultrasonic cleaner. Score reels will all be done and reassembled hopefully tonight.

Well I forgot I had a Zoom call last night with the guys over on the Pinball and Bourbon thread at 8 last night so I didn't get much done. Up and at em though this morning and getting back to it but I gotta run back out to st louis ball bowlers to grab some more parts at some point today. Will do a progress report some time later today.

    #35 4 years ago

Just got back home from another parts run out to st louis ball bowlers. Time to get cracking!

    #36 4 years ago

    Let's get these parts installed.

    #41 4 years ago

Yeah worst part about it is every single one of them has burns on them so I'm just going to have to keep my eyes open for some better ones that might pop up for sale. However in the meantime I have now completely finished the back box. I got the last score reels put together and assembled and will now be moving on to all the other components like the flash motor and score motor and the switch stacks and the bank relays that are all attached to the door.

    Quoted from Mopar:

I'd try a white fine tip Sharpie on one of the numbers.
Up close you maybe would see a difference in shade, but when the
Score Reel is in position behind the backglass, I wouldn't be surprised
if it wouldn't be noticeable. Works good with black..

Lol I used a black sharpie to touch up some spots where the black had flaked.

    #47 4 years ago

I put my 8yr old to work filing switch contacts under the playfield. Helps them understand you rarely get to plug things in and they work fine. Gotta teach em early how much more you appreciate something after you put in a bunch of work on it.

    Quoted from Buzztime:

Marco specialties has lots of coils and parts in stock if St. Louis ball bowlers do not have what you are looking for.

I couldn't find the coil for the score reels on marco or pinball life or even doing a google search. 3-26-1200 coil.

    #52 4 years ago
    Quoted from Buzztime:

Marco has a bunch of 26-1200. Might be able to call them with the dimensions and ask. When I called they were very helpful

So far I only needed the one coil because when I took it apart the coil fell and basically unraveled

    #55 4 years ago

Man I do love how people create these custom ways of attaching the pins to the pin hangers.

This pinhood is beyond filthy and has been lets say "Improvised" to keep working. I have taken 3 pin assemblies off now and 2 had nails through them holding the pins on. I can only imagine how the rest will look when I get to them. Good thing is they are looking real good after a nice warm bath in the ultrasonic cleaner.

    Man........do you ever sleep?

Let's just say I am more motivated on this project than most others I have laying around that are on my list to get done

    #61 4 years ago
    Quoted from electricsquirrel:

This thing is really cool. I wish I had room for one.

There is a back story here to me obsessing over this machine. About 35 years ago when I was 10yrs old my dad would drag me to this little tavern where you could also buy beer to go. While he was waiting for his order to be ready I would get to play an old ball bowler which i'm pretty sure was a 20' machine because it seemed so far down to the pins. I always told myself one day I will get one of those and now that day has finally come and like I said I am seriously motivated. A lot of happiness for sure came from buying this machine and I am sure a lot of happiness will come from playing it with my wife and kiddos and friends. My only regret is I never got one in time to share that fun and reliv that tiny moment from so long ago with my father.

    #62 4 years ago

Still making progress tonight. Just got the 1st 3 pin assemblies reassembled after a nice deep cleaning of them and the deck. Moving on to the nxt 3 assemblies now and will hopefully get them done tonight.

What goes well with cleaning a filthy pin reset motor you may ask? Why bourbon of course! As soon as I put a drop or 2 of oil on this old girl and bolt her back on the pinhood will be completely done.

Ok i'm going to give this a pending WooHoo! Pretty sure i'm 100% done now with the pinhood but when i reseated the armature into the motor it just didn't seem right. The metal wheel is spinning when i spin the toothed armature on top so fingers crossed i'm making something out of nothing. Hopefully Mopar will weigh in on this and let me know if I f....ed something up or not. Otherwise I will now be moving on to the components on the door.

    Quoted from RonSS:

    Looks fantastic.
I'm jealous mine won't have that "bowler" look.
I'd bet you're enjoying this more than the shuffle project!

Oh yeah this is way better than the shuffle alley. I was off last week so was able to really work at it but back to work this week. Will be just doing bits and pieces probably all week long.

    #71 4 years ago

Well I started on the flash motor tonight. Should be able to knock it out tomorrow and hopefully start on something else.

    20200420_190711 (resized).jpg20200420_190711 (resized).jpg
    #73 4 years ago
    Quoted from RonSS:

What's your estimated ready to play this thing time frame?

Hmmm.. Well obviously I want this going asap but I am following @mopars advice to a T and being methodical with it. I don't think it is too far off to say I believe it will be up and running within the next 2 weeks. At this point the only things left to tackle are the components on the door and cleaning and lubricating the ball lift motor and assembly. I ordered a new set of pins for it also as the old ones were totally shot and they should be here by friday. I also ordered a new power cord and actually found a schematic for it on Marco so I grabbed that also. All in all I am very pleased where I am with it right now but of course I wish I was further along also. I am really striving for functionality first and then anything cosmetic will come 2nd. Long drawn out answer Ron but realistically I think within the 2 week window is where i'm hoping to land.

    #75 4 years ago
    Quoted from RonSS:

2 weeks is fantastic! That's a quick turn around in my book, especially doing it right!

Well Ron maybe I am being overly optimistic but I truly believe that I am in the home stretch at this point. While I am tentatively banking on 2 weeks it could be more that is possible. I may come across some things that need to be readjusted which should be completely expected. However all I am doing is thoroughly cleaning a very very filthy game, rebuilding all steppers and adjusting any switches and then reassembling. You have to remember that this game was 90% functional when I got it so it was not a complete wreck like the last one I did. There have been a few people who have chimed in and offered up some advice on a few issues but as I stated I would not be anywhere near where I am with this machine had I not had all the help of @mopar. He is a wealth of knowledge and has freely shared it with me which is what has allowed me to get this game up and running so quickly and I am forever thankful for the help of his and everyone else who has been so kind with their information. Nothing will bring me more joy than to post a fully functioning video of this machine as soon as it is done so keep your eyes open for a video and you will know it's done.

    #76 4 years ago

Well I ended up making good progress today after I finished up the flash motor I then got the spare stepper and the game selector unit and the frame control stepper done but ran out of time to finish the extra shots step up unit. That only leads me to finish up the extra shots stepper the score motor and the two banks of switches and to finish filing and cleaning the contacts and tightening the screws on all the switches and relays. Moving right along...

    #78 4 years ago

Ordered bulbs for the machine this morning and it's hard to believe but there are 162 bulbs in it plus 2 long fluorescent bulbs. Couldn't believe there was that many and had to count again to double check myself.

    #80 4 years ago
    Quoted from bssbllr:

Funny was just telling my kid that the pitch and bat needed 114 bulbs Crazy

Yeah when I folded the back glass down and saw all those bulbs I was absolutely amazed and then when I removed the lower back glass and counted 48 more I was really Blown Away! Oh well I'm going through this machine from top to bottom so whatever needs swapping out will get swapped out. I went with sunlight 2smd frosted kens bulbs from comet pinball.

