So I previously had my nonfunctional RFM months back. I got it working and passed it to a fellow pinsider who REALLY wanted it. I never even had a chance to really play it.
So fast forward and this one came up (from a fellow pinsider) as a project. He was really good to deal with...held it for months until I could scrape everything together.

I already picked up a new monitor chassis for it and a NOS sheet of glass, so I just needed the game.

And NAVL picked up on Monday and, amazingly, it showed up today!

2014-05-15 13.51.58.jpg2014-05-15 13.51.58.jpgYep, it's a RFM!

And rain clouds were brewing. And all by myself I knew there is no chance I'd be able to move this inside myself....

#3 9 years ago

Did I mention how much I love Pin2k for some things? Head off, playfield out, moved it up my front steps, inside, and down into the basement myself. Man I'm beat!

Now it's just going to sit parked until I get Creature done. Then I need to figure out what's wrong with this and bring it back to life!

Nice!
I got another of the triplet RFM's that Pete had.
Hope yours goes as well as mine did. Mine ended up being very dirty, but not needing much actual work. A few microswitches out, replacement fluorescent, and a missing diode or two were all the repairs needed. Mostly just cleaning filth and goop off of everything.
Have fun with the project and have even more fun with the game!

#5 9 years ago

Yep, this one was his most "project-y" one which is about my speed! Playfield looks pretty decent, just needs a cliffy. Monitor is questionable as well as CPU. But if both are cheap and easy fixes I may go and do decals on this and make it a nice one.

Can't wait to actually spend some time on this...it was a good deal for all and Pete was great to deal with!

hey! quit trying to copy my current (but much smaller than yours) pinball collection. gawd, the next thing you know, you'll be proudly bragging about the joust you've just acquired!

btw, nice acquisition

Nah, I think you're safe there

I am looking into getting a RFM. I did look at one last week and the guy said that it was a 9 to 9.5 but it needed to be cleaned. (Complete tear down of the PF). The ramps had a lot of ball wear as did the scoop and the center farthest left hand target showed wear in front of it and to the right of it. Also the metal ramp showed some stress above the rivets on each side. Other than that, it played fine. Is this typical of these machines and is there anything else that I need to look for?

#9 9 years ago

The ramp flap usually needs to be replaced, and the scoop normally gets wear which you can cover with a cliffy.
Beyond that...were the ramps actually worn or dirty? There is definitely a difference. The wear on the playfield around the targets (if I read that correctly) is something that I haven't seen before though.

My own opinion is that there is no way anyone can represent a pin as being 9 or 9.5 if it's that filthy since they can never know what condition it is in and obviously they don't maintain it themselves.

#10 9 years ago

The playfield teardown for cleaning is easy. I can do it. There are under playfield connectors for all the major parts with wiring, and the playfield pulls out very simply.
Just put a Cliffy on my scoop hole. Not sure it needed it, but it looks good. That is also fairly easy.
You would have to see for yourself to judge any playfield wear. Not sure what ramp wear would look like, could just be really dirty. The metal ramp flap is very cheap, but needs to be riveted if you decide to replace it.
Working computer and clear monitor are about the only other things that I can think of.
Replace the computer power supply fan if that hasn't been done yet. They get full of gunk and fail, causing the computer to overheat.
Great game, much fun to play.

To tell you the truth I am not sure. It looked like wear to me but I can not be sure. If it was wear, can these be polished out?

Hmm.... I've never flame polished red ramps - be careful and test in a inconspicuous area!

Time for some action in this thread...

So game came to me as a nonworking project.

I scrounged a new monitor chassis for it (since it didn't have one) and was hoping to save the monitor, even though it was nonworking.

Using my patented radio shack alligator clips and jumper cables to patch the grounds back together...

I managed to almost kill myself the first time I powered it on since, genius me, managed to forget to put the flyback into the monitor. So powered on, the flyback started sparking and jumping around.

But once my heart got back to beating, plugged it in the right way and we had life on the monitor!

The speaker connections were snipped, so I had to put them back together. I was going to just solder them back, but figured I'd do them nicey-nicey and put on some nice .93 connectors and they plugged in snug as a bug in a rug...

My next challenge was that the game itself wasn't booting up.
I had another thread on this. Was driving me nuts. Weird voltage readings, switch matrix issues...
And the game was not verified to work aside from the prisim card, so I didn't know what I was dealing with.

Got some power to the board, but nothing else. Checked diodes, fuses, went through everything I could imagine.

Was preparing to send it to Rob...

Took it and gave it a good cleaning and stuff. Still nothing....

I had previously installed a new CPU fan and power supply, but figured it was also time to replace the CMOS battery since I know the one in there was years past its prime. So popped it in and, well...

2014-06-15 10.41.09.jpg2014-06-15 10.41.09.jpgSo I'm going to start on the playfield, but just wanted to share this lovely collection of flipper bats...

#23 9 years ago

Nice flippers lol, wow. So all it took was a small battery and the game booted up?

#24 9 years ago

Its about time that RFM got some love. Good luck with the project.

#25 9 years ago

One of these things is not like the other....

#26 9 years ago

Those flipper bats are "eclectic" and they are nicely lined up too. U a luck man.

#27 9 years ago

RFM is such a great game. People shy away from it for some reason but man it's just some fun ass fast paced pinball.

#28 9 years ago

Yep...and now comes the fun part...mad parts ordering. Then I am going to decal the cabinet and make this one nicey nicey.

Funny, my daughter always is helping me with games and she came downstairs yesterday, looked at it, looked at me and said "Dad, I don't know if you can save this"

#29 9 years ago

NEVER underestimate the Power of the Gecko!

#30 9 years ago

This is the first time I really had to work on a Pin2k machine. These guys were thrilled to get some love!

Really digging working on this. Unreal how much improved the maintenance is compared to other machines. I put in maybe an HOUR last night. And see where that got me!

Learning a bit...
I assumed (silly me) that once I converted the voltage jumpers over to 120, everything would be good.
But no...scary fluorescent ballast needed to be replaced. And new 120v starter too...

So found a correct one, installed it, just waiting on a few connectors so I can make it look pretty....

Oh, and here's a picture of my final repair on the snipped speaker wires...

More love...cleaned up the inserts, gave the lamp holders a nice bath.

Got the topside of the playfield nice and clean. Going to take it outside this afternoon with the DA polisher and see if I can make it shine!

Looks like fun, RFM is my next big project as well...randomly lost my red in the monitor the last few days so that's exciting!

#42 9 years ago

Yeah. I actually had an unsolicited buyer approach me, so it looks like this one is already going to a new home. Makes me wonder if I should replace it with another one or finally shut up and get my AC/DC...

#43 9 years ago

Gecko, Get the AC/DC. I just ordered one. Hopefully getting it next week

#44 9 years ago

Wait...you never know what's coming next....

#45 9 years ago

Yeah...but I'm pretty sure it's going to be an AC/DC. I want one, and even if I hate it, I need to at least own one for a little while to get it out of my system....

Cleaning day...gorgeous day outside!

Playfield outside (LOVE the built-in stands!).
Here is my cleaning process as well.
And here is what it looked like after the first round.

OK...so after treasure cove #2, two runs of swirl remover, and three coats of wax...
Man is just amazes me how well these playfields clean up. Not just clean, but the shine is just unreal...

Damn....looks like it's cc'd. Beautiful! You got the touch man.

#49 9 years ago

Ball guides...cleaned and back in their homes!

This is starting to look like a pin again....

Methinks this is the quick part...reassembly goes quickly! But I will have to prepare for the challenge of making this thing work...remember this was a nonfunctional project, so I don't know what ever worked on it!
