I run full HD120p in my vpin over a extremely short VGA cable to avoid lags caused by HDMI/DVI processing in the TV - works 
My best guess is DP switched to some Linux with proper resolution driving a proper display. As they did on BoP2.0 with win7. Just the art that's displayed is low res and scaled up. I can't imagine that the display itself or the system is somehow limited to a low DMD style resolution.