    #82 4 years ago
    Quoted from bssbllr:

You are doing a great job and I am having a good time watching the progress. I picked up the shuffle bowl that needs a going through which I am in the process to start. I’ve cleaned and dry lubed with Teflon all the mechanical switches on the alley which were rusty, so they took a bath in evaporust. Also the coin door and all hardware cleaned and dry lubed. So now just got my grease with Teflon from amazon to start cleaning s.u. And such.

Do yourself a favor and go through it and clean everything and get it all done at one time so you don't have to come back later and mess with something that you didn't clean the first time

    #84 4 years ago

I found someone selling the original sales flyer on ebay so I snagged it. I'm gonna frame it with some old barnwood I have laying around and hang it by the machine when it's finished.

    Quoted from PM_Jeremy:

As you learned those coils can come apart. A couple I had to clamp together while I had the mechs apart. Plus I learned to gently tug on the ends to see if it would pop apart and unwind - thus helping me figure if I could leave it dangling by it's wires.

Yeah it happened a few more times also. Luckily Mopar had some extras that I was able to buy off of him that just showed up today.

When I get to the ball lift motor assembly what exactly are the steps for getting it cleaned up? Are there any specific points that I should lube/grease and for the chain assembly anything special for that?

    #92 4 years ago
    Quoted from RonSS:

I plasti-dipped my "forks" that carry the ball as they had no soft coating, just metal.
    Does your motor turn freely?

Yes it's fully functional and lifts the balls no problem and it's got some plastic tubing stuff around the forks so that part is good. I guess what I'm referring to is in the process of removing the motor and cleaning it up in general I wasn't sure if there was some specific spots to add oil or just the typical Armature parts and then as far as the chain assembly I can see it has grease on it I didn't know if there was a specific type of grease that anybody like to use for that purpose.

    #93 4 years ago

Some more good stuff just showed up in the mail today. New power cord and a copy of the schematic and a new to me replacement for my messed up ball. This ball has had some use for sure but at least it isn't missing a big divot like the old one.

Ok so what a tedious bunch of work but i just finished filing every switch contact in this switch bank. Then I went through with alcohol on q-tips and cleaned every single contact and then tightened every single switch screw. Woo wee that is enough for tonight.

    Quoted from Billc479:

Glad to see that I’m not the only one who does that, except I only do that on EMs - I don’t have the room for a bowler.
One extra step I take though, is to use a meter on every set of contacts once I’ve completed a relay. I only find a bad one once in a awhile, but it dramatically improves my confidence on my work.
    Love what you’re doing.

Thank you. No sense in half assing it I don't want to have to come back and deal with something I could have dealt with when everything was wide open.

    #103 4 years ago

Oh boy just finished filing and cleaning all the last switches and relays on the door. This now only leaves me the score motor and the ball lift motor to go through. I did however find some hack while cleaning the pin relay switch bank. The number 9 pin relay mechanism is broken where the spring attaches (pic 2) and some genius used some kind of cotter pin to make a tab for the spring to attach. It's a lousy fix and doesn't work effectively so i'm gonna have to reach out to someone and beg for a replacement piece. In the meantime i'm moving on to the score motor.

Well in the process of cleaning the score motor I have run into a big problem. One of the contacts from the wiper arm is gone I guess it just broke off at some point. Now what?

Thought I would do as Mopar asked and share a pm message as it is very useful information that maybe someone down the road could use.

Well I got all these old bulbs swapped out with the new 2 smd frosted sunlight bulbs from comet pinball. Gonna be doing some little odds and ends things until some more parts show up. Planning to swap out that old nasty power cord tonight also with the new one.

Well I knocked out the power cord swap. Nothing super exciting I know but just one of the steps that's got to be taken. The old one was spliced and electrical taped in 2 places and now it"s nice and new and just waiting patiently to be plugged in.

My wife used her Cricut machine to cut out the pattern that she recreated from the old pins and added numbers. They turned out great except for the 1 pin that arrived damaged but sender is sending out a replacement.

Yeah it is frustrating but at least the seller is a stand up guy and is fixing the problem by sending out a new one today. 2 things i'm planning on getting to today are swapping out the ball return lane rubber and if time permits I will start on the ball lift motor assembly as well. It looks like the ball return rubber was just stapled in so i'm gonna need to stop on way home and grab a pneumatic stapler.

    #121 3 years ago

Making some good progress today. I tore out the 1st section of old ball return rubber and picked out all the old rusty staples which sucked. New section is back stapled in after a thorough vacuuming of the bed it sets in.

Moving right along today and feeling pretty damn good about this machine also. These sweet ass pins that my wife did the graphics on really pop. Tim i'm super glad I ended up going with the numbers I think it was lacking without them.

    Quoted from Mopar:

Yes Bill. Applying numbers is like night and day. Without them they're too bland.
Back in the 90s, I put out ball bowlers, and still have 6 out and put the numbers
on them all. Makes a big difference on their appearance..

I'm not at this point yet but just figured i'd throw it out there now before I forget about it. Do you have to wax the bowling lane or just let it go since it is formica? If you do have to wax it what is the brand of choice?

    #127 3 years ago
    Quoted from Mopar:

On Shuffles, now and then I sweep and vacuum off the wax (powder), then Lemon Pledge it
    before putting on fresh wax..
On the Ball Bowlers, now and then I'll use a cleaner and scotch brite to erase the ball marks which eventually
will accure, but never wax. Actually, on the MBA (and 20 footers I had out), some like to hook the ball which
wax would make difficult. So since the ball rolls and not slides like the pucks, no wax is needed, and probably
all around best not to have it waxed..

Very good information as usual Tim and thanks for the insight. Note to self, Skip the wax

I'm all done with everything in the backbox except that wiper arm on the score motor. I will be attempting my own repair since Mopar went to the trouble to send me a part to attempt to repair it. I want to try this route 1st so I gain knowledge and experience in making this type of repair. However, if this doesn't work out I will be calling Chris at stl ball bowlers for a replacement arm. I am now moving on to the bowling lane section with the coin box on it as the other lane section is also done now. There have clearly been some bush "fixes" underneath this lane that I will now have to address. This 1st blatant thing is this broken cross brace that was replaced but not correctly. 2nd is this white stuff which I imagine is for sound dampening purposes. Is this stuff correct and if so does it just staple down cause they are loose and 1 piece is missing from the one end. Looks like I now need to transition from electrical to carpenter good thing I wear many hats.

    Quoted from Mopar:

Repairing the wiper yourself will 100% work as long as the new blade is epoxied in the proper
position so that its rivet rides directly on its row of wiper board's rivets.
I think it slipped my mind to answer your question. I've used Gorrila Glue epoxy but any 2
part epoxy will be strong and I use it for multiple purposes. At Walmart, Locktite epoxy is like
$4.00. I've made complete wipers by placing the blades and insulators in their proper positions,
but epoxying that one blade will be much easier.
I just slightly bend the new blade until its curvature matches the wiper's blade curvature that it's going
to be adhered to. Then I epoxy it on the underside of the original blade. You may have to snip
the tip of the end of the original blade so it doesn't interfer with the top of the new blade's rivet..
I posted this already after you asked, but here's the pic once again of the wiper I repaired earlier
this month. All five blades on this wiper were badly worn..
btw: I mix the two part epoxy on a paper with a tooth pick, then after mixed, I spread it on the original
blade with a tooth pick then carefully place the new blade in position, and let it sit. After it's set (I think
12 hours, but I let it sit 24 hours), I spot solder the end of the blade to insure the new and original blades
    have good conductivity..
    [quoted image][quoted image]

Wonderful detailed info Tim and much appreciated. If only one leg of the wiper arm is damaged do you suggest repairing all or only fix the one that needs fixing? I wasn't sure if you would change them all just to keep the contact pads all the same size for consistency purposes.

