I was champion of Rutgers in 1983.
The highest wave I ever got to was 44. Takes about an hour and half of game play to get that high.

to be honest, the upright is easier to play and you will score higher
it helps your reaction time if the picture is smaller, you can use your peripheral vision more and move your eyes less.
but the cockpit is a cooler experience
