Kinda rare game. Simple but very fun 2 player action.

Some pix from the guy i bought it from. Its in decent shape but could use some love.
    I'll upload better "before" pix.

I want to keep the original cabinet so it needed a few things fixed.

Control panel is pretty gross but will clean up.

Pedals aren't too bad but i'll get them powder coated anyway so they won't rust later.

Steering wheels were rusted and pitted (like the one on the right). Left one cleaned up nicely.

Control panel looks much better now. A few signs of wear but still good.

Got all the rust off the shifters.

Rebuilt the control panel. Also clear coated the knobs.

Speaker covers were dented in pretty bad. Had to torch them to bend them back into place, unfortunately that left a yellowish tint so i'll get these chromed.

Back glass is nice, only needs a few touch ups.

    IMG_8789 (resized).jpg

    #13 1 year ago

Monitor plexi is rough, had to wet sand and polish the crap out of it to get the cigarette burns out. Will need a few touch ups too.

    IMG_8787 (resized).jpg

    #14 1 year ago

Cabinet cleaned up pretty well. Touched up a few more noticeable scratches then waxed the whole thing. The screen printed artwork is in fantastic shape.
The bottom was flaking quite a bit so i just sheared off a tiny bit so the edges are nice and crisp.

    Polished. Now for touch-ups

hey Dan, looking good, you might want to pull those pedals back out and straighten them before you call it a day - they should be flat not curved, which was caused by years of people smashing their foots on them
i beat mine back flat with a hammer before they were powder coated

    keep the pictures coming!

Doh! No way, I had no idea. Thanks Kenny

MAN yer work is top notch.
The art on this is amazing. Looks like you found a pretty nice example to start with congrats.

    #30 1 year ago

Thanks guys! It really is a neat game. The art package is one of my top 10 all time favorites. It reminds me of the kind of stuff i drew as a kid at school and church

    #31 1 year ago

Yeah, i got lucky on the cabinet, its in pretty good shape considering its age and milage. I've definitely had much worse to work with.

Wow, talk about a blast from the past, there was one of those at a local 7-11 store back in 1977. Didn't this game get banned or have some kind controversy about it?? Great work by the way. A Stunt Cycle would go good next to this and be era correct!!!

    #33 1 year ago

Wow! I remember forking over quarters non-stop to Death Race when I first encountered it in Niagra Falls on a family vacation.

    Very nice work.

Man I'd love to play this.

    #38 1 year ago

Looking good, your cabinet was in stellar shape.

Are you aware of the Death Race FPGA project over at KLOV? It's currently playing Death Race + Destruction Derby, plus he's adding support for Alley Rally.

    https://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=410548

It's very well done, and has a clean install so you can keep things original (although I recommend a switching PS). Pretty much a must have for any Death Race owner. I know you may be done with KLOV, so let me know if you want me to connect you with the guy who's doing it.

    #39 1 year ago

is that bottom piece of aluminum bezel trim stapled in of just left floating ?

    #40 1 year ago

    Thanks, i've got that covered

Got the interface board, switching power supply and the FPGA Terasic board programmed and ready to go in. Really looking forward to getting Alley Rally too.

Still tracking down some weird capacitors for the monitor chassis. But when that’s done it will be easy to wrap this project up.

That game has been on my wish list for a long time.Looking good!Played one on the santa cruz beach boardwalk years ago and got to see one again this last year in san francisco.Hope to own one someday for my arcade!

    #47 1 year ago

Yep I played this one back in the day too. It was controversial because of the gameplay. The violence was only a precursor of what was to come! A funny thing about this game - it’s one of the few old time classic video games that has no rom available for MAME. I have searched high and low and have not been able to find one that actually works. I would love to get it but I don’t think it exists.

Another side note - if you have never seen the classic Death Race 2000 movie with David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone it is absolutely hilarious. I just watched it recently, what a throwback movie, just as stupid and as fun as can be.

    #48 1 year ago

I always loved the art on this game. Nice work as always!

    Its ALIVE!

    Caps replace on Monitor Chassis.
Running the Terasic board off a switching power supply. It plays Death Race, Destruction Derby and soon it will play Alley Rally!

Buddy of mine is looking at the original power supply and when thats working i'll stick that in the cabinet with the original PCB. Just so that all the original equipment is there if i ever sell it down the road.