    #136 3 years ago
    Quoted from Mopar:

Well Bill, the way that one is worn on yours, now makes me wonder what the others look like,
but I sent you two blades so you'd have an extra thinking only the one needed to be replace..
I replace all on that one only because all were very worn. I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of the
other side of your wiper to be able to see the rivets. I don't expect they all need replacing, but
I can send you more blades if needed..

Ok good deal I will post a pic of that wiper blade when I get back in today.

    Quoted from Mopar:

The others has wear, but as long as the wiper board is going to be lubed,
there's much life on them. You'll be playing that machine only a fraction
of what it already has been played, and you'll be playing with it lubed.
I'd only replace the one, and then check it after a year, and bet you'll find
    no further noticeable wear..

Ok good deal. Will just keep on working on this lane then until that finger shows up. Thks Tim

Well i'm spending quite a bit of time on this 1st section of lane. It was really hacked together underneath and i'm tearing it all apart so I can put it back together properly. Guess I will be making a stop at home depot tomorrow for some wood.

Steadily making progress here on this last section of lane. I took the lane out and vacuumed it thoroughly.
Then I ran up to Lowes and scored a section of drop ceiling tile. Cut it to fit and stapled her right on in there. Underneath is now complete and only thing left to do is replace the ball return rubber and check out the coin box area switches. There have been some hacks added to it as they added a button to bypass the coin slot.

Ok so Ron inspired me to clean up the metal rail on the left side as mine was really rusty. Ultimately the only way to fix it is to have it rechromed but I scrubbed the hell out of it with a non scratch brillo pad and some Brasso and it cleaned up pretty nice compared to what it was.

Okay I got her all hooked up I started a game in regulation threw one ball and this is what happened. It just kept cycling through the first ball of the first frame and it wouldn't advance to the second ball in regulation. So what needs to be adjusted?

    #170 3 years ago

Going to take Chris's advice and look at the score motor today. Shouldn't be anything big I wouldn't think.

    #172 3 years ago

Alright so i manually turned the score motor checking all switches and also went back over them with a file. I also watched the wiper blade as it turned making sure it wasn't making dual contacts and it wasn't. Here is what it is doing from the front view AFTER doing what I stated above.

    #175 3 years ago

What do I need to adjust when the pins come down and you get a bonk sound and a few of them retract back up into the head? I have that issue going on right now also

    #177 3 years ago
    Quoted from Bowlerguy:

That means the pins are active when you here the coil buzzing. That could be a few things. Start by watching your reset wheel on the pindeck to see that it only makes 1 revolution.

I just adjusted a switch on the reset wheel and it still did it once more in a game. May have to try and really fine tune those switches again.

I played a quick game tonight after getting the score motor all put back together and it was just 1 game but no pin reset errors. I will play a few games tomorrow and see if the trend continues. Pretty sure a piece of gunk was sticking up the shaft in the score motor cause a small grease ball fell out when I took the cover loose. Fingers crossed that was the problem with the mechanicals and those are solved now.

    #181 3 years ago

Ok so problem has not been fixed. I just got done playing a couple of games in one and two player mode. I played two back-to-back games in one player mode in the first game while loading the seventh frame the pins reset. In the next game I played again in one player mode while loading the pins in the 8th and the 9th I got a reset we're a few pins came back up it still allowed me to take both my shots in every instance. I'm not sure if these white tooth Bow-Tie looking Plastics that hang the pins have anything to do with it or not but I have two of them that are missing teeth and the pin does not retract correctly. You can see in the second picture that the only pin actually needed to complete the frame is the seven and yet the 9, 10 and 6 pin are still staying down they are not retracting properly but I think that is due to those plastic pieces being messed up.

    Quoted from Bowlerguy:

From the picture, it looks like you need some new bow tie gears.

    #186 3 years ago

Back under my pinhood and I took it out of the machine and discovered a couple issues. First of all I have 4 bowties that were stripped out so I started replacing them today. Also the switch stack that rides the pin reset motor was broken and the switch has been bent down to accommodate it so gonna need a new one of these.

Okay I am trying to make sense of these pins not lifting when rolling over the rollover switches. If I just hit the 6 it does not go up but it will register that it was hit but then if I have the 1 3 6 and 10 still lit and I hit them all the pins will go up that way. What is going on here? I did go in the back and check the 6-pin relay in the bank and I also checked the number 6 relay in the larger Bank relay so I am a bit confused on this one. I pulled up the lane switches and check them earlier also everything was making contact when it should and wasn't when it wasn't supposed to

    #193 3 years ago

So here are 2 videos of what its doing.

Heres another one showing how different shot gets the 6 pin to not raise.

    #196 3 years ago

Okay I powered up the machine this morning and the 6, 8 and 9 pins automatically engaged and retracted. I came back here 2 the Penn Relay reset Bank oil and the relay Bank reset coil and in both Banks the six eight and nine are tripped.

    #197 3 years ago

Okay A little update I went in to the bank switches and the pin switch Bank and really filed and fine-tuned those switches. I now have the 6 pin working properly. I now have to figure out this pin reset error I got it three times during the course of one game. I'm not sure if it is that pin reset motor switch that is broken it seems like theres something else causing that.

    #200 3 years ago
    Quoted from Mopar:

You're referring to when the 2 or 3 pins go back up, right?
It's not the switch on the pin reset motor.. I'm sure the rollovers are
free and not sticking. It has to be those Pin Relays in the Relay
Bank isn't latching. Perhaps the plate(s) are magnetized. The next
time it happens, go in back of the machine and see which Pin Relays
(in the Relay Bank) are in the tripped (energized position..
btw: That pin reset switch is on the way..

Will do it's so sketchy on when it does it. I just played 3 complete games with no problems. Then I ran back down and played a game and it did it in the 5th, 7th and the 9th frame. Thete seems to be absolutely no rhyme or reason as to when it does it or what triggers it. BTW thanks again Tim.

    #201 3 years ago

Okay so I came back downstairs and right away it started messing up again. 1st frame completed it reset the pins for frame 2 to begin and then bonk a pin error hit. The 4,5,6,8 and 9 pins retracted as seen on the lower backglass and then on the pin bank relay and the bank relay those were all tripped. The lit pins on the backglass are the pins that are still standing.

So I was back in the main relay bank and I took the coil loose to clean the plunger. It was pretty nasty and it had a bit of damage to the coil sleeve but don't think it affects anything. Lubed up the plunger with lemon pledge after a good degreasing and reassembled it all.

    #206 3 years ago

Okay so it doesn't happen every time but at least I just found a pattern in two player mode after the first players turn the pins come down and reset then I get a reset error in the fifth frame and the three four five six seven eight nine trip and retract. The very same thing happened in the exact same way in the 7th frame. The only difference the second time is that the nine pin didn't retract but was on the back glass as being tripped. Hopefully this will Spark something in one of you smarter people than me that will tell you what the problem is. I looked at the one and two player steppers I did not see anything that did not seem right

    #207 3 years ago

I'm really just having a hard time figuring this thing
out with this damn pin reset error. Just played a 3 player game and the first ball of the third player in the sixth and the ninth frame I got the pin reset error and the 5 6 7 8 and 9 pins retracted.

