review: SATURN™ Pinball RINGS

I put this under "mods" as it's new and atypical to have urethane in a game.
That isn't good or bad, it just is new and modern and they look damn good so far.

I just received my package of rubbers which will go on many of my pinball machines.
I am quite interested in seeing how they perform on my games on route (especially ACDC).
The 1st game to get them is my Medieval Madness tonight.

I'm starting off with a photo of the package of colors that I got...

Also a link to get them...

#3 10 years ago

I ended up putting the first set on Sky Jump EM at my folks tonight.
Big difference in size.
They bounce and ball impact sticks well.
I had my first semi-airball on this game ever after a shot of the left flipper
hit a target and on the way back jumped off the rail near the left slingshot.

#11 10 years ago

I put them on my Medieval Madness tonight.
*No photos yet but will come soon*
-They look great.
-They don't stick like rubber the balls slide/glide off these.
-I played one game and had the most Super Jackpots I've had in one game for some reason.
-When the ball rolls from the in lane onto the flipper it rolls off nicely
and I could hit the ramps well and save damsels without trouble.
-There is not a lot of bounce but I like that.
-Plays with more control it seemed during multi-ball.

#12 10 years ago
Quoted from callmesteam:

What level hardness did you get?

The softest

#45 10 years ago

Put a set on a friend's new Metallica tonight.
Played 3 games, some of the most fun I've had with this game so far.
I'm not really fond of this game but enjoyed it some.
I hit the right then left then right ramp in a row once, felt good.

What games were Saturn rings tested on mostly?

#52 10 years ago

After about 6 games on Medieval Madness they got stickier.
I then added them to my Starship Troopers, Bram Stoker's Dracula and Doctor Who today...

#54 10 years ago

Starship Troopers:
After just around 6 games they started getting more sticky and playable.
I really dig this color combination (throwing a red rubber on the small flipper soon).

This game is currently @ Fat Kat Tattoo in Jax FL

#55 10 years ago

Bram Stoker's Dracula with Blue Flipper rubbers.
Install after Starship Troopers.
This one got more sticky fast!
I knocked out a new loops championship and a top 4 score.
They look real neat too!

Doctor Who pinball
They played fine after about 6 games,
still some working in to do,
damn they look good.

Today AC/DC Pro gets them at Young Loud and Snotty record shop.
Street Fighter 2 pinball just may as well soon or NO FEAR!
A set has gone to a friend on Friday to test on his HUO Iron Man.

#60 10 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

Clean those Doctor Who flipper bats!

I didn't have time.
They weren't fully cleaned when the dude shopped them out either (only missed spot too)...
So, I'll have to dremel the damn stuff off really...

#65 10 years ago

Uploading 2 videos of Sky Jump EM with flipper rubbers in action right now.

The HAAP ones to me are not that good as they fall apart quickly! (one month on location out of the box)

#77 10 years ago

The new flippers on ACDC, it didn't take too long for them to warm up and for me to knock out a high score (#3).

#78 10 years ago

During my high score game, I did this epic ball trap...

1ACDCballTrap.PNG1ACDCballTrap.PNG

#79 10 years ago

I only added one to No Fear's 3rd flipper...

1NF3rdflipper.PNG1NF3rdflipper.PNG

I had my 3rd highest buy-in score on this game today.

#81 10 years ago
Quoted from markmon:

I am concerned this might be very problematic for routed games.

We will tell very soon.
ACDC gets a good amount of play and all others are quite moderate.

#99 10 years ago

Added 2 neon yellow and 1 purple one to my SF2 pin on route.
No photos yet (someday).
They sure don't fit correctly on original 90s gottlieb flippers but ok though.
I know that there is no Purple in the SF2 pin art but I have purple in the play again insert.

#101 10 years ago
Quoted from marlboroa:

ill play beta tester if someone wants to send me a set for tron. I also have TZ and Stargate if your looking for specific games.

They're pretty cheap man, I'd just buy some

#111 10 years ago

I'll be checking up with my games soon after week 1 of them on most of my games on route.

#114 10 years ago
Quoted from sudsy7:

FYI - mine broke right at the end of the flipper. So, my guess would be that there is a minimum bend radius that this material (particular formulation of this urethane) can withstand and it's being exceeded. This may not be the case if you are using it on the older EM flippers that have a larger radius at their end. I'm sure you have a mix of game types out there, so this will be an interesting test.

I only route DMD games currently.
This brand is currently on these games on route
ACDC
BSD
SST (minus the mini-flipper)
DrWho
SF2
No Fear (3rd flipper currently/making all Super-Brand soon)

Not on route:
MM

1Saturn_RubbersOnSkyJump.PNG 2 MB

I've played a few more games on Sky Jump, they play pretty well and bounce just enough to my liking.

