A friend of mine has a repro Centaur playfield that he's offered to sell me. It's in great shape, but could use a good clear coating. What's a fair price for it?

We'll since nobody wants to say it I will. $1000 like it sits.

you are guys friends? You shouldnt pay him full price unless one of you guys does this hobby to make money. I mean if my friend was restoring a machine I sell it to him for what I paid +50 or 100. Thats what friends are for but now you owe him something in return

Yep, friends. He does it for a living but it's a hobby for me.

Why does it "need a good clearcoating" ?

If it is not usuable as is, then I would think ( read "hope") that this would detract significantly from its value. They came from CPR clearcoated and ready-to-go so for $1000 I would also be looking for ready-to-go and not "ready-to-spend-several-hundred-more-on-clearcoating".

The CPR playfields look just OK as delivered, but they are not gem quality.

They often need to be wet sanded and re-cleared with a harder clear coat. The harder clear can be brought up to a higher shine.

There are often holes, raised inserts, flecks of trash and fingerprints that need to be dealt with before you have a true masterpiece that you see in those $6k re-manufacturing jobs.