    #208 3 years ago

Just played a 1 player game made it through with no pin resets however the frame indicator said I was on the ninth frame and yet the 10th Frame was lit up in the middle I didn't count so I'm not sure which one is correct.

    Quoted from Mopar:

You probably were in the 10th Frame and the Frame Reel skipped a beat.
There should be an end of stroke switch on the frame unit that when stepped
up, the switch makes and steps up the frame reel. You might want to check
    that switch out..
If it's because the score more is running slow and the pins are resetting before
the Relay Bank is reset, the problem usually goes away as the game is played and
the score motor warms up, but are you certain the Bank Relay is resetting before
the pins are in the down position? If the Bank resets just in time, the pins will lock
and stay down, but the coil plates will make a clicking chatter..

How can the pin motor run slow or run fast for that matter I thought it was set to run at 1 consistent speed? I have completely disassembled that score motor and sanded down the metal drum part of the armature and then oiled it. Not sure what else I could do to the motor to improve the performance of it, the bakelite disk has also been lubed to help it turn smoothly. I have also filed, cleaned and adjusted every switch on the score motor wheel and 1 of those switches is responsible for controlling the bank relay arm correct? Is it possible that switch is closing or opening prematurely?

    #212 3 years ago

Took the whole pin relay bank assembly out to visually inspect everything. This coil has seen better day also as a chunk of the coil sleeve is also missing.

Also went behind the machine and watched it as my kids played a 3 player game. It did a reset error for the 2nd player in 1st frame and then a few more times. I watched the bank reset just before the score motor stopped which I assume is is what is supposed to happen.

    #215 3 years ago

Okay so latest update Mopar sent me a replacement switch for my busted pin reset motor switch and I installed it this afternoon. I am so far six games in after swapping it out and have not had a single pin reset since. Fingers crossed that stupid $3 switch was the problem all along I will update later on this evening when I have about 15 more games on it.

We played another 5 games since swapping out that switch and not one pin reset error. I'm starting to feel pretty good.about this.

    #219 3 years ago
    Quoted from Mopar:

It was a free fix. I didn't charge anything for that switch.
I hope the machine continues to play well, but I don't
understand how that switch alone fixed the problem.

Not sure either unless the switch was shorting out against the broken bottom leg that was partly missing. All I know is we played another 5 games and even switched to Flash a couple times just to see if things would mess up and they didn't. I now need to head down to the coin box area to relocate the toggle switch they wired in for power and the little push button for free play. Not sure where to relocate both of these switches too anyone have any pics of where they put theirs?

It started doing this crap this morning. Ughh 1 step forward 2 steps backwards.

    #224 3 years ago
    Quoted from electricsquirrel:

    My puck bowler did that.
The clutch on the reset motor was hanging up.
A drop of oil fixed it.

Thanks squirrel I know I did that already but maybe I didn't give it enough or maybe it was pretty dry so I will definitely do that in the morning.

    #226 3 years ago

I got sidetracked. My wife had other plans for us this morning so I am now painting one of the kids bedroom

Ok I pulled the pin reset motor back apart again. I put a few drops of oil down inside the motor. Put her back together and oiled the armature. Played 4 games with zero errors. Will try to put a few more games on her b4 I clear her.

    #232 3 years ago

Well it appears to be working properly now in regulation mode. In flash mode though I have noticed a couple times it isn't giving the correct score.

    #233 3 years ago

On another positive note a box showed up today that made me pretty happy.

Vacation ended and i've been back at work this week getting slammed. I haven't had much energy to devote to it this week. Planning to look at it tomorrow and see whats going on with the scoring on flash. Pretty sure it only did it twice to player 1 on a 2 player game. Hmmm?

    #235 3 years ago

I think I know where this is headed!

Well if you guessed another ball bowler you guessed correct. Did a road trip and picked this one up as a parts machine I guess. I really have no use for the head assembly I only went and grabbed it because it had a 6 ft section of lane I wanted. I also now apparently have 21 backglasses now and like 25 lower backglasses also.

I am trying to figure out how the hell do you take the chain assembly off the ball elevator? I want to plasti-dio all the finger sections that the balls ride on. Anybody have some insight into how to get that apart?

    Quoted from RonSS:

When I did mine I just loosened one end, which allowed me to pull the chain (in my case a belt) out and angle each set of fingers. But that's the lazy way!
You'll probably have to remove the ball lift motor, and 2 guides

Hey Ron when you reassembled your ball lift assembly what grease did you re-grease the chain with?

    #253 3 years ago

Well i got 2 coatings on each cradle but not done yet I will get 2 more on each one tomorrow. So far i'm happy with them I just wanna get it on thick so as to not worry bout taking the whole assembly back out again to re dio them.

Ended up.getting 2 more dips on it which puts it at a total of 4 dips. Pretty sure that should be plenty but may do 1 more dip just to be sure before reinstalling it again this afternoon.

    #256 3 years ago

Ok so I dipped the cradles 1 more time for a total of 5 dips. Then I went to work reinstalling them which was a pain in the ass. After all was said and done I had the quality control department play a game to test for proper functionality. It passed the test.

    Good stuff Bill!

Thanks Ron. I will very soon be starting my lane extension project. Mopar is going to be sending me some pics and hopefully some guidance on how he does this. As soon as I get that info I will be full speed ahead to go from 13ft to 19ft. I do still have some funky scoring going on when in flash mode but other than that she is almost complete. Only other things to do still are relocate the power switch and the credit button from the top of the machine. I had seen a video where Clay rigged a switch to the coun return button for free play use and would like to go this route.

Woohoo I found this little tool at walmart for like $3 and it was just what I needed to get the little nails out that hold on the metal docorative strip up left side of the lane. Now I can get this out to Chris at st louis ball bowlers to get rechromed.

Okay so I have now eliminated all major mechanical issues for the most part and will be moving on to re purposing a section of lane from a second ball bowler that I purchased. I will have to do some modifications which I have already started taking the one section out where the shin guard goes which I will then be taking another part off of a second section of the lane from another bowler which will then allow me to run the bolts through there to connect up to the lanes on my bowler. I still have to cut the ramp section off and rebuild the ball return lane which will be the last process. That Recreation of the ball Lane I've already contacted a local woodworker and he will be helping me with that part of it. But I am happy so far with my progress and hopefully within the next week or two I can Marcus off the list also. If anyone is still following along I just thought that I would post this info to let you guys know that I am still chugging Full Speed Ahead on this project.

Headed out to st. Louis ball Bowlers now to drop off my piece of decorative metal strip that goes up the left side of the lane. Going to have Chris work some voodoo magic on it and go from beast to beauty. It'll start like this and it'll end up looking sexy like this one.

Still chugging along albeit slowly but this retrofitting stuff is much more tedious. So rhis 1st piece is the piece of the spare lane I need to remove and then add to my lane that i'm repurposing. It will be going right here once I cut a new board. Yes cut a new replacement board because the damn thing broke when I pulled it out. Ughhhhh!!!