#116 10 years ago

Starship Troopers with Saturn's,
can't put a small super-band on the mini-flipper as they rub to much.

These are the hardness #1

#117 10 years ago

They didn't explain specifics of why they like the new flippers on Starship Troopers
at Fat Kat Tattoo in Jacksonville FL but they have gotten a great review and the game gets more play now.

#119 10 years ago

Super-Band mini-rubber next to SATURN standard rubber in Starship Troopers resulted in damage to the SATURN rubber after 4 games.

1SSTtoSBdamage.PNG1SSTtoSBdamage.PNG
#120 10 years ago

After one week there is minor flipper damage to the tip of the green SATURN flipper rubber.

#123 10 years ago
Quoted from magnoliarichj:

so looks like superbands the way to go?

TBD, haven't run a set on a game on route just yet.
They got on my World Cup Soccer soon.

#125 10 years ago
Quoted from Gangsterbulls:

Iron Man really likes the flipper rubbers that you gave me !!!!!

Right on, I'd like to get footage of them in action later this month.

#126 10 years ago

I cleaned off Starship Troopers flippers yesterday and they were fairly easy to clean
and didn't seem to accumulate much more than a typical rubber would in a week of play.

#128 10 years ago

Medieval Madness in action with a set of SATURN rubbers...

These are the hardness #1

#130 10 years ago
Quoted from 85vett:

so, how long did it take for everyones rubbers to come in? Coming up on 2 weeks After the feedback I'm seeing I'm kind of wishing I didn't buy them (bought $35 worth) and not getting them is making that feeling even worse.

So far, it seems like the opaque colored ones hold up better than the translucent ones.
It's $35 of trial and error, I spend a little more than that on my purchase to test.
We'll all do this review together and see what is worth our money.

#133 10 years ago
Quoted from phishrace:

There's no mention of what hardness those rubbers are in the video. I see you posted earlier in this thread that you only ordered the softest (#1) rubbers, but folks finding that video on youtube will have no way of knowing. Kinda important information considering every color but maroon has 3 different hardness'. If you don't want to add text or audio, just show a closeup of the number on the rubber before you start playing.

These are the Hardness #1 added to all videos in the description, check!

Quoted from phishrace:

That's not what the video says.

Waited for you to notice then change it, check!

Anymore assistance will be appreciated.

#138 10 years ago

I played a game of my Medieval Madness yesterday and got to Royal Madness on the first ball,
didn't complete it though (damn it), but it was the first that I've ever gotten to that mode with 1 ball.
Ironic or not it was with these Saturn flipper rubbers.
I'll take a photo of them soon to show how they hold up with casual play on the machine.

#139 10 years ago
Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

Put some new Saturn rings on CSI - soft fluorescent green. They feel great. We'll see.

Post photos and a video if possible sometime.

#141 10 years ago
Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

The machine plays easier with them. And I swear the drain space down the middle looks smaller now too. Video later.

I'll try super-bands on my MM after a while.

#142 10 years ago

I service the ACDC pinball machine at Latitude 30 in Jacksonville FL.
This game gets the most play on route of any game in this area,
and probably gets the most play of almost any machine in the state!

I added 1 Saturn rubber on the left and 1 Super-Band on the right.
I played a few games, wow they play different that standard ones on this game.

I knocked out my highest score ever on ACDC pro though with this combo haha.

#147 10 years ago

***WARNING*** : SATURN flipper rubbers do not fit will on a SHADOW.
The ball just bounces off the rubber as it sticks out so much.

#152 10 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

I've got purple Saturns on my Shadow (#1 hardness) and they play great. Put up 1.4 billion the other night without even making it to Final Battle with them.

I'm happy to hear that yours fit.

#153 10 years ago

Saturn Rubbers on my Street Fighter 2 at Burro Bar with crazy LEDs and toys.
Just a campy video to show the flasher I added over the shooter lane.

2 weeks later
#154 10 years ago

The 2 on Starship Troopers are holding up well so far and the players enjoy them.
Photos soon.

1 month later
#169 10 years ago

They seem to be holding up ok on ACDC pro on route.
Initially I saw some breakage but it stopped mostly.

#170 10 years ago

After 1+ month on ACDC pro on location with quite heavy play...
I put the same amount of novus 2 solution and effort in cleaning both flipper ring.
The Saturn ring:
-cleaned up more quickly
-more smoothly
and more completely than the Super-band.

Saturn band on the left.

1SaturnVsSuperbandCleanup-765.jpg1SaturnVsSuperbandCleanup-765.jpg

#171 10 years ago

I'm not done putting Saturn's thru the tests.
They are still on some of my games on route and being tested
head to head on ACDC pro with heavy use vs Super-band daily.

