So this morning at 11 I attended the Betson Arcade auction in Canton, MA. This was my first arcade auction. There were about 100 machines in total. 70 vids, 10 jukeboxes, 10 pinball machines and 10 miscellaneous (shuffleboard, crane games, candy machines, etc). There was a decent turnout of around 60 or 70 people. Since this was my first auction, I quickly made a list of the machines I would be interested in. Fees were 6.25% state sales tax and 10% auction fee. I felt I would be in for any pinball where I could get it for a 'steal'. I didn't expect to be able to steal one and boy was I right.

There were a few people I knew there. The owner of Pinball Wizard in NH, a well known pin flipper from the Boston area, and a few people I knew from NEACF.com . The best part about the hour before the auction, and testing out games, is that everyone is really willing to talk about the games and share knowledge. it's not at all cutthroat, people generally love the hobby and love sharing knowledge.

I was really suprised at the lack of bids on a number of popular video game machines. Most video games , unless golf or hunting related, didn't sell even for $25. Myself, I picked up a World Class Bowling for $25, and a non-working single-game Neo Geo Metal Slug X for $25. I regret not bidding on Double Dragon 2, which only went for $50, and Tekken 3, which got zero bids. I also should have bought the Striker 1945 or the Raiden fighters. If I had known so many machines weren't going to sell I would have held off on the bowling game and bought a shoot'em up. Two Soul Caliber 2 video machines did not sell, even when it was clear they could be had for $20.

The BEST part of the day? At the end of the Auction, I go to pay, and it turns out someone paid cash for my lot. I said, hey now, I need to pay. And the auctioneers tried to find who paid for my unit but could not. Apparently someone paid for my lot and left the building, not even picking up the games. So I get to go get my *FREE* video games on Monday, which an anonymous benefactor paid for. Thank you, mysterious person! Obviously I had a ton of fun and I really like the crew at the auction, very nice guys. Can't wait for next year.

Pictures on this post are the games I bought, Metal Slug X and World Class Bowling.

    Pins at auction:
    High Roller casino (Stern): $900.
Sopranos: Was pulled and placed on retail floor
Elvira and the Party Monsters: $1350
    Jurassic Park: $1900
    Flight 2000: $550
    Mr. and Ms. Pacman: $650
    Nascar: $2000
Stars (Stern): forget what this sold for, I think $275?
Taxi: $1300 (Marilyn, intact spinout ramp and playfield wasn't bad, but was going to need new left and right ramps)
Dragon Fist: $500? Can't quite recall.
    Bugs Bunny Birthday Bash: $900

Thanks for sharing your story. Glad you had fun and got an early xmas bonus

    #6 11 years ago

Thank you! I couldn't make it today at the last minute and was really hoping someone would post what was there...seeing what sold and The prices, I didn't miss much (and would have just wound up with a vid I don't need)

    #7 11 years ago

Wow, cool. Much better than the few I've attended around here. I agree on the vids going cheap. Nearly nobody bothers with them like they used to unless they're a rare one.

    #8 11 years ago

vids arent worth much. cost more to repair than they are worth usually. that was cheap for the eatpm.

    #9 11 years ago

What did the super off road sell for?

    #10 11 years ago

I think $125 for the super off road?

The highest vid was the pair of Daytona USAs, $350 for the first one and then the same guy bought the second for $250. The guy who bought those also bought two jukeboxes and a few other things. Everything was run by the wife, which I thought was funny.

    #11 11 years ago

I can't believe the prices on those vids, the boards are worth more than that on the shooters and neo geo games unless prices have tanked since I sold some more last year.

    #12 11 years ago

Bugs bunny for $900 , I would have loved to bid on that one, was it in good condition?

    #13 11 years ago

The highest vid was the Star Wars for $550, followed by the Cruisin' exotica ($400 each)
I bid and bought the second Soul Calibur 2 for $50, works mint, should have bought the first too! and regret not bidding for Tekken 3 and DD2
Friend bought Bugs Bunny pinball, final bid was $1100...still in my suburban

    #14 11 years ago

LOL. Well I guess I was fuzzy on some bids. Lots of stuff there! I don't even remember the cruisin exotica. Dent help the auctioneer didn't have the loudest voice.