Just curious was the plexi a piece you bought, cut and drilled or was it purchased that way. If you did the work what process did you use. Thanks.

I bought the new card and the plexi already with all the holes from Chis out at st louis ball bowlers.

Made some cosmetic upgrades on the bowler today. I sent off the old metal trim to be rechromed with Chris out at st louis ball bowlers. While I was out there picking it up I grabbed a new ball stopper as mine was missing and was just a chunk of rubber someone nailed on. So here are the before and afters and i'm very pleased with them.

    Quoted from Mopar:

I like to say, when putting the formica on the lane, you'll want to first contact cement
1/8" thick cork to the plywood, then contact the formica to the cork. If contacting the
formica directly to the plywood, the rolling of the ball will create an unnatural and an
    unpleasant sound..

Great info as usual! I wasn't sure if he meant the lane surface or the structural support of the lane.

    #285 3 years ago
    Quoted from orangestorm87:

I was actually talking about the structural support of the lane, as well as how the lanes physically connect and how you make sure they line up (aka not having a ramp).
So your picture of the routed groove and comment about metal rod through makes sense but I bet seeing two lane pieces joined would make it more clear.
But the cork board is a good idea if I can ever find the "bowling" formica. Otherwise was thinking about just leaving the plywood lane deck plain.

The only place you're going to find the bowling lane formica brand new is from St Louis ball Bowlers and it's like six hundred bucks. Then you still have to mount that to a plywood lane. The lane sections connect together so what do you do with a male and female section and then underneath is where those rods get put through the slots and that actually physically holds the sections together.

As I said the lanes attached with a male and a female joint which is Hollow and it runs beneath the ball return Lane and that's where the cabling also runs through.

    Quoted from popperette:

I almost bought that machine, from Manhattan Illinois, off of Craigslist a few months back. The owner was selling a shuffle, and in the small print of his add, was the bowler. I really thought it was funny how the guy thought his Shuffle alley was worth $1,700.00 and the ball bowler was worth five hundred less. He must really like that shuffle alley. I was talking to the owner and made an offer, and then I sat on it for a week. It was still available, but I couldn't pull the trigger. My Uncle has a Caravelle, which is the shuffle version of the Sabre, and I just don't like the game. If I had ample room, I would of snatched it up, but my basement is already full of games and I already have a United Falcon that I restored fifteen years ago. So for me to buy this game meant that I would have to get rid of the Falcon, which I cherish. So I let the Sabre go. I'm glad to see that you bought it. You seem to really enjoy the game, which is great. I also would like to add that you are doing a fantastic job on bringing, as you call it, "this old girl" back to life. Keep up the good work. I'm enjoying your post and your progress.
I've been looking for a United Cypress bowling machine, because it has all seven of my favorite United games. I told my wife that if I found one, I would buy it. I found one in California. I'm in Illinois. Ouch, $700.00 shipping. The game is a real dog. I am having buyers remorse, but at least it's what I wanted...sort of, lol. Enough of hijacking this post. I'll start my own post on my Frankensteins monster. Hopefully, one day, I can yell "It's alive."

Very cool you are about the 5th person who has reported they almost bought my machine. Thankfully I have had great support from many and none as much as from @mopar. Without his help through great advice and parts and most of all positive reinforcement at just the right times. My Sabre is mechanically almost 100% done I discovered a scoring issue only in Flash mode i'm trying to knock out now. I'm also trying to get my 6ft lane extension built which will bring me to 19.25ft. Once this project is done I plan to take some time just to enjoy playing the machine for a while. Phase 2 will involve a complete tear down and refinish all wood and repainting of the head unit. I'm in no real hurry for phase 2 but would like to have a goal of knocking it out within the nxt 5yrs. Until then I have my nxt project sitting in the garage waiting for me to start on it. Heres a sneak peak!

So when I was in a game of Flash the scoring was not registering correctly. It didn't put the wrong score every frame but it would do it two or three times throughout the course of a game. I finally got it figured out just this evening. I took the wiper arm loose as it looked as though it was making contact with two rivets at a time at certain points. I adjusted the Bakelite board by loosening the two screws that hold it on then reassembled it I have now put 8 games on it afterwards that it has scored correctly ever since. Check that one off the list. So for an update on my Lane Extension I'm doing in case anybody was wondering. I was supposed to have started on it this past week but the guy that was supposed to start working on it hurt himself. I've located another guy who thinks he can make the alterations so I'm supposed to meet with him on Monday and have him evaluate it. Hopefully more info of the positive kind to report next week on the Lane Extension. I'm the worst bowler on the planet and really have no interest invreal bowling but am loving my machine. I can only imagine how much it is going to change when I add on 6 more feet to it.

So i'm going to be getting my ball rails and my coin door rechromed here in july. The lock had been drilled at some point and so I was looking for a new lock. In the process of removing the old lock body I noticed that I think i'm missing the part that actually drops down into the wood that hols the coin box in the locked position. Can anybody please post pics of their locking assembly so I can figure this out?

    Quoted from Mopar:

On the backside of the lock, instead of a flat stock, a gear is bolted on.
When the key is turned, the gear rides in the grooves of both of the rods,
and travels one upward, while the other travels downward.
I'll see about getting a pic tomorrow.

Well thats no good cause i'm missing the 2nd rod and that gear.

    #295 3 years ago

Mopar I contacted Chris at St Louis ball bowlers last night about the missing gear and locking rod. I just remembered though I think he is still out of town making a lot of people happy by delivering some bowlers.

    Quoted from Mopar:

United used this type of coin mech and box in the late 50s and early 60s on their shuffles.
I have a couple machines missing theirs, so I need to hang onto the parts I have, but I'm
sure Chris has extras around. If you'd like it totally complete, the backside has a covering
    plate.
    [quoted image][quoted image]

Great pictures Tim those are very helpful. I reached out to Chris @ st louis ball bowlers and he has the parts so i'm gonna swing by this afternoon and grab them.

Well it's been a good day. I stopped and picked up my coinbox parts now I just need the new lock I ordered to show up. Also a buddy of mine started working on the new solid oak legs the other day. Here is the 1st one all done awaiting stain and polyurethane.

Yeah I seem to be having some weird intermittent reset deal going on. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason it could be the 3rd frame or it could be the 8th frame and nxt thing u know the machine is resetting. Not exactly sure how to track that problem down especially since it doesn't happen all the time. I had to find a new woodworker cause the one I had said he was too busy to mess with it. Have a new guy who is going to come over and take a look at it on friday, hopefully he will say no problem. Other than that everything i'm doing now is strictly cosmetic stuff.

Okay so I caught it on video finally of when it goes into a reset mode. Game was started in 1 player mode as soon as the third frame was complete and it was moving into the fourth frame it went into a full reset. Anybody have any ideas on where to go to start diagnosing this?

    #303 3 years ago

So I took the advice of Mopar and tried a different push button start switch. Obviously this is just a temporary solution while I continue testing but we put 9 games on it and so far no resets. If it turns out that the shady old push button was the culprit that will be an easy fix. I plan to put another 20-25 games on it for a thorough test. Also while I was inside the coinbox area I rebuilt and reset the play counter box so I would have an accurate count later on as to how many plays I have out on it. Previous owner cut the power cables whick I didn't understand until I pulled it out and saw the coil burnt up. Luckily the machine I picked up a month ago still had it's play counter inside the coinbox area so I stole the coil out of it.