#179 10 years ago

Two games with Saturn Flipper Rubbers, focus on the 3rd flipper area...

#180 10 years ago

After 3 months the Saturn flipper rubbers on my ACDC are now shredding...

acdcshred1.PNGacdcshred1.PNG

#182 10 years ago

I had these on this game for 3 months, no turning them at all and this happens,
rotated them and we'll see how long they last.
I'm going to take pictures of Starship Troopers and Doctor Who soon as well.

2 months later
#189 10 years ago

OK lady (or two or three on here) and GENTLEMEN!

It's been 5 months of a set on Street Fighter 2 and they've help up quite ok.
It's been 5 months on my ACDC and they've helped up quite ok.
It's been about 5 months on Dr Who and they're fine overall.
It's been 5 months one Starship Troopers and these have shredded the most.

It's been about 4 months on my Bram Stoker's Dracula and they're just fine.
It's been about 3 months with them on the Shadow and they're ok (take a photo soon/forgot to)

It's been almost 2 months on my Demolition man and they are doing a o.k.
It's been almost 2 months on my Dr Dude and they are doing a o.k.

These are ALL on route.

Other games:
Sky Jump rarely gets played buy looks fine.

There were all hardness 1.
I'll be doing and order of hardness 2 (medium) and trying on future games.

#191 10 years ago

I believe they will last as long (if not longer?)
and that the bounce will be kept intact and
not become dry and less active which occurs with rubber ones.

#192 10 years ago

P.S... all rubber dry rots in time.

#193 10 years ago

Just put in a new order of different hardnesses to try on future games, more updates soon!

2 weeks later
#196 10 years ago

Updates from the wild.
The ones on my Demolition Man are holding up well...

They are holding up ok on ACDC and The Shadow and BSD as well.
I'll take more pictures soon.

Here is some footage of The Shadow on action with a set on the bottom main ones of it...

The 3rd flipper is super band.

Important update is that I made a 2nd order, this time of hardness level 2.
So far I'm very pleased with the energy transfer of them, more so than the soft ones I've had.
They are currently on my X-Files @ Young Loud and Snotty in Atlantic Beach FL.
I'll do a video of that game in action soon and other misc updates of how they are holding up in time.

#203 10 years ago

Quick video post of how the hardness level #2's look and they feel more firm

So far one set are on my X-files and they transfer energy very well!

#205 10 years ago

I've had none of my #1 address snap, trying #2 hardness now on X-files,
it'll get a good amount of play so we'll see how these hold up,
these are the ones that most have told me had problems breaking.

Rick is good about warranty on warn/breakage, contact him if any issues occur.

#206 10 years ago

The red softness 1 Saturn rings on my Doctor Who are holding up quite well.

1 week later
#213 9 years ago

1BSDsaturnRINGS.PNG1BSDsaturnRINGS.PNG

This is how a set of rings held up on my BSD on location for about 5 months.
This game got casual play and they held up well.

#220 9 years ago
Quoted from dug:

I'm a fan of good old rubber.
Didn't have the best experience with the Saturns.

What happened?

I'm Not a fan of rubber,
it's a tar mess that gets everywhere in the end.

Unless it's a game played once a month or never...

9 months later
#226 9 years ago

Sorry for not keeping up on this thread,
I traveled most of last year for work and play and didn't keep up on it.
I'm swapping out the Purple hardness 1s for the Purple hardness 3s tonight on Dr Dude.

#229 9 years ago

Took footage of removing the Hardness 1s off of Dr Dude after a year and putting Hardness 3s on tonight...

#230 9 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

I like the Saturns, but got tired of them snapping, and then the company just vanished. So ... welp, not really eager to keep trying them unfortunately.

Saturn is a product of Planetary Pinball...
http://www.planetarypinball.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SRCH

Just search for Saturn

#235 9 years ago

Frankly,
I like how Hardness 1s play better than rubber and or superbands almost any day
is what I've come up with, on BSD, DM, NGG and DR Dude so far.

Some locations didn't like Saturns on them like the current NGG
so they then go super bands.

My RFM now has Saturns now too and I dig them.

My last order had 2 changes...

2 of the Hardness 3s that said were on stock online were not,
so they sent hardness 2s, not a huge deal but does this mean
they'll be running low and then stopping?
TBD...

#238 9 years ago

I'm going to play all sets of Saturns that I have out eventually
and whether it says in production or now I'm up for documenting
the product while being on my games on route

1 month later
#239 9 years ago

After about like 2 months play,
I had my first snapped Saturn ring!
The first one was how I found it...

Yours made it about 58 days longer than mine did!

It kinda makes me look bad as my games are on location.
I put the old softer set of saturn bands back on and we'll see how long those last (have over a year).