Wow..any pics of the Star Wars? $550 would be a pretty good price, depending on the monitor. I would've loved to have met up with everyone, and I was working right down the street in Stoughton, but I didn't get out until 2pm and had to head home for a tennis match. Plus, I probably would've bought the JP, which I couldn't afford right now because of the IJ purchase.

    #17 11 years ago

Silly question, but how do you find out about where/when the auctions are? Betsons near me and I'd love to go...

    #18 11 years ago

it was posted on our local pinball site - also advertised in the boston globe. thanks ed

That so sounds like our auctions back in 1995 in Knoxville at the Holiday Inn Worlds Fair site good days but they used to even give free food and beer away caused way high bids more than you think as two drunks would start bidding each other up. No I got to have it, he cant get it mentality

    #20 11 years ago

At least at yours the thieves are drunk and spottable. A lot of cord cutting and shady crap use to go down at the ones near me (when we had them).

Vids not worth fixing? PFFFFFFT! The game world does not revolve around pinball guys.

Having a hard time figuring out what that Metal Slug X is sitting in. Too bad you didn't hold out for the Raiden Fighters. I *highly* recommend that series if you're dabbling in shmups. The boards alone tend to be worth 90-150 depending on 1, 2 or Jet.

    #21 11 years ago

I have a rayden fighters board, works perfect, just no use for it- pm me if anyone wants it reasonably

    #22 11 years ago

Well, I got the bowling machine early in the auction. I didn't realize the demand for vids would be so low. I only have so much space so I kind of screwed myself. The Metal Slug X is unworking, likely a power supply (no marquee light on plug in). It's a gift to my friend who always wanted to do a MAME. We'll get it working and I'll get one of those 161-game cartridges so he can have the 'real thing'.

As far as my bowling game, not really sure what to do with it. going in storage, when I get a house I guess I'll add it to the game room. I thought for sure that I got the deal of the day for $25; later in the auction I found I was wrong. Lesson learned, patience

i won the jurassic park for 1250 for a customer that wanted it. not 2k...after fees 1460 and the game was mint and in the operators home for a number of years...nice thing about the nascar jp bbbb was the operator donated them to the auction..the auction is held to raise money for the new england operators fund..i forget what it is exactly but something to do with keeping coin op going and fighting laws or over seeing things in there industry. nice to see they raise some good funds for their needs.

    #24 11 years ago

I could have swore the JP went for $1900. $1460 is a good price given the playfield was nice. Man, was I drunk or just not paying good enough attention?

I threw in the first bid of $200, expecting it not to hold.

    #25 11 years ago

By Star Wars do you mean Atari Star Wars or one of the other raster Star Wars games?

    #26 11 years ago

It was Star Wars Trilogy, the large projection screen game.

    #27 11 years ago

Also there was a south park pinball machine there that I felt got bid up pretty high.

    #28 11 years ago

South Park is an expensive game. The price I was told it went for was a pretty good deal.

Oh now you're just killing me. Had I been there, you might not have walked away with it...especially for that price!

    #30 11 years ago

JP-cabinet was nice, playfield was nice, head was dinged up like a typical data east- I think it scared some people away as it didn't turn on at all

OP, were you the one that tried to start the bidding at $100 on Taxi?

    #31 11 years ago

Hells yeah. $100. Hey, you never know, maybe people weren't interested

People were bid shy. I already owned Taxi. I just wanted to see if I could steal it. However, clearly everyone there was savvy and no one would let anything get away cheap there.

    #32 11 years ago

pinball wise, no. Best pinball deal was the pretty nice looking/playng stern stars for $350 i think it was. $900 for high roller casino was good too, fun pin.
i figured that a well worn flight 2000 needed a $100 starting bid as well, but got shot down. Surprised it went for as much as it did- playfield had terrible wear and kindergarten touchup