    #305 3 years ago

Well my test of switching out the puch button with another switch to cure the reset issue did not work. It took 27 plays from the last reset but it happened again just now. Now I know it was not the switch that was the problem which is good cause now I can eliminate that as the culprit. Now the problem is what else could be causing this to happen?

    Quoted from edward472:

Any pics of tearing down the play counter? How difficult was it? I've been thinking about resetting the high score counter in one of my games, but I'm hesitant.

No but it really wasn't anything challenging. Just bend the 4 tabs up that hold the cover on the base and slide it off. On the right side where the plate that gets pulled in by the coil are 2 metal pieces notate their position as its important they go back in same way for reassembly. I would recommend taking pics with your phone and also the gears on 2nd rod below the play reels. Once inside just pry out the bar that has the number reels on it and turn them all to 0. Take a 1" piece of masking tape and lay it across the number reels to keep them all at zero. There is a second bar with gears on it behind the score reels the first gear goes up against the wall where the other two pieces of metal are and then the rest go in between each wheel there will not be a final gear on the other end. So you just put that number reel back in fitting those other gears were they go and then you're done.

Would need to see pictures but I know theres a light bulb up at the top under the scoring placard and 2 push button switches and on the left side is another push button switch to stop the ball lift motor.

    [quoted image]

So the two black switches on the top one is your game selector and the one towards the back or closest in the picture is your strike selector for handicap or easy or normal strike. That weird jack looking thing off to the left I'm pretty sure is the for the $0.25 component if your game was equipped with the two for 25 module. It is irrelevant with that plastic black Loom material that I can see in the picture I could tell that somebody's been into that coin box because that stuff would never have been there 60 years ago. The play counter should have to cream or yellow wires and one blue wire so if you see those three wires those are the three that would go to the play counter they are not needed if you don't have it it just won't record how many plays you put on the machine.

    #313 3 years ago

As far as the coin mechanism that also isn't needed you just need to wire up a switch and you can tie those in to the wires that feed the coin mechanism to simulate a coin drop and therefore giving you free play. This is how mine was wired up so I just left it alone since it worked. I'm 100% sure theres a much better way to do it but if it works leave it alone.

Been a little bit but just to let you all know I am moving along with my lane extension. After everyone backed out on helping me I mentioned it to a buddy from work and he volunteered to help. So we started in with an end section of lane and sawed off the ramp section where the balls ride up and wait to be rolled. Once we got that piece sawed off we used a Kreg jig adapter for a circuler saw and cut the height the rest of the length. The side fascia board with the 3 lines routed in it was a total bitch to get off because it was glued and nailed and broke. No big deal we will just make a new piece to replace it. The ball return lane trough that the ball rides in will be the most difficult to recreate but pretty sure we found a router bit that matches up pretty close. Heres where it is now and we will be getting back to it this next week.

Nice update! Glad to see you moving along.
Take notes, I'll be asking you for pointers some day!

I'm just flying by the seat of my pants here Ron to be quite honest. I will say they built this thing like a tank, it was designed to stay together that is for sure. It's assembled with a ton of really strong glue and those damn twisty nails that never come back out. My buddy is off this week so we will be working on it more this week and hope to have it done by the weekend. Will post more pics as we get more done on it.

    Quoted from speck7:

good old american made with workers that took pride, thats why they are still around.plus guys as here that work hard to keep these alive..

Well I can tell you converting this end section to a middle section is definitely a labor of love. It is far more difficult to do once you get into it and realize what all is involved.

    #326 3 years ago
    Quoted from speck7:

why are you doing that? adding onto your bowler?

Yes adding on 6ft which will bring the total length up to 19.5ft. I have the space and I had the extra piece of lane section so it only made sense to do it. Chris over at st louis ball bowlers sells them but they are way to pricey for me. Besides theres far more satisfaction when it's all said and done knowing you did the work yourself.

    Quoted from SirScott:

    [quoted image]
My OCD would kick in with the grain direction on the bottom right leg. Maybe just hide that one in the back.

I was waiting for someone to catch that. You have a
very keen eye Scott. It will definitely be going on the wall side for sure.

    #330 3 years ago
    Quoted from Dono:

Great catch... I'd think that given the forces of weight on each leg, you'd want a horizontal vs vertical grain. Odd that they're different.

A friend of mine made them for me and he didn't even realize it either. As I was looking at them later I realized it and brought it to his attention but at that point I would have had to have bought a $45 board just to replace that one so I said to hell with it. As far as the weight goes it's really not heavy at all in the lane sections all the weight is in the back box it is very heavy.

    #333 3 years ago
    Quoted from Mopar:

4 ft. makes a big difference. Once all set back up, that 6 ft. will seem like 12 ft. No kidding.
It'll be like night and day and make for a much nicer and challenging game..

You bet Tim I cannot wait to have this thing 6ft longer. I'm not very good now so I can't see how making it longer will help my score any but i'm certain it will make it that much more fun.

    #334 3 years ago

Well we are making progress kind of at least. So the router bit that I bought to make the channel in the ball return Lane ended up not being correct so we had to improvise. He ended up using a straight edge with his router and cutting the groove out. Still have to notch out for the raised rails that the ball rides on but coming along nicely. All of the center section will be covered by tbe ball return rubber so not imperative that it is a 100% exact match.

So when removing the side fascia board it broke which meant we had to remake it also. 1st pics are original ones 2nd set of pics are the remanufactured one we made out of an old ass piece of barnboard I had laying around. Obviously I still have to lay some paint into the 3 outer grooves and seal it to match up as close as possible to the old one. Last pics are the completed ball return lane. Feeling pretty damn good about the progress so far up to this point.

Thank you guys for the encouraging words. You really can't appreciate how challenging this truly is until you find yourself elbows deep and theres no turning back at that point!

    Quoted from Mopar:

Looking good Bill. This might sound strange, but if needed, bondo not only is best
for filling (which we all know), but I found it to take stain the best also. Not perfect,
    but not bad..

Thanks Tim i'm definitely chugging along on this but slow and steady wins the race right? I will most definitely be going the bondo route for all touch ups. Eventually the whole machine will get completely refinished but for now I just want to get this piece done and functional. I want it to match up as good as possible for now.

    Quoted from RonSS:

Looking good Bill! That old barn board looks fine from here.
You are taking detailed notes for me, right?

Ron i'm not sure one can really take notes on a project like this. You kind of just envision it in your head and then use whatever tools you have to make it happen. Everything we have done so far has bern done with a router, table saw, orbital sander and a multi-tool with triangular sanding pads to get the corners of the ball return rails. If either 1 of the 2 cabinet makers I asked to do this would have done it they could have made it look 100% professional. However it just turned into my buddy from work and our limited woodworking tools.

    Quoted from RonSS:

Looking good Bill! That old barn board looks fine from here.
You are taking detailed notes for me, right?

Couple other things I forgot to mention was we had to use a planer to bring down the thickness of the barnboard. I only used barnboard because I had it already and it happened to be the right width. I can tell you it really made that dewalt planer work due to how incredibly hard it is. 2nd important thing is to have a BRAND NEW router bit to cut the channel in the ball return lane because again I used barnboard for that also and you are removing quite a bit of material.

    #342 3 years ago
    Quoted from HFK:

You should only take a small amount of material at a time or even a new bit will burn up real quick. Do a light first pass then lower it a little bit and keep repeating the process until you arrive at your desired depth. If you are going to be doing a lot more spend $100 for a router table and a Dewalt or any router will bolt right up then you have guides and a generally easier time of things.

Yes I posted this info up above listing the tools we have been using which include a router and table saw, pretty sure this project couldn't be completed without them both.

Well it's definitely slow going and tedious work but we made more progress today. Got the decorative fascia board piece with the 3 lines routed in it cut down to 70" which is the length of the lane. We also got a small section of the ball return lane glued and clamped into place. Finally got the end piece with the routed chanels that hold the lane sections together cut to size. We ran out of time so will mess with it more 2morrow where we will route those 2 channels out and then secure that piece to the frame. Also we will cut the last piece of ball return lane to size and glue and secure it as well. Hopefully we will have enough time to secure that 3 lines fascia board into place also but don't want to go setging the bar too high.

Thanks Ron. Because i'm reusing some parts there is a large amount of measuring involved. The old story is measure twice cut once well i'm measuring 3 and 5 times b4 I cut any of these old pieces. Taking longer but doing my best to eliminate any mistakes. There was so much more to making this conversion than I originally thought. That being said it is extremely rewarding to see it go from being one thing into another. Should have more to report later today when we have a couple more hours to work on it.

    #351 3 years ago

We made some more good progress today. The 3 grooved outer fascia board was glued into place and clamped. Test fitted the section of ball return channel and will hopefully be gluing it into place tomorrow after test fitting the lane section in place. It has to be fitted into the machine to make 100% sure the ball return lanes meet up perfectly with the other 2 pieces.

    You're making me feel lazy!

Believe me Ron I am way ready to be done with this project. We will be working on it again this afternoon for a couple hours but there is still quite a bit of little things yet to do. We still have have to cut 2 of the lower fascia boards that go below the 3 grooved piece that the legs attach too. As an end lane section that fascia board was only a couple feet long but now as a center lane section you have to make 2 new pieces that run the full length of the lane section (I'll take pics of exactly what i'm talking bout later).

Well once again we are slowly making progress on this lane extension. We were able to mock it up and put it in position. Still quite a bit more small things to do but at least it is progress. I took Clays advice and got some small angle iron to attach underneath the lane itself to keep it from ever bowing. We routed 1/4" grooves as you can see in the 3rd pic so the angle iron would recess and not make the lane section higher. Will be screwing the angle iron down to the lane later on today and crossing that off the to do list. Here is the link from Clay's site to straightening warped lanes in case anyone is interested http://www.pinrepair.com/bowl/straight.htm.

Finished up mounting the 2 new wooden lower mounts. Had to cut these down to fit how I needed them. They are mounted to the end that had the rubber shin guard. Again some more small progress being made. I picked up a couple boards from home depot and a few cuts later the lower side fascia are done. These will eventually get painted but right now we are only going for 100% functionality. I gorilla glue and either brad or finish nail most things but sometimes use deck screws for structural support pieces. For these fascia boards I glued and used 1-1/4 finish nails and clamped for a couple hours also.

I finished securing the 1/2×1/2×1/8 angle iron under the lane section last night. Turned out to be more time consuming than I originally planned. I drilled the angle iron every 6" on the drill press 1st. Then pre drilled every single hole which made me nervous as hell cause I didn't want to go too deep and blow through the laminate on top.

Since I wanted each lane section to have its own piece of wiring harness I searched ebay and found the original stayle plugs. Definitely a little pricey for 2 lousy little plugs but i'm a stickler for keeping things as true to original as possible. Now as soon as they arrive I will solder on the wires and have an unhacked section of wire harness.

Too much hard work involved to not try as hard ss possible to make it 100% as correct as possible. Ultimately this harness will only see the light when it's taken apart so it's not imperative but it is the right thing to do for me personally. Mopar sent me some great instructions how to do it if I couldn't find these plugs and I would have went that route if needed be.

Thanks Ron and everyone else who has chimed in with the kind words and positive reinforcement. I know I have said it before but damn for something that looks so easy this truly has been quite challenging. Still a ways to go but definitely in the home stretch now and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. If all goes right I will hopefully be able to report a structurally complete project by the end of the week. Again I said Structurally not Cosmetically complete that will come later. Like you stated Ron, I have been waiting patiently to roll the ball 19.5ft but my patience is about up

Not a whole lot to report but I did resolve my issue of the lanes not butting completely up to each other. I had to drill the hole that the alignment pin slides in another inch and a half out. Also had one of the long 2 foot securing bolts that had a slight bend which was giving me fits. It wouldn't line up with the hole on the bracket of the other lane piece but I eventually got it in by twisting it round and round with some pliers. I also have not secured the lane top yet I just set it on the frame to see how it aligned. My plugs for the wiring harness have been delayed now till saturday apparently due to a hurricane. I can only go a little further as there isn't much left to do. I cannot secure the lane sections together until the new wiring harness gets built. Once it gets built I will secure the lanes together and glue in the last section of ball return lane. After final adjustments to where the lane sections meet I will tack in the new ball return lane rubber that my man RonSS hooked me up with. The end of the road to this project is clearly in sight now.

I would really love to find something like this that Clay posted 6yrs ago over in the neon signs thread. Decorating will come next I need a break after being consumed with this project since Easter of 2020. I did find an original sales flyer for my machine that I still have to frame and hang. I want to decorate my bowler area as tastefully as possible while including some eclectic and unique pieces as well.

Well I had to amend my plans. In order to align everything I had to glue in the final piece of ball return lane in 1st. The last and final piece of structural functionality is now complete. All thats left is to level the lane pieces and swap out the way they secure to the frame pieces. Anyone who owns one of these knows the way they mounted the lanes to the frame sections sucked. You have a screw with rubber washer that goes tbrough a metal sleeve leaving onky a quarter inch of thread to attach it. This is almost always stripped out which causes people to remove the metal sleeve and inevitably poke through the formica top. I took this idea from pinballrepair.com of using threaded wood inserts into the lane section which then allows you to use a machine screw to secure tbe piece to the frame. I will be getting to those and building the new wiring harness in a few days. Mailman just showed up with my new plugs to make the wiring harness 2 days earlier than expected so I now have everything I need to finish this up. Got to take the next 3 days off this project but will be finishing it up nxt week for sure. Also I wasn't 100% clear the whole machine will be 19.5ft long but the lane section will be 17.5ft cause I know someone will ask. Making good progress for now check back nxt week. Stay tuned!

    Quoted from RonSS:

I'm giddy like a school girl Bill!
I was looking into signs or wall art as well,,,, my wife, well, she's not as into the idea. I may have to come up with some "temporary" or switchable art pieces.

I just feel like you have to have some to complete the whole theme

Gotta take a few days off the project I pulled a muscle in my back splitting some wood and it is setting me back on everything. As soon as I can I will get back to this and post some positive progress.

    Quoted from DanQverymuch:

Hey Bill, I'm also rooting for you to finish that lane extension! It's so gonna make it extra fun!
I hope you don't mind if I consider myself as having helped in my own small way, pitching in by buying that Corvette lower bg from you. (Man, you packed that thing to survive anything! I never got a package that I could use as a diving board before!)

Hey Dan feel free to post a pic of your machine with that new backgkass in it. I'm just really glad I could help someone else who was in need of something I had laying around. When I get this project all wrapped up I want to post each backglass and lower backglass to the whole community. I'm only keeping a few for wall art and would love to be able to find some others who could use 1 of these that I have.

Not much I can do with an injured back but I did manage to get the inserts set into the new lane section. Did have to make 1 adjustment but everything eventually lined up and I got the lane section secured to the frame.

No pics cause you wouldn't be able to see anything but I got all the lane sections all installed back on their frames. This was a big pain in the ass trying to get all the pieces to almost the same level. I say almost the same level because you have to have the next piece slightly below the 1st piece so the ball doesn't hit the edge and crack the formica. So it's essentially a descending pattern starting at the 1st joint all the way down to the pins. Now that is done I will be working on the main wiring harness today since the most of the parts finally showed up in the mail yesterday. There is also a small 3 wire harness that I have to make but those connections are still in the mail. Hopefully they will be here in next couple days and I can knock that out and be done. Man I am just ready to be rolling some games here and put this project in the finished for now category. Finished for now because the next chapter will be a complete refinishing job. I am about as artistically inclined as a pile of rocks so not looking forward to that. Also not sure if this guy is a pinsider but I stumbled on his page where he refinished his bowler and it is such a beautiful job. https://www.petesgameroom.net/1964-united-matador-ball-bowler/

Well this is definitely a good day. I just finished up soldering the new plug on the wiring harness and it is now finished. Now as soon as the other connectors show up I will knock that out and then bolt these lane sections back together. Not even sure what the hell this 3 wired plug does really I know it goes to the coinbox so could have something to do with the credits.

Had a small setback that cost me a couple days on my main wiring harness. I had it all finished and installed and nothing happened. I finished fabricating the 2nd smaller 3 wire harness and installed it and still nothing. After scratching my head and my ass for a while I went over my work 1 final time. Ahhh ha bingo! The wires for the new plug were supposed to be soldered into it counter clockwise and I put them in clockwise. This obviously reversed every wire and so I had to cut them all and resolder all 10 in the correct pattern. Hallelujah it works!! The plug has 11 pins but only uses 10 so there is a blank hole. I put the blank hole in the wrong spot it should have been 1 position to the right but it's all good. Now I just have to staple down the new ball return lane rubber and attach the 3 lane sections together.

    Nice detective work

Just goes to show why you should never get in a hurry and rush. Now I just need to put in an order for some of these tshirts so I will be ready for our maiden game

    Awesome! Congrats!

Thanks Dan. Crazy how much it changes the game. I jave been waiting till this was all said and done to break out the new balls also. Big thanks to Mopar for hooking me up with these months ago. Time to put these bad boys out into service.

    Quoted from Mopar:

Good job Bill! I'm sue that bowler's like night and day for the good.

It is really hard to describe actually. The length is entirely one seperate issue from the new balls. The length really makes it feel like real bowling. The new balls are just absolutely amazing they are so quiet and smooth its just crazy.

    Quoted from Cash_Riprock:

Congratulations on all your work and effort. What an accomplishment! Hope it brings you enjoyment for years.

Thank you. I'm really glad I could do something that others were interested in and followed me through the process and kept up the encouraging words.

    #399 3 years ago

Well its official I still am not any good even with the addition. It is super fun though but I can tell you I am definitely going to have to make sure it is leveled better. I have found some shots are much tougher to make now because the angles have changed but damn it is so much more fun. Don't want to sound like a broken record either but these new balls are just amazing. I can't imagine not keeping much better balls in thr machine as these get worn out also

Killer work there... have been following this thread, and stoked to see it finally in action, bravo!

Thank you. I really can't reiterate how great it has been to have such positive encouragement from everyone. There were definitely some pretty down days throughout it and I know Mopar really helped lift my sales a few times not to mention many others. It was a ton of work but I learned a lot and had loads of help from many along the way.

Hmmm. Maybe adding on another 3.5ft might eventually be in the cards. Not sure I would want to do it or not but I do have this section of lane I could cut down and use. This time though I would have to fabricate the whole section of frame to accommodate it. Well it's good to have options I guess.

    Quoted from speck7:

another section would make you how long of total lenght?from what you have made so far,i,m sure making the gutters and sides would not be out of your hands at all

Another 3.5ft would bring me up to 21 total feet as i'm currently at 17.5ft. Pretty sure I will embark on this but is a little ways out as i'm currently working on my latest project a 1973 Duck Hunt rifle arcade game.

I had a few inquiries whether I did another lane extension yet or anything else to the bowler. The simple answer is No I have just simply have not had the time to dedicate to another lane extension build. It will eventually get done just not right now. I can say after the rebuild there was 1 major issue that would cause the game to do a full reset in game mode. Turned out to be a wiper blade making contact with 2 rivets very intermittently but got that fixed. The only other issue was the 9 pin was sketchy about retracting after countless adjustments I just replaced the switch and haven't had any other problems. What I can say is this machine hands down gets more play than any of my pins when guests come over. I cannot see a scenario where I ever get rid of this machine. So for all those who have messaged me Yes buy the machine do the work and I guarantee you it is worth it in the end. Here is the proof, in less than 1 year there have been 1291 plays on the bowler so i'd say that speaks for itself.

    Quoted from Mopar:

I once had a 20 ft. Chicago Coin Ball Bowler out in a Tavern, and in one month it
took in $1,050.00 at 50 cents per play. One of those weeks in that month it took
in $330.00 It seems almost physically impossible, but it happened..

Tim that is a crazy amount of money. In this crazy environment we are in now with people getting back out I bet a bowler would kill it on location.

One other question I forgot to address which was where did I put the credit button? Because I was so intent on keeping it original looking I just couldn't bring myself to drill into the machine anywhere it would be seen. I had seen guys put the buttons up on the player scoring area and also drill through the coin door to add the button. These solutions were unacceptable to me so what I did is drill through underneath the front edge of the wooden frame below the coin door slideout. There is a metal piece that the coin door slides on that was held on with 2 screws. I simply took that out and drilled a 1/2 hole and used a round doorbell switch as a credit button that slides in from underneath. These are very common round doorbell switches that can be found at home depot or lowes for about $3-$5. Give yourself about a foot and a half of extra slack wire so when you slide the coin door in and out it doesn't bind up. Next I just soldered the wires on first and then just screwed that metal slide piece back in and now you have a game set for freeplay and a switch that is hidden and not front and center and visually unsightly. I think that addresses all the questions I have received about how I did what. In the future don't be afraid to start a thread of your own and ask questions. I'm just an average guy who had the experience of just barely a step above not knowing what the hell I was doing when I started this project. I have said it countless times but without the patience and expertise and parts from Mopar especially and others I never would have succeeded. There are a lot of great people on pinside who will jump through hoops to help you succeed but you have to take the initiative. I hope this helps anyone in the future who may stumble onto this thread be successful in their project. 6/28/21
